    Episode 6: The Quest for the Water Orb

    We have to climb back up the dungeon after approaching that dead end, and on the way we drink a blessed potion of gain attributes.

    Again we get through the forest thanks to invisiblity/teleport. I'm not hardcore enough to risk the dwarven halls.
    Eventually we get back up to dwarftown, where there's a lot of muscular midgets waiting for us.

    Andhaira dashes to the altar, in hope of sacrificing the psychopathic shopkeeper.

    Demon down, but the bastard shopkeeper is too clever to stand on the altar, also, I don't think I can sacrifice him, so instead it's time to fucking run.

    The wand of fireballs that Thrundarr gave us isn't enough to deal with this bastard, so instead I use wit and inginuity

    Lead him to the ogre caves, run around a bit, go back up to dwarftown and leave him trapped there :smug:

    For some lucky reason, the rest of the dwarves aren't hostile. It looks like it was only Waldenbrook and his gang that took offense to killing an innocent dwarf. The bastard was probably a hated criminal and deserved it. We head back to talk to Thrundarr again

    He also gives us an artificat mace for us, "Big Punch". It's not really our kind of thing though.

    Our next challenge is getting that portal open, which means finally finish that quest in the graveyard, so back there we go, and on our way we eat some dead people:

    Oh yeah, shitty spell selection on the offensive front, that's why.
    We head back to dwarftown, and on our way we raid the shop and sacrifice some shit to our god, including the artifact mace. As it happens we were doomed because of our sins against the dwarves. We've now been forgiven though, so all is good.

    He then pulls the lever, opening the portal, and gives us a wand of fireballs, a wand of digging and 7 blessed potions of extra healing. Nice nice.

    It's time to get the first orb!!

    We find the level quickly

    Because it's a water level and all, drowning is a slight risk, and we aren't good at swimming. So I equip a ring of the fish and bless it, which lets us breath in water (obviously). Because we don't have a waterproof blanket, and we're carrying a lot of good shit, i leave most of our stuff at the staircase, and only take essentials.

    Although we have a pickaxe, we use a couple blasts of the wand of digging and we're in!

    Using a frost bridge we cross the moat into the main body of the temple. Temples consist of quite a lot of mobs and a boss, but the boss doesn't awake until you get near it or attack it.

    We bolt our way through the mobs, some of them, like water snakes are weak, but things like the elementals (the blue E) are pretty tough and take a few hits.

    Inside the main chamber we find the enemy. Fucking smug snake bastard.

    Because lightning bolts can bounce we hit him from our current position and awaken him.

    As you can see, we're taking pretty heavy damage, the bastard hits hard and poisons, so we tactically retreat, while still killing off a few of the other mobs.

    The snake tracks us down to the other side of the level, and it's time to finish him off.

    We loot his corpse, take his water orb and equip it. It boosts Wi by 10 and also can be used to fully heal you, at the cost of slight corruption.

    Because i'm a completionist, I head back and clear the temple out

    We find a wand of stunning, which could be useful for the tougher bosses ahead.

    We lack the gear to try to get the next orb, the fire orb yet, so we dive down a bit deeper.

    A golem guards a shitty guaranteed scythe artifact, maybe our god will like it though.

    We also get swarmed by an army of crooked bees.
    They're no match for our bolt spam though, and we loot their precious beewax from their hive.

    The next level has water in it, so uncontrolled teleport takes us to the staircase eventually

    What a bastard Thomas Biskup, the maker of this game was. This level sounds ominous eh? Well that's because there's a banshee in the middle that instakills you if not prepared. I spent a long time struggling to get this far unspoiled once upon a time, after dying here I said "fuck it"

    And there she is, bitch. Luckily she's not very tough and we kill her easily.

    Luckily you are guaranteed a bee hive leading up to the banshee, still, is a prime example of "roguelike design" M:

    The coolest thing you can do with a banshee is wish for one on the animated forest level, every round it kills all the ones around her, they drop pro loot and keep respawning. Ok when I said cool I kinda meant game-breaking :lol:

    Also, you don't die if you are a male character and wear a wedding ring, she's just desperate for a man clearly

    Well, theoretically you can, from listening to the minstrel and the fool enough, get hints about the banshee to deal with it on the first go, but well... The "red water" is another possible deathtrap on the 1st go, but it's much more obvious. Also knowing which enemies can cast death ray would be a bitch - though for that you can always have the resistance covered by something just to be sure.


    Best banshee memory was though, when I was trying to do a speedrun with a drakeling barbarian, and got to the banshee level. Then realized I had missed the beehive, probably took stairs before seeing/hearing it. To go back and ruin my turncount, or try to come up with something desperate? The latter obviously.
    1st, read a scroll of monster detection to locate the banshee and the stairs.
    Then use fire wands on myself, in order to get more speed (drakelings gain extra speed from heat).
    Then, teleport next to it and hope that the turn order favors me and I get a sequence of 2 turns, so that I can teleport -> tremendous blow on it for a 1-hit kill (tremendous blow is a barbarian special ability, does triple damage of a normal blow but takes 4x time to recover from, banshee certainly doesn't have enough HP to survive that).
    Success!, I teleport next to it and it doesn't get a turn there due to my excellent speed and luck.
    ...And then miss. And get yelled at.

    Funny times when that was played on the server, a dozen people watching it and talking with me on IRC.




    Also it seems like Andhaira was just not cowardly enough when facing the hivemind, he let his ragin get the best of him.

    I wouldn't mind the red water thing so much if not for the fact that the fucker uses confusion on you as well. It's also late enough in the game but water is rare enough that there's a very high chance that it's the exact spot you find out one of the annoying features of ice bridges.

    Nethack's green ooze probably takes the cake for most bullshit way to die however. With eels as a close second.

    The confusion attack is the cool part of it, I think - that combined with the environment makes it a more interesting fight than "just another skeletal king". It's only the first time that likely fucks you up without the responsibility being fully on you.

    And I think there are some moves that let you stay on spot while confused - possibly at least Cleaning ears? But if you know that you're likely spoiled about every other issue in the game too, anyway.

    I like the mechanic of how it works when you know it's coming, I just think it's really cheesy not giving the player any kind of hint that he'll be subject to confusion when it pretty much means instant death. If it had at least been some weird ass tentacled horror or mindcrafter (or whatever the psychics are called in ADOM, I forget) it wouldn't have felt nearly as cheap getting hit by a confusion attack. As it was it would make about as much sense as if the mummy lord started casting healing spells on himself or blasting you with acid breath.
