Stratosphere, by Kodiak Interactive, is something like a fantasy naval sim with battles between techno-magically constructed flying Fortresses. In addition to cannon and the like, fortresses can be equipped with energy sources and special buildings like observatories, or with spikes and drills for close combat, all of which may be freely arranged. The combat plays in real time, the movement of the fortress assigned to the keyboard and its weapons to the mouse. The system is quite arcadey, but there is variety in units and in the way the different parts of a fortress can be attacked individually.

This will be blind; I fiddled around with a demo when I was very young, which is why I know of this quite obscure game, but never beyond the first couple of missions. I can't also can't promise regular updates -maybe I can muster it once a week- but let's see how it goes for now. I'll post the initial training missions later tonight. As the campaign goes on I'll try to maintain a library with the available units so you can make requests for the design of our fortress, if you'd like to.

cgtVTMr.png

The one flaw of the campaign has so far been that the missions are short and simplistic, and somewhat a waste of the terrific premise. Hopefully they will become more challenging towards the end. The fights are a barely controllable chaos that could also make for some glorious multi-player matches, say, two against two.

Please enjoy the LP.

Part I: Cadet Soren

soren.bmp

"In this logbook will be recorded the training performance of Cadet Soren Reydar, pictured. He is one of our Academy's most promising trainees. However, his youthful vanity has often caused him to court annihilation by posing for... "selfies"... in the heat of battle. We have nonetheless, God help us, let him undertake the live training exercises to prove his worth for the rank of Ensign and the command of his own Fortress.

reginald.png

"The cabin boy, Reginald, has been tasked to discreetly observe his performance.

A full map is displayed in the briefing screen before each assignment, but unless a fortress is equipped with an observatory, the map is obscured once a mission begins.

"Navigate the canyon?" This is beneath me.

operator.bmp
Let's begin. Remember Cadet, you need to build a Cannon I, Thrust Jet I, Rudder Jet I, and a Windmill. The canyon you need to navigate is east of the castle. Good luck!

The fortress presently consists of only a command tower.
strat%202014-11-30%2014-28-35-31.png

In Build Mode, the maximum size of the current fortress class is outlined, and available units listed on the right hand side. The numbers at the top of the screen indicate resources used for construction; stone, iron, and crystal.
strat%202014-11-30%2014-28-41-59.png

A windmill is constructed first. All other units require an energy source, and become disabled if the latter is lost. The green lines indicate the transfer of power from the windmill.
strat%202014-11-30%2014-28-47-26.png

Next, a thrust jet and a rudder jet...
strat%202014-11-30%2014-29-13-40.png

... and a cannon to the front.
strat%202014-11-30%2014-29-18-26.png

The arc indicates the range of our weapons. Given enough resources, we could build cannon to cover every direction around the fortress.
strat%202014-11-30%2014-30-21-29.png

The canyon pass.
strat%202014-11-30%2014-30-26-46.png

reginald.png
Winds are increasing! Soren, be caref--

strat%202014-10-23%2018-24-03-21.png

Otherwise engaged in taking pictures of his exploits, Soren reacted too late to the sudden gale. The fortress kissed the mountainside as it was flung out of the valley. Both thrusters were lost in the collision.
strat%202014-10-23%2018-24-06-80.png

operator.bmp
Objective 2 completed. Return to Tollenspaar Dock, Nav Point B.

soren.bmp
Uh...

Stranded out of sight of Tollenspaar, Soren sneakily scrapped the cannon for the resources needed to rebuild his engines.
strat%202014-10-23%2018-24-32-92.png

strat%202014-10-23%2018-24-44-06.png

The damaged fortress limped back to Tollenspaar.

strat%202014-10-23%2018-26-52-61.png

strat%202014-10-23%2018-27-09-93.png

The performance of Cadet Soren was... as expected. He will continue to the next exercise, pending repairs to Tyro.

strat%202014-11-30%2014-32-20-32.png

(Corliss was a heroic admiral who decades ago took his fleet on a mission beyond an unexlored jumpgate, and vanished. I don't think this is explained until later; perhaps the manual would have sketched out the characters and lore, but I don't have it.)

strat%202014-11-30%2014-32-39-51.png

strat%202014-11-30%2014-32-55-17.png

soren.bmp
Easy!

reginald.png
Soren, it's not good. I heard they'll fail you for sure if you try to pull something like last time.

The first waypoint marks some magical floatstone to be collected by Soren.
strat%202014-11-30%2014-33-55-76.png

firstmate.bmp
Beta fortress, sighted! It's Augusta, and the targets we are to destroy are there as well.
strat%202014-11-30%2014-34-08-94.png

Augusta1.bmp
Stay on course, Cadet. We're just observing your training maneuvers. Good Luck, and watch out for that arc projector.

The floatstone gathered, we build another cannon and attack the factory. There is an alternate firing mode for attacking ground targets.
strat%202014-11-30%2014-34-47-03.png

strat%202014-11-30%2014-35-29-77.png

Then we destroy the fortified ledge.
strat%202014-11-30%2014-36-00-12.png

Augusta1.bmp
Nicely done. In a real bombing scenario, you'll want more firepower than little Tyro packs.

operator.bmp
Objective 1 and 2 completed. Return to Tollenspaar dock.

strat%202014-11-30%2014-37-08-50.png

reginald.png
Augusta is pretty impressive, isn't she? Maybe we'll have a fortress like that one day, too.

Follow your navigation point to get to the drone. Good luck. Be on the lookout for the fortress Mantis. She's about to come through the jumpgate on her way to the castle.

strat%202014-11-30%2020-47-44-09.png

firstmate.bmp
Beta fortress, sighted! Enemy in range! And there's the Mantis through the gate.
strat%202014-11-30%2020-50-10-26.png

mantis.bmp
Greetings Cadet, I've heard some good things about your flying. Here's a tip to beat the drone. Get in behind him, and destroy his thrusters. He'll stop dead in the air.

soren.bmp
Very well! After him, fire at the thrusters!
strat%202014-11-30%2020-50-16-00.png

firstmate.bmp
We're taking return fire.
strat%202014-11-30%2020-50-21-97.png

firstmate.bmp
One enemy thruster down, Soren!
strat%202014-11-30%2020-50-33-11.png

firstmate.bmp
And another.
strat%202014-11-30%2020-50-48-64.png

soren.bmp
The drone is crippled. Fire!
strat%202014-11-30%2020-51-27-21.png

Drone destroyed! Return to dock.

That went a lot better, didn't it?
"... It is hereby considered that Soren Reydar has successfully completed his training as a Cadet of the Academy, and is recommended for junior officer.
Given under my hand and the seal of the Academy, &c &c.
First Lieutenant Augusta"

Meanwhile:

No, the cutscenes are not very good. I also have no idea how rank is supposed to work in this setting.

The next update will detail our first command against hostile forces!

O man, I remember this. The demo was in an old issue of PC Gamer UK! I played it a bunch, but couldn't find it in any of the local computer stores and eventually forgot about it.

Do continue good sir! :salute:

I remember playing the demo back when it was new and enjoying it (although I think I was limited to SW renderer and it was really choppy on my machine).

Also, why the fuck are people codices discussing FF8 all of the sudden?

Not good because FF8 doesnt have aerial battle.

It has retarded gunblades; emo protagonist; and an evil sorceress, posessing another sorceress, attempting to ressurect yet another sorceress. What else do you want?

Hareem. I want Squall fucking both Quistis and Rinoa. Selphie is a pass. I want more nekkid GFs, as Siren and Shiva are not enough
...
..
.
Just kidding, if barely. I want more game utilize its system of 100% customizable defense and offense. I want more emo moments with Squall and his sis, as I have weakness toward oneesans. I want some combat minigames during the few occassion call for it, the same as FF7's minigames, though please spare me the breeding/racing chocobos. Probabbly more sidequests on the world, as I want to travel the world on a flying highschool and rescue townies.

You can say I have fond memory of FF8. Fuck FF7's blocky arts and their killing off one character I've invested half the game into.

Looks awesome. I hope it's not another Missionforce Cyberstorm, interesting mechanics with terrible, simplicistic missions. Thanks leino for the discovery.

Bumping thread. Waiting for updates. Trying to recall other games with flying battle fortresses. Eador, maybe? Nah, it had flying continents.

Project Nomads. Mediocre. Nice art, nice ideas, barely adequate gameplay. Third person. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Nomads

NetStorm does count? We have a LP here. http://www.rpgcodex.net/forums/index.php?threads/lets-play-netstorm.35440/

NetStorm was addicting. Those glorious visuals and slightly tower defence-ish gameplay.

Although, I would say that FTL has more in common with Stratosphere than with NetStorm.

If we're going for modular anything, then there exists this simplistic but inspiring (in terms of mechanical ideas) flash game Captain Forever.

Nice one. Come to think of it, "lift-off" command in Starcraft 2 lets you to fly yer bases&buildings anywhere you want. Not to stratosphere, but still.
Flying space fortresses in Space Rangers 1&2 could put up a fight too. Although, you couldn't control them directly. Only build and empower.

This is ... interesting. also, really obscure.

Thank you for reading, all. To be honest, I played ahead a little bit before deciding to make an LP and the campaign seemed to get a touch better around mission twelve or so, where I stopped.

At least there is some plot to follow, and the multi-player skirmishes could be swell regardless of how the campaign turns out. A mission editor for this game would've had so much potential.

I really miss those CDs with a hundred weird demos each, from all sorts of different genres. There was even Exile 3 on one of them, and so many lost games of which I've forgotten the names.

leino, you'd better update soon. Or this thread is going to be hijacked.

Please don't expect prompt updates. Maybe I'll do one tomorrow, but I totally don't mind the discussion of emo JRPGs in the meantime.

Since you guys are talking about obscure old titles, does any of you happen to remember a tower defence-esque game in which the player designed mechs and sent them down lanes in a futuristic city setting? It was in 3D, with a pretty grimdark aesthetic.

My favorite "guess the game by next-to-none-descpription" part!
