Let's get to work. We interrogate the boy who works at the Black Sheep Tavern.

The men were drunk or poisoned by some particular alcohol from a place called something like "Upside Down Keg". This refers to the "Upturned Keg" which is there in the city of Sloop, right next to where pawn shop with the Nighthawk medallion was found. We'll go there.

We also take the time to talk to the Duke of Romney.

Apparently, only a man called Arlie Steelsoul can mediate the still ongoing Guild War, and we might have to find the man.

Meanwhile, we stop at the Upturned Keg to see why or how the particular alcohol was ordered.

Mitchel Waylander ordered it? It's convenient enough to be true. Waylander told us much earlier that he lives in that very town of Sloop, so it's just a short walk to his house right now.

krondor_027a.jpg

The large band of Nighthawks are now dead.

It seems Waylander does business with a man at Silden. Waylander finds something that will fetch some nice money, and has it fed into the Pranker's Stone. The object then materializes with a certain friend at Silden, who sells it off, and shares the money with him.

He ended up tricking a regal looking man, who now turns out to be a Nighthawk, and had taken a spyglass off him.

Remember the fortune teller who told us that a disguised man is the one we seek, and that he is marked by a particular scent. If we ever run into a scented noble, he is the one we need to find.

Meanwhile, we find Arlie Steelsoul's house. The man is a recluse.

It seems Abuk may be Mitchel Waylander's secret business partner. Apparently, the items found off the said regal looking man include a silver spider, an object that is used for poisoning, and when Abuk tried to sell it off, a Nighthawk ensured to quickly buy it back off him.

We need to talk to Abuk.

It regards a financial arrangement made with a man in Cavall Keep. It is possibly of great concern to the regal looking Nighthawk.

Just before we set off to Cavall Keep, the manor of Owyn's uncle himself, we make some quick contacts with two people at Krondor to know what else is going on (ignore both of it, if you want to worry about the murder for now). First Katala.

Big outbreak of Quegian Fever, and in the meanwhile, Pug and Arutha are perturbed by some revelation, but as indicated by The Oracle Of Aal, they have been misled in the wrong direction by what Gorath unknowingly told them. We don't know what it is, yet.

Meanwhile, in the Thieves' Highway:

The Upright Man is dead, and the special items that the Crawler's men hoped to nick off him have already been given to trustworthy people. The Crawler's men still have trouble finding the Idol Of Lassur, and that might be because it is somewhere underneath the portcullis that leads to the undersewer area.

Again, ignore this, if you want to worry about the murder, but anyway, a brief acquainting with Abbot Graves and Baron Troville.

The deceit used by the moredhel seems to be based on attracting the attention of Arutha towards the matter of Murmurandus' banner being raised, and the army is also being diverted to Highcastle, even though we have a bit of an idea that they might not be attacking there at all.

Now, at Cavall Keep:
krondor_190a.jpg

First to speak with Isunatus.
krondor_191a.jpg

krondor_192a.jpg

Let's discuss matters with Count Corvalis. As we know earlier, he dislikes a man called Navon Du Sandou (also a brilliant chessmaster and very well off) who keeps nagging him about his family history and the tunnels underneath his old mansion. The tunnels underneath the mansion also have an account of a sword called the Guarda Revanche, and one wonders why it is kept there.

Some disturbing revelations here. The book about the Guarda Revanche belongs to Uggyne, but she gave it to Navon Du Sandou, and the said book also happens to be inside the Cavall Run tunnels, about which Navon is ever so curious.

The spyglass belonged to her dead brother Neville, and now is in the possession of a regal looking Nighthawk man with a scent. What is going on here?

Anyway, time to go to Kenting Rush, and meet Navon Du Sandou himself.

So this regal-looking scented man is telling us that Count Corvalis is connected to the Nighthawks and that he even has Nighthawks secretly following him and Uggyne at all times. He also claims that the Count had a dislike for his son Neville, and even accuses him of having him killed.

Anyway, just to check up Cavall Run again, even though we have explored it quite thoroughly, we go back to the waterfall.
krondor_285a.jpg

There was this one room with a locked door at the end that we could not open. We go there.
krondor_286a.jpg

There's a lone Nighthawk in the room.
krondor_287a.jpg

krondor_288a.jpg

krondor_289a.jpg

krondor_290a.jpg

The man killed himself?! And instead of letting himself get interrogated for information, he is now gone. He must be entrusted with some very precious information that only he and the Nighthawk leader know of.

Time to just check up with the Count again.

No more fun and games now. It's time for the truth to come out. It's already wierd enough that Navon insinuated murder and association with Nighthawks against the Count and supposedly has on himself the book that Uggyne right inside the tunnels infested with Nighthawks. We have had that little Guarda Revanche book with us since the beginning of the game, so let's take it up with him.

He has a note on him.
krondor_323a.jpg

Some secret moredhel group is camped down here right now. We need our work done quickly before the moredhel are onto us.

We take the key off the man and go back to Cavall Run into that strange locked room.

Oh shit, Narrative Capture (tm)!
By the way, according to the memory Gorath was having of his tribe being slaughtered down, wasn't it mentioned that Narab and Nago were brothers, both being leaders among a very reputed moredhel tribe? Nago, of course, being the most powerful moredhel magician, whom we killed at the barn near Krondor.

Oh and I totally missed out on that one barn south of Cavall Keep near the lone magic shop where you find a moredhel party, and a note by Narab himself. Doubt it's much relevant anyway, though. Or was it?

I also didn't show the bit with the reptilians in Dimwood with their weakening magicfield. I can't distinguish between that being an ordinary fetch quest, or a story-related clue.

Hahah you're reading too much into it. I was younger when i played BaK and it's hard to understand wtf is going on sometimes. I couldn't even put the investigation together, I remember taking the alternate solution of talking to the temple priest to find out who the leader of nighthawks are.

You starved your characters to near death to solve the quest?

But tell me one thing: As a young man, how did you beat Dimwood? I needed a walkthrough to do that damn thing, as lame as that is. Illusionary mountains, wtf?

Yeah starving lol. Oh mountains...my memory's a bit dim.(pardon the pun) But I think it's the spyglass usage that helped me found out. Or perhaps trial and error.

I remember doing that, now. Can't have been much fun for my characters !

I don't remember finding out Du Sandau was Neville. It actually explains a lot about this part of the game. Do we ever find out who's his real father or is it not important ?

The fight against him felt way too easy. 3 vs 1 is no challenge at all.

I never figured out how Narab managed to find Gorath and Owyn while they were pretty far from moredhel lands, ambush them and then bring them North so easily. Oh well, he's about to have a nasty surprise.

Yeah, there is an alternative solution that avoids combat.

Not that I need it, because I can either use my 110% stealth ability that my party has along with Dragon's Breath, or I can just go on and fight every one of those 200 combat encounters with my buffed up party.

Also, it took me three playthroughs to find the goblin naptha mines that are located in the most obscure part of the Northlands map.

Didn't starvation eventually (quickly) made you loose attributes? If fact didn't food become spoiled after some time, so it was really a pain to do the quest this way because if you weren't careful you'd loose all your stored food by spoilage.

This game was so great. No wonder i replayed it 5 times.

Money wasn't really an issue by mid game if you've been exploring a lot. Food was cheap to get and you hardly buy new gears, only training books and spells are actually the gold sinks in this game.

I forgot how crazy Northlands was.

Three steps and three fights the moment I walked away from Lillian.

Also, how is it that I have 90% and 100% defense respectively, and the enemies are still able to hit me? They really designed those fights with the best possible party in mind in the first place.

Right now, there is a little moredhel infighting between Narab's tribe and Delekhan's tribe. The place is thick with moredhel, and neither of them are friendly to us. Narab's tribe especially know to kill us on sight. This pretty much means there is an odd 200 enemies right in the vicinity of a very small area around the castle to kill off before we push out. Combat is not a problem at this point, however, because we worked on building the characters early. Liallan suggested invoking the wrath of Nalar, but that is not necessary.

So anyway, right down south after pushing through endless moredhel, we avoid the roads, move through the forest, and reach Armengar:

krondor_065-5.jpg
krondor_066-5.jpg

We decide to talk to the local moredhel, which is okay, since they neither care nor know who the hell we are.

Apparently, a dissident moredhel leader called Obhkar is held captive in naptha mines somewhere farther away. Indeed, there are naptha mines in Armengar itself, and we decide to take a look what they are like.
krondor_077-5.jpg

krondor_078-5.jpg

Anyway, naptha is supposed to have an intense oil smell.

Moving away from Armengar, we start coming across this very smell and hatch a plan.

krondor_109-5.jpg

In a particular part of the mines, we find these masks.
krondor_111-5.jpg

krondor_112-5.jpg

And after some brief exploration, we find Obkhar.

What a sad sad thing it is with Gorath. As we can see, for a particular deceit, Delekhan wanted him alive, and interestingly, the people he sends after Gorath as assassins and then the one who was posted as a guard outside his cell, were all his relatives. And for just that, Gorath is forced to kill them like his own enemy. Though, Delekhan doesn't just want Gorath alive because he is useful, but it seems Delekhan is a very very close friend of Gorath, and once deeply trusted him as his own right-hand man and highest general, before Gorath himself betrayed the moredhel for the eledhel. How ironic that Delekhan even thought that, considering that as a young man, he slew Gorath's kin when he was a small boy. But what is also interesting is that Delekhan is older than Gorath, but looks younger. You can then see that the strain of a harsh life (and possibly something more) has aged Gorath considerably, and left him a ruined man somewhat.

Anyway, the gas masks can be worn so that we can swim down the underground river and leave the place.

krondor_148-2.jpg
krondor_149-2.jpg
krondor_150-2.jpg

This is a familiar place for Gorath.

So anyway, we now know that the best way to leave is through Inclindel pass on the eastern side of the Northlands and we can also talk to Moreaulf, son of Delekhan, with Owyn disguised as moredhel. Moreaulf is too young to know who Gorath is, anyway.

Here is the town of Harlech, which is occupied heavily by moredhel forces.

Where's my update?

Wyrm, don't you dare quit this LP. I'm replaying BAK after ages because of it and I'm using it as a guide. You can quit the retarded general discussion but not bak.

I might have to fire it up too.

The one thing I was probably too stupid to figure out all my plathroughs is how to survive (in fairly good condition) the long trip through the elf area to the west. I seem to remember no food vendors so I'd have to stock up before going there, and try to avoid combat or I'd end up starving on the way back, which usually happened. Did I miss something really obvious, it kind of feels like it.

Great read in the thread, and kind of strange that seeing the actor's faces again brings joy in my pants. I've always assumed they were actors or design crew who were digitized for the avatars and cutscenes, is that right?

Goddamn what a good play through. Although it's got a completely different rules set, BaK reminds me more of playing tabletop dnd than any other video game. I can still remember the fucking music to the damn thing. Thanks Wyrmlord!

Uploading a small batch of 208 images right now of the hardest chapter in the game.

Hard because Mr. Miyagi here is a worthless party member, with no skills in anything but a modest Spellcasting skill. :x Made me go, "The hell with this!" after every fight, and making me want to continue the game next day.
