All right, time to get serious.

105% match.

Defense Grid. Try harder. It's been on like a billion steam sales. :3

Also, you build towers, not mechs. And they arent' customizable, nor is it grimdark.

First post of the page reserved for the LP, expect it with fondness. edit: oh, never mind.

Grimwulf it wasn't one of those, although Defense Grid looks close. The colour palette was darker if that helps at all, and it took place in a constrained maze-like city. Thanks for the recommendations anyway, that's more games to try. :argh:

Grimlorn -- Future Cop LAPD? (Badge in the lower left was what clued me in. I had completely forgotten about this).

Speaking of grimdark cop games for leino to try, G-police is gud.

Grimwulf - Ok... You got me. I never watched pokemans. I know what a pikachu looks like, but that's the limit of mu pokeknowledge.

(But pokemans is not grim-dark mech tower defense)

Here's one for you Grimwulf. It was on a PC Gamer UK Demo CD in 1997 or thereabouts

Didn't notice this edit. Hey, it's not even fair! We didn't have yer fancy western magazines in Russia! I'm 98% sure it wasn't ever released tho. Coz I had all of the "999999999 games in one CD" back in the days. Some schoolboys homework?

If we speak out-of-request, I can hit you too. Does "Big Thruster" tell you anything?

web.png

leino, I think it would be wise to make a table of contents in your first post. Err, some of your fans may or may not be... Sociable. Yes, that's the word.

Grimwulf -- Sex Vixens from Space (and Leisure Suit Larry) were my guilty pleasures as a kid before I found lingerie models in magazines

As for the game I'm challenging you with, it's from a major developer who made several very popular strategy games for the PC and Amiga. They released this one for free though. I'm willing to bet you've played at least 2 of their games.

Bullfrog!

Yes, confirmed. This is a teaser to a game that was never fully released, and the teaser was only on PC Gamer magazine. Which I couldn't get anywhere in my country.

You almost got me!

Bullfrog is the dev. The game was called Tube. It was on a demo CD in the same issue they revealed Dungeon Keeper :3

That was helluva fun. Thing is, OP's request remains a mystery.

Wait a goddamn sec.

Since you guys are talking about obscure old titles, does any of you happen to remember a tower defence-esque game in which the player designed mechs and sent them down lanes in a futuristic city setting? It was in 3D, with a pretty grimdark aesthetic.

Part 2: Meadow Vale

Ensign Raeder his notes.

Following the emergence of Corliss and his rebels' attack upon the Valley Kingdom, I was sent to investigate the status of our ledged fortresses in the barren Meadow Vale, as detailed below:
strat%202014-12-01%2016-32-19-17.png

strat%202014-12-01%2016-32-22-04.png

strat%202014-12-01%2016-32-26-36.png

strat%202014-12-01%2016-32-49-10.png

Some floatstone was discovered near the jumpgate at the mouth of the valley.
strat%202014-12-01%2016-40-03-01.png

It was used for the construction of twin catapults...
strat%202014-12-01%2016-40-40-66.png

... and a spike for close combat. At last!
strat%202014-12-01%2016-40-59-15.png

We immediately took fire from the ground upon entering the valley.
strat%202014-12-01%2016-41-37-77.png

founder%27s%20dock%201.bmp
Lord Corliss has declared Meadow Vale under his domain. RETREAT, or prepare to be shot out of the sky.

As per our mission, we attacked the captured fortifications. One of the silos was easily destroyed, but venturing further into the valley, we encountered too much firepower to press forward.
strat%202014-12-01%2016-44-38-25.png

strat%202014-12-01%2016-42-18-82.png

Taking note of the little passes around the canyon, I decided to take Tyro around the main path protected by the ledges, so as to approach the ledges from beyong their azimuth of fire.
strat%202014-12-01%2016-48-45-83.png

strat%202014-12-01%2016-49-33-22.png

Approaching through the hidden passes, I was able to approach the ledges from behind. I began with the ledge at the back of the valley, overseeing the other two.
strat%202014-12-01%2016-49-41-13.png

The remaining silo was also bombed from the safety of the canyon pass.
strat%202014-12-01%2016-55-42-61.png

The overseeing ledge destroyed, the remaining two could be attacked one by one from safe angles.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-05-14-81.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-06-57-02.png

With floatsone and iron salvaged from the ledges, I constructed additional thrusters and rebuilt the spike, which had been lost taking fire in the initial approach to the valley.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-08-07-53.png

Our objectives completed, we returned through the jumpgate.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-09-32-61.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-09-53-07.png

The next assignment was more challenging; in my first aerial combat, I accompanied Lieutenant Whitpeak in defence of Meadow Vale's factory towns.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-10-01-04.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-10-04-32.png

We had the resources to outfit Tyro with more weapons; we chose a rapidly firing scatter gun pointed to starboard. It is a lighter type of cannon, with an azimuth wide enough to fire at targets in front of the fortress while covering most of the starboard side.
strat%202014-12-05%2018-42-54-23.png

We commenced the mission, and were hailed by Lieutenant Whitpeak at Founder's Dock.

Whitpeak.bmp
Welcome Soren, it's a pleasure to fly with you. The granary is just east of here. Follow my lead.

strat%202014-12-01%2017-11-46-45.png

We set course for the factories, and quickly came upon the enemy.

firstmate.bmp
Delta fortress, sighted! Delta fortress, sighted! Beta fortress, sighted! Enemy in range!

Whitpeak.bmp
I'm tracking the bomber. Follow my lead or go to work on the fighters.

strat%202014-12-05%2018-44-44-55.png

The enemy force consisted of the bomber and two fighters escorting it, leaving us outnumbered. In the initial approach, the leading fighter sought to attack Tyro, but Whitpeak cut him off...
strat%202014-12-05%2018-44-47-71.png

... and rammed into him from the side. The fighter's momentum misdirected by the collision, he was separated from the main engagement as Whitpeak held the other two off.
strat%202014-12-05%2018-44-49-88.png

I followed the fighter as he wheeled around to return to the fight...
strat%202014-12-05%2018-44-56-62.png

... and, finally granted a chance to bring the spike into action, ran into him at full thrust.
strat%202014-12-05%2018-45-02-31.png

What remained of the fighter was quickly shot to pieces.
strat%202014-12-05%2018-45-04-43.png

strat%202014-12-05%2018-45-35-53.png

I turned around and found Whitpeak engaging the two remaining fortresses near the granaries.
strat%202014-12-05%2018-49-11-66.png

One of them had flanked Whitpeak, whose thrusters had been destroyed. Whitpeak, in turn, had shot the thrusters off the bomber, leaving the three in a stationary exchange of fire.
strat%202014-12-05%2018-49-25-60.png

I attempted to ram the fighter to disrupt his fire just as Whitpeak fired the decisive shot upon the crippled bomber.
strat%202014-12-05%2018-49-34-07.png

strat%202014-12-05%2018-50-06-78.png

Whitpeak.bmp
Okay, Soren, now that we have successfully destroyed the bomber, let's concentrate on the fighters.

Our combined firepower quickly diispatched the remaining fighter.
strat%202014-12-05%2018-50-12-10.png

strat%202014-12-05%2018-50-15-03.png

firstmate.bmp
Delta fortress, sighted! Enemy in range!

A fourth fighter joined the skirmish. I flew out to intercept as Whitpeak commenced repairs to the Ascendant.
strat%202014-12-05%2018-50-25-44.png

Tyro's cannon could not penetrate this adversary's energy shields, and I had to retreat, but neither was he shielded against fire from two fortresses.
strat%202014-12-05%2018-50-49-09.png

strat%202014-12-05%2018-51-17-19.png

This was the last of Corliss's forces encountered during the assignment.
strat%202014-10-23%2022-19-39-70.png

I was then tasked with escorting two floatstone mining vessels in the contested valley.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-28-55-83.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-29-02-58.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-29-19-54.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-29-40-94.png

For this mission, Tyro was outfitted with twin scatter guns and two more spikes to the front.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-31-33-15.png

As we headed into the valley, one of the mining vessels was experienced a malfunction that would bring its movement to a crawl for the length of the mission.

operator.bmp
Ensign Raeder, Miner II has reported their R2 unit has a bad motivator. They will not be able to maintain a maximum cruising speed.

The timing was inconvenient, but we were not commanded to return for repairs.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-32-33-29.png

firstmate.bmp
Beta fortress, sighted! Enemy in range!

strat%202014-12-01%2017-33-54-52.png

I flew out to meet the attacker, but instead of engaging, he attempted to break for the mining vessels.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-33-56-83.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-33-57-99.png

I cut him off while unloading into his exposed side...
strat%202014-12-01%2017-34-00-71.png

... and then brought the spikes into play as he turned to follow the miner. Ramming proved an effective tactic against this type of fortress
strat%202014-12-01%2017-34-05-22.png

A final volley brought the damaged fortress down.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-34-09-28.png

The other miner was already under attack. It began to occur the mining vessel's malfunction had not been coincidence.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-34-22-37.png

The fighters were single-minded in their pursuit of the mining vessels, leaving them open to our fire.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-34-45-61.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-34-58-08.png

The spikes have proven effective in attacking already damaged fortresses; once the surrounding floatstone has been chipped away, a hard hit at the center will crumble the whole thing.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-35-00-03.png

The first of the mining vessels arrived at the floatstone deposit.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-35-38-06.png

operator.bmp
We're monitoring the jumpgate activity. It appears the gate to Sawtooth Rim just opened. Be on the lookout for more enemies, Soren.

strat%202014-12-01%2017-38-46-85.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-38-54-25.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-39-11-19.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-39-19-06.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-39-21-06.png

The mining ships were robust. We dispatched two fighters by smashing them against the miners they were hounding.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-40-29-31.png

We finally saw the miners out of the jumpgate.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-41-57-14.png

operator.bmp
I've just received word from Queen's Valley. Both tankers have made the jump successfully.

Our task was not completed, however; radar indicated the presence of two more enemy fighters in the valley.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-47-18-49.png

This one was stronger than the others; his energy shield was fueled by enough generators to withstand our cannon indefinitely. Given much more firepower, one could hammer through the shields by overloading the energy production capacity of adversary's solar collectors. Tyro's cannon were not up for the job, however.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-47-21-15.png

The scatter guns are barely an annoyance, and to even attempt to bring our full armament to play would have left us a sitting duck against a much stronger fortress.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-47-46-88.png

We turned tail and, scuttling through the canyons of Meadow Vale, managed to lose the larger fortress for a moment.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-47-36-77.png

The maneuver afforded us a chance to face the smaller one in single combat. Knowing there wasn't much time, we ran him headlong into the mountain...
strat%202014-12-01%2017-50-16-79.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-50-27-74.png

... and continued the assault exchanging blow for blow, eager to bring him down before the fight was joined by the heavier fortress.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-50-46-44.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-50-49-23.png

He fell not a moment too soon, as the other fortress fell upon us again. We had no answer for his shields and superior firepower, and were forced to retreat once more.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-51-01-20.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-51-17-50.png

Still hounded by the heavier fortress, we came upon the jumpgate at the other end of the valley. Flying past it, an idea occurred.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-51-46-29.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-51-51-42.png

I flew around the gate, baiting the enemy to come through the gate to cut us off.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-51-54-63.png

Which he did. As he chased us through the inert jumpgate, I wheeled Tyro around...
strat%202014-12-01%2017-51-59-12.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-52-00-52.png

... and ran our adversary against the frame of the gate...
strat%202014-12-01%2017-52-03-95.png

... and, following through on the maneuver, into the mountain.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-52-09-99.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-52-14-61.png

Victory was ours.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-52-23-33.png

firstmate.bmp
Soren, they've initiated self-destruction routines!

A self-destructing fortress sends a destructive hail of floatstone and steel in every direction around it. It was too late to turn around, so we backed away as far as we could; fortunately his thrusters had been destroyed in the fight.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-52-57-38.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-52-59-51.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-53-46-80.png

After the successful escort assignment, we were granted the honour by the King himself of field testing the prototype Hydra Cannon. We found the weapon beyond reproach, and anticipate its deployment in the hands of the Aerial Navy.
strat%202014-12-01%2017-53-52-68.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-53-58-74.png

(A screen seems to be missing from the game here, or the textbox cut off.)

strat%202014-12-01%2017-54-09-28.png

strat%202014-12-01%2017-54-11-64.png

Our fortress is already outfitted with the prototype cannon. We added a section of wall to the front...
strat%202014-12-02%2002-27-31-69.png

... a spike and the familiar catapults...
strat%202014-12-02%2002-28-21-59.png

... and windmills and thrusters, leaving space for upgrades during the mission. A better model of rudder jet is now available, but we can only afford one.
strat%202014-12-02%2002-29-29-25.png

operator.bmp
Good luck taking the Sawtooth Jumpgate. We've been experiencing strong winds, so pilot with care. If you need resources, go to nav point A.

Nav point A marked a floatstone deposit.
strat%202014-12-02%2002-29-53-46.png

After gathering the floatstone, we improved the fortress with an additional windmill and another Rudder Jet II.
strat%202014-12-02%2002-32-11-23.png

The entrance to the canyon of the Sawtooth Rim gate was heavily fortified.
strat%202014-12-02%2002-32-53-54.png

firstmate.bmp
Beta fortress, sighted! Enemy in range!

A powerful gust of wind through the canyon forced us to enter without preparation.
strat%202014-12-02%2002-33-09-06.png

We luckily avoided being run by the wind into some mines and flak at the canyon's mouth.
strat%202014-12-02%2002-33-12-06.png

Using the wind to our advantage, we fly into the enemy fortress...
strat%202014-12-02%2002-33-20-35.png

strat%202014-12-02%2002-33-30-34.png

... however, the maneuver left us in the middle of some heavy flak.
strat%202014-12-02%2002-33-46-70.png

We barely made it out of the ledges' range with our thrusters intact.
strat%202014-12-02%2002-34-01-12.png

Another fortress emerged.
strat%202014-12-02%2002-34-11-89.png

rebelpilot2.bmp
I don't plan to lose to you, upstart. You'd better know how to use your weapons.

soren.bmp
You'll find out presently.

Using a familiar tactic, we used the frame of the gate as a weapon.
strat%202014-12-02%2002-34-25-97.png

strat%202014-12-02%2002-34-28-72.png

strat%202014-12-02%2002-34-31-52.png

strat%202014-12-02%2002-34-33-46.png

... this time, barely floating out of the range of the ledges with an intact command tower.
strat%202014-12-02%2002-34-53-54.png

We dragged Tyro into the nearby pass for repairs.
strat%202014-12-02%2002-35-07-28.png

Destroyed a hidden flak silo.
strat%202014-12-02%2002-35-20-68.png

We were caught by surprise by a fortress lurking in the canyon.
strat%202014-12-02%2002-35-53-79.png

His shields protected him from our initial attack.
strat%202014-12-02%2002-35-56-97.png

However, the new Hydra cannon is useful here; because of the high arc in which it fires, we can sneak well-aimed shots over their shield wall. The same is possible with catapults, sometimes, but at a shorter range and a narrower angle.
strat%202014-12-02%2002-37-06-52.png

Another silo is destroyed as a fortress emerges from the gate.
strat%202014-12-02%2003-00-50-34.png

ethrgw7h.bmp
Lord Corliss has sent a man to do a boy's job. Prepare yourself, child. Death is calling you.

soren.bmp
For he, too, needs a job to be done.

strat%202014-12-02%2003-04-14-82.png

Each time the jumpgate prepared to send another fortress through, we had a moment's window to attack the ledges.
strat%202014-12-02%2003-05-31-39.png

strat%202014-12-02%2003-05-39-57.png

One by one, we must have brought down a dozen fortresses in this damned valley.

In the end, the last of the ledges at the mouth of the canyon was finally dealt with.

Due to the success of our operations at Meadow Vale, I am among those put forward for promotion at a ceremony to be attended by the King himself...

Meadow Vale was an annoying series of missions with a lot of repetitive combat against weak fortresses. The last assignment, in particular, consisted of endlessly appearing trash enemies who weren't scripted to do anything but to play stationary pewpew for a bit and then to retreat within the reach of the flak silos.

Another flaw of the campaign is the AI, which seems to depend heavily on scene-specific scripts. Way too many of the fights collapse into inane stationary exchanges of fire because there's no need to do anything else. Still, things promise to get better as we go on and face more dangerous fortresses.

Question: Do any of you know how to edit the thread title? I'd like the title to show the most recent update, but can't figure out how to do it.

Got to give it a thought. But I'm warning ye, if it turns out to be some

modern popamole, I'll find ya.

Spurred on by this discussion, I finally discovered it! With cute Slavic English:

http://gamereviewgroup.com/game-review-roborumble/

I love the beautiful game. And interesting game I love. And I love unusual and original games that make for a new look at the game industry as a whole. And more pleasant, if a new and wonderful game comes from the pen of our Russian developers, or at least close by blood brothers Slavs. Polish game unfamiliar Russian players. Perhaps you can remember from the famous ElectroBody , so quietly passed a beautiful scroll Schutter Katharsis . But now take a hit for real game – RoboRumble from the Polish company Metropolis Software House .

is dedicated to fans of the myth
If you hit at the time " Myth " by Bungie Software , and you were in a frenzy this wonderful game – RoboRumble will surely find a place in your heart. With a little stretch of the imagination can it be called a tactical game without flaws. The plot of RR is not quite trivial, but as he RoboRumble . The government expects an attack on the Earth planet hostile aliens who possess super-weapon that can one shot kill an entire planet. The President of the UN decides to hold a tender among manufacturers of military robots – FirePower corporations and BrainPower respectively. Let your words and Fire Brain do not say anything – the mentality of the past is not particularly noticeable. In order to become an official supplier of robots to protect the planet, applicants must compete with each other in specially prepared areas. Each party must complete 15 challenging missions and win the right to rake in tons of money on arms. The judge is a pretty girl, pretty honest person, and besides, the leader and namesake BrainPower'ov. It will monitor the progress of the competition and give regular job. For successfully passed the mission you will be able to receive some amount of money that can be spent on the base – buy information about the enemy at the spy, upgrade base pribarahlitsya bonuses or a scientist. In the beginning you immediately plunge into the atmosphere RoboRumble , because all the menu items are the faces of the people and robots and even simple conversations such as "Do you want to quit the game?" Pronounced stutter cyborg, which is time to dump. Adding such a good chip impact on the game – now you are dealing with almost spiritualized people … within its database. By the way, one of the staff after each mission will tell you some funny details about the last fight, for example, "Your robots fired 1,208 times," or "Your most nedolgozhivuschy robot lasted only three seconds."

Your suggestions were so much better.

O man, I remember this. The demo was in an old issue of PC Gamer UK! I played it a bunch, but couldn't find it in any of the local computer stores and eventually forgot about it.

Do continue good sir! :salute:
You can still buy it: http://cdaccess.com/html/pc/stratos.htm

I bought it from there a couple of years ago but haven't managed to get it working consistently on newer PCs.

There are a couple of pirated versions of Stratosphere floating around too, if you are curious to give it a try (cheap as it is).

Forgive the delay, bros; I promise the LP isn't dead yet.
