Have you ever played Doom but thought "why isn't this game turn based?". I mean being able to play a historic adrenaline pumping first person shooter is nice, but what if it was 3rd person, top down and with inferior technology? I had the same thought and luckily for all of us Doom RL is here to answer our demands. Doom RL is a roguelike that manages to stay very close to the original Doom while incorporating all the roguelikes features we know and love (even if you're never played a roguelike you'll love it). Its genius is the fusion between the Doom and the RL. It even got a graphical update recently for the casuals out there like me. And there's no need for a kickstarter here, because the game is free.

(why don't you grab the game here and we can play together)

The title screen. A good bro suggested I start this LP after he was incapable of finishing the game. Don't worry, I've got you.

Here is my player card. Pro. I'm kind of good at this game.

I've never cheated or anything. I've never checked the wiki except once or twice to better understand how some stats work. Some things I may not know, others I do. The fun with every roguelike is figuring everything out. Doom RL has 5 levels of badges, endless challenges and serious difficulty levels. This is a game that keeps on giving.

I'll start a new game. Every update with be for 1 level. Since there are around 30 levels, there will be 30 updates. That is unless I die.

When I die, the LP is over. Only 1 chance, whatever the RNG throws at me. The game will be on the 2nd difficulty level. It opens up a lot of things that are barred in the first difficulty and it's reasonably challenging. I am so confident that I will succeed that I want to use the LP to showcase some type of safe build that everyone can try. This build will reduce the RNG you have to deal with hopefully, so follow along and maybe you'll learn a thing or two.

But you have an opportunity to screw me, as always is the case on the Codex. YOU get to choose my class. There are three classes to choose from. Classes mostly differ in what advanced traits they get to have. So a different class means a completely different build.

The BRO, I mean the Marine. Marines have 60 HP instead of 50 and they receive 50% duration bonus from power ups.

The Scout. The scout does everything 10% faster and can see all stair tiles right away. I recommend you vote for this one.

The Technician. He can use items without a time delay, gets more map information from computers, can modify unique weapons and starts with a weapon mod in his inventory.

Vote away! Sometimes next week the poll will be closed and Phobos will await...

Scout is a pretty obvious option. Seeing all square tiles but losing HP and powerups is a very comfortable tradeoff.

Haven't had much luck with the Technician myself, so that's who I voted for. :smug:

It a pretty good thing the votes turned out Technician, the previous LP of Doom RL did a very good job of showing of Marine and Scout.

For future updates can I request a screenshot of your inventory at the end?

Sure, that's a good idea. I was going to post my inv at the end because I am already having inventory problems but I thought it wouldn't be too interesting.

Lucky break with the arena, but still, good job taking no damage. Seems like I tend to get at least one spawn with 2 or 3 monsters right next to me. Lately I've been trying to do a scout / marksman challenge, so pistols only. I've gotten through the first episode OK, but after that I tend to have trouble. Also, using pistols only, the skulls become a serious problem, since they have bullet resistance. Same story with revenants.

Oh right, here is the most OP build in the whole game I've found and best of all it's with the technician. I even won my angel of marksmanship challenge with it. Pick technician and then go for Sharpshooter. Sharpshooter does maximum damage with a 1 handed pistol. In the armony, I found a Beretta (not sure if it was random or you always find it in the marksmanship challenge) and it was GG. Berreta can burst for 6 bullets each doing 1d7 (i think). With sharpshooter and when you add 3 levels of son of a gun that's 10x6 = 60 damage every single shot. I even killed the last boss without taking damage.

The build is hard at first but from your reply it seems you can brave the early levels. Doing some basic math, even a normal pistol does 11 dmg with Sharpshooter, that has to go through some armor. Without Beretta, well that's probably harder but you could go for crafted pistols. The technician is really a bit of a late build because he can craft some really awesome stuff but you have to discover it first (that is unless you want to cheat and look at the wiki).

I've never found the First Arena challenging, you might take damage now and again but nothing that might kill you unless you're reckless

I would drop the power cell, what are you going to use it for this early?

Ohhh... the 10mm ammo drop might bite you in the ass later on when you're going up against, things that don't need to be in your face to kill you. Barons etc.

I find that power cells are rare so it's better to stock up on them for when you get the BFG. I've never really thought of doing it differently? As for chainguns, there's usually enough ammo per level to replace 140 bullets, but it is risky. I went 1 chain ammo and 3 shotgun ammo when the safe thing to do is 2 and 2.

During the later levels, I pretty much just juggle between Energy weapons and the Chain-gun. Shotguns lose their steam later on when you got rocket firing baddies. Unless you have intuition.

Shotgun ammo is spent at a slower rate than 10mm, Shotguns kill using less ammo.

I was always horrible at technicians, so don't die too soon.

A good powerful chaingun might be in the cards for hell levels. The problem is that without intuition I need to expose myself to fire the rapid fire weapons. I'm not quite sure how I will do those levels without intuition.

The beretta sounds like a random, ive made it that far before several times on marksman but never seen it. I've actually taken a break since ive become incredibly bored with the early levels, and it's just become tedious when I know I'll either make it easily to the second episode or have an unlucky death/mistake.
