As far as the "Captain likes X but I the real life player don't", I think the game has some advertising issues as to whether it wants to be a "normal" harem story where the main character is his own person with his own thoughts or if it's meant to be Dating Sim where you can choose the girl to romance and the main character is supposed to be a "blank slate" self-insert placeholder.

Makes no sense to give you all these choices to compliment a certain girl or whatever if it's supposed to be the former.
