Congrats! It's a hell of a lot tougher challenge than it says. Is this the first challenge finished? Sharpshooter?

6 hours huh? You must've lined up every shot 3 times before pulling the trigger.

It's the first time I finished the game, period. Seems sharpshooter made everything easier for me, as I only had to focus on pistols, and being able to squeeze an alarming number of shots off in no time is really powerful.
Plus, I cheated a bit and looked online for what kind of pistols that could be assembled, and had a storm pistol and energy pistol to switch in between. I managed not to find any unique pistols, so I guess I had good luck getting the proper mods for those assembled babies.

And those 6 hours were partly due to me having to leave the keyboard from time to time to tend to my family, so there was a lot of idling.
    Still, I'm quite pleased. :smug:

Dude, you're killing the suspense! Also, what was the deal with the energy shielded vest? It's supposed to have +50 resists, but yours has 12... does it degrade with durability? Also, turns out that inventory puzzles are a lot less embarrassing when you can skip screenshots and don't have to figure out what to do and try talking about it.

Yep, resistances degrade with durability just like the flat armor values. That armor would have actually been pretty godlike in conjunction with malicious blades. Over 50% resistance to everything... and I think you can still mod that thing too.

Just a way of speaking. :obviously: I know nothing of the future, the whole thing is live plus 5 minutes.

Yeah, I thought since it had 12 it would only increase to 25 with full armor value. Furthermore, I thought that since its description said it was very fragile that it would be one of those armors that couldn't be repaired.

update 18: Deimos lvl 5, a story of our run

    mini-poll: again edition
the next level is going to be a watershed moment inventory wise. We will open up at least 1 inventory slot, but also receive certain special items. Which to favor?
Choice A. Blood skull,, to be used in the mortuary most likely.
Choice B. Fire skull, to be used in the mortuary most likely.
Choice C. Hatred skull, to be used in the mortuary most likely.
Choice D. BFG9000 #2, to be used as a way to hide my skills in the mortuary for example or against bosses.

bonus choice: should we open up our inventory dramatically or not? There's a lot that could be dropped for extra ammo and extra items.

Why do you have to use spoiler for sshots? Also, is this a shell for DOOM RL, or are the new versions graphical, as I seem to remember a DOOM RL years ago that just had the basic ascii graphics.

EDIT: ah ok, it does make the thread cleaner.

A tiles version for Doom RL was just recently released. So you can play the game in either ASCII or tiles. It suits some types of roguelikes IMO. Others are quite fine without tiles.

Having two BFGs is so nice. I did my second win yesterday, lugged around 2 ordinary BFGs and one nuclear one. I managed to kill the mastermind without taking damage at all. :smug:

Choice D! Oh, and all other skulls you can fit in inventory.

Does the BFG gib corpses? If so, that's my vote. Otherwise, uh, Hatred Skull?

Hatred Skull. Berserk is invaluable for a melee build like yours.

Also, you should always pick up BFGs. They store more ammo than energy cell batches.

Honestly though, I'd recommend all of that shit for the mortuary, it's hard as fuck. Though potentially worthwhile if you do the UC first (which is totally viable with your character)...

I started playing because of this thread. So far, I used like 7 characters, and couldn't get far past the Cyberdemon. I just don't know what builds to use, and what are some viable strategies for this game.

Occasionally Fatal's LP shows how you can dodge the Cyberdemon's rockets. :p So that's one build. I never did it. My build is probably going to be to twin BFG him while using phase devices if he's ever too close? Phase devices are very useful against bosses.

I do have to say Azira you're not the only one that has enjoyed the pleasures of 2 BFGS + 1 nuclear BFG! I does gib corpes, maybe we will indeed develop a safe-ish strategy for the mortuary.

I wasn't going to mention this but... you should really just get a knife and melee him to death. With 75% melee resistance you'll tear him apart without having to use a medpack. Even better if you wear some armour with melee resists. Your aversion to melee with stronger enemies thus far has been rather bizarre.

I don't have Malicious Blades yet and won't have it in time for the Cyberdemon. Unfortunately the leveling is very slow, I shouldn't have taken Son of the Bitch.

    Help please!

I generally go Marine Shotgunner build but the Arena master has wiped the floor with me, whats the standard way of dealing with him?

A reliable way to take down the master on normal difficulty (the second lowest) is to first having cleared the right part of the screen, then take down all 4 cacodemons and maybe a few former humans on the left side, then take one berserk pack and the chainsaw, then rush into melee with the master.
Doing this, I've amassed a perfect kill-streak for the last 10+ games against him.

I still die stupidly by not playing carefully enough, stepping into doorways that are near a barrel, being surprised by an imp that shoots my techie, blowing up a lava barrel and ending his life instantly is a classic.. :decline:

    [EDIT]
Oh, and the above strategy works even if you have picked no melee enhancing skills at all. At least it does for me. :M

I think the Arena master is pretty resistant to bullets and shotguns, berserk chainsaw is definitely the way to go.

Interesting situations can arise when you try the Deimos start on nightmare.

It's not THAT bad. Turn on running, dodge off to the right until they blow some of themselves up, run up through the door. The rest of the level should be more empty than usual with a pack like that sitting there.

update 19: Deimos lvl 5, saying goodbye is hard

    poll: polls never change edition
I'm been holding this back for a while but we are at a crisis. We are leveling too slow. We are going to get Malicious Blades (better melee, +75% melee resistance, +50% fire) at level 10 and Whizkid 2 for the indestructible fireproof armor at level 11 (+50% fire). But we could instead take indestructible fireproof armor at level 9 (next update probably) and Malicious Blades at level 11. If we do that we'll earn 2 bonus inventory slots, though admittedly lose out on using the onyx pack on any future more awesome armors.

It's a very tough choice, which shall it be codex?
Option A) Malicious Blades at level 10, Whizkid level 11
Option B) Whizkid at level 9, Malicious Blades level 11

Nice writeup, you look pretty well setup. DR brings up a valid point about the melee armor though...

I don't intent to take the cyberdemon in melee, his rockets are homing and he will likely surprise us. And does the spider mastermind have a melee attack? By then we'll have better armors and Malicious Blades against her. Hopefully we'll have Malicious Blades for the UC too, if it's at level 11, I'm not sure.
