Nobody mentioned yet how horrible the screenshots look with this shitty Eagle/2XSal filter applied?

Codex, I am disappoint. :(

What's wrong with you people, is it how DOS games looked on your sweet 14'' CRTs back in the day? Well, not in my case...

Anything more than normal filtering is a filthy abomination...

Normal filtering is too smudgy at full screen for my playthrough. At first i had it at hq3x and now at hq2x for the LP. Since I'm using scummvm it's a necessary evil for taking screenshots. (And no I won't fire it up again in dosbox).

The second chapter of the extravagant Indiana Jones Adventures, is here! After an agonizing romp through the College archives and a showdown with Nazi spies, Indy wore his shirt and tie and went to New York City to search for Sophia Hapgood. He finally found her posing as "Madame Sophia" giving a psychic lectures in some theater. A look to the marquee reveals that Indy doesn't buy the act...

scummvm00204.png

Confrontations Of A Cerebral Nature.

I guess we better buy a ticket.

scummvm00206.png

Cashier.png
Show's sold out, sir.

Indy06.png
Now, look-

Cashier.png
No seats, no standing room, no exceptions.

Indy07.png
But-

Cashier.png
The doors are locked, sir. Come back next week.

FUUUUUU-
Unsympathetic, stone-cold cashier is the worst enemy in an adventure game. What shall we do now ? Let's have a look at that old issue of national archaeology, while we try to think of something...

scummvm00215.png

Indy06.png
...when I thought we might like each other.

Indy liked young and sexy assistant, no big news here. But this reminiscence doesn't help. A newspaper on the stand catches our attention.

scummvm00218.png

Cool, let's steal it. As you can see we are now able to use the famous Lucasarts verbal UI. Now we must find a way to get inside the theater. If we move further down and to the right, we reach a back alley.

scummvm00218a.png

And this is where multiple solutions come in play my friends. There are three different ways for us to achieve our goal here:

  • Xtreme Indy suckerpunching.
  • Sneaky Indiana crate-moving infiltration.
  • Biff Diplomacy.

I'm going to show all three. Let's start with Xtreme Indy.

We check the back door and it seems it's unlocked !

scummvm00225.png

Unfortunately things aren't that easy...

scummvm00230.png

Biff2.png
This ain't no ticket office.

Xtreme Indy doesn't have time for this shit.

scummvm00232.png

Indy07.png
Let me in, you Darwinian nightmare.

Biff2.png
Was that an insult ?

Extreme Indy doesn't back down from situations like these.

Indy07.png
What do you think ?

Biff2.png
I THINK I'm tired of fancy-dan college boys who use big words ! And I THINK you better apologize.

Xtreme Indy doesn't apologize to anyone.

Indy07.png
Why should I, you fat tub of lard ?

scummvm00241.png

Mr. Bouncer just reached his limits, it's clobberin' time!

scummvm00243.png

We're talking about serious Street Fighter stuff here ! You can punch and defend in three different positions with the NUM keys. If the fight is too difficult for you, you can throw a sucker-punch by hitting the 'insert' button, but you won't get any IQ points if you do this. (You'll see later what are these IQ points I'm talking about)

scummvm00264.png

Anyway, Biff isn't that hard to beat.

scummvm00266.png

scummvm00273.png

scummvm00275.png

scummvm00279.png

...The harder they bounce ? Uh, nevermind. Extreme Indy route... COMPLETED.

Now it's time to check out the sneaky route. It's faster and more straight-forward:

Actually we don't have to enter the Theater from the back door, there's another way in. If we move a bit to the right we'll see a bunch of crates and a fire escape ladder.

scummvm00281.png

If we push a couple of crates we can make our way to the ladder...

scummvm00285.png

...and get inside !

scummvm00290.png

But In reality we'll follow the Biff diplomacy route. It's the most fun to play since you get to pick a lot of hilarious dialog choices with Biff. Now where were we ?

scummvm00296.png

scummvm00297.png

Indy06.png
I'm here to enjoy Madame's outrageous orations.

Biff2.png
It's ain't that kind of show !

Biff has difficulty following Indy's elaborate speech. Let's continue in the same vein...

scummvm00299.png

Indy06.png
Oh? I hear she's practicing sophistry in public.

Biff2.png
That's a bald lie... and you better apologize for spreading it !

Indy06.png
I don't have anything to apologize for.

Biff2.png
That's where you're wrong, mister. Now shove off !

Gee, he looks pretty sore. Let's try this again with a bit more Biff-lomacy (tm).

scummvm00307.png

scummvm00308.png

Indy06.png
Wait. I'm sorry I offended you.

Biff2.png
Oh. In that case, whaddaya want ?

scummvm00313.png

Indy06.png
I'm here to watch Madame's egregious exhibition.

All you illiterate popamolers can learn a few new words with this game !

Biff2.png
Like I told you... she don't run that kind of show !

This time we'll be a bit more condescending.

Indy06.png
Of course not. Madame Sophia's a serious thinker.

Biff2.png
Watch it ! You're talking about my idol.

Indy06.png
No kidding, I think she's the greatest.

Biff2.png
Me too. There's SOMETHING about her...

scummvm00323.png

I couldn't help but pick this response.

Indy06.png
...Yeah, she's got a great cerebrum.

Biff2.png
Watch your mouth, bub !

Heh, let's fake some remorse.

Indy06.png
Okay, okay. I'm sorry.

Biff2.png
Apology Accepted. Now Shove off !

Not this again, Wait a minute !

scummvm00330.png

Biff2.png
Why won't you take no for an answer ?

Indy06.png
I really need to talk to your star.

Biff2.png
Another admirer, huh...?

This time we'll leave complicated words out of the dialog.

Indy06.png
...Yeah, she's very smart.

Biff2.png
Smart! I'll say ! You know what I really like ? It's the way she... she...

scummvm00342.png

I'm tempted to go for the first answer, but it's time to get on with this.

Biff2.png
THAT'S IT !!! All that smart stuff seems so easy when I'm listening to her ! Say, you're okay for a college boy.

scummvm00347.png

VICTORY !

Once we're inside, we find ourselves in the back stage. What's with the strange doll ? This show looks like a big scam... As for the stagehand guy, he fails his perception check :

scummvm00351.png

stagetech.png
About time they got rid of Biff... he was such a pushover.

You can say that again.

We should try to speak to Sophia, but we'll do that later. We'll wait for the next chapter, where we'll mess up her lecture on Atlantis, run into Kerner again and make a trip up north, very north. Stay tuned !

I didn't know there were multiple solutions in this game, I just pushed on. That's pretty cool. Do they affect later outcomes as well?

Especially in this puzzle, the solution you choose will determine what path will Sophia propose for you to take later on. (but you can still choose whichever you want). Other than that I don't think there are other consequences, apart from the fact that there are 3 distinct paths of course.

You can also bribe him with the newspaper.
Was really satisfied with this game, bought it when I was 12, and completed all three playthroughs without a hintbook. VERY satisfying.

Go for it man.

Nah, you need the newspaper to bribe te stagehand.

Definately go for wits. It's by far the most interesting of the 3 paths

Guess what ? We're finally inside the damn theater and all that stands between us and Sophia, is a hardheaded stagehand, a lecture full of vagueness and a couple of Atlantean Spirits.

Madame Sophia's Outrageous Orations

scummvm00354.png

stagetech.png
You're insulting a goddess, mister.

Indy06.png
That "goddess" USED to be a scientist.

stagetech.png
She can talk to ghosts, you know. Who needs science ?

Bah, this isn't taking us anywhere. Maybe we should just go and talk to Sophia ourselves...

scummvm00362.png

stagetech.png
You can't go out there. Take it easy and watch the show.

Darn. Let's see what this is all about.

scummvm00365.png

Sophia02.png
...As it might have appeared in it's heyday...

scummvm00369.png

scummvm00370.png

We're talking about cold-hard science here.

Sophia02.png
5000 years ago, while everyone else still wore animal skins, the mighty spirits of Atlantis dared to build a city where knowledge and power were united in true happiness.

scummvm00374.png

Sophia02.png
He placed Atlantis on a continent out in the deep ocean...

scummvm00376.png

scummvm00378.png

Uhuh. Let's take this break as an opportunity to check out our IQ points by pressing "I". IQ stands for "Indy Quotient" (heh) and it shows how well we've done in the game.

scummvm00380.png

To get a full score, it seems you need to finish the game with all 3 paths and and find all possible solutions to puzzles. The "Path" section will show you what path you're on, when you decide which one you'll choose.

Ok, let's get back to the lecture.

scummvm00385.png

Sophia02.png
We'll never know for sure. Was it the sea level, slowly creeping higher, or the earth itself, suddenly shifting ?

scummvm00389.png

The marker sure makes her look legit...

Sophia02.png
...On that fateful day when proud Atlantis sank beneath the waves... Or...

scummvm00394.png

Sophia02.png
On some questions the Great Spirit who guides my thoughts...

scummvm00398.png

The all seeing nur-ab-sal ? Give me a break !

scummvm00399.png

stagetech.png
The Woman never Stops !

REALLY ? Maybe this guy has gotten bored of hearing the same stuff again and again... Let's see if we can get him out of the way.

scummvm00406.png

stagetech.png
Me too, to tell you the truth.

Indy06.png
Isn't there something you'd rather be doing ?

stagetech.png
Like what ? Show business is my whole life.

Indy06.png
Don't you have any hobbies ?

stagetech.png
Sure, I read.

Indy06.png
What if I give you something to read ?

stagetech.png
I might take a look.

And what better reading material for the loo, than today's newspaper...

scummvm00421.png

scummvm00423.png

stagetech.png
I wonder if the Dodgers won ? Watch the lights while I find out, okay ?

Indy06.png
Sure thing.

And now we've got the backstage to ourselves, let's see if we can get this lecture to an early conclusion. I wonder what this machine does ?

scummvm00430.png

Ok, we pushed the left and right levers, the lights went green and some music started playing. I guess that's a good sign.

scummvm00435.png

All that's left is to push the button and the show will start...

scummvm00439.png

:smug:

scummvm00442.png

scummvm00445.png

scummvm00447.png

scummvm00448.png

scummvm00450.png

Indy06.png
Deceit !

scummvm00452.png

scummvm00453.png

...

scummvm00454.png

Sophia02.png
You've got some nerve !

scummvm00457.png

scummvm00458.png

scummvm00461.png

scummvm00462.png

Mission accompliced.

scummvm00465.png

Sophia02.png
I've got a few words to mince with you.

Indy06.png
I'd say it's about time.

scummvm00470.png

Indy07.png
Looks like Kerner got here first ! Stay put !

Indy goes out to check the premises.

scummvm00475.png

But he isn't thorough enough...

scummvm00477.png

scummvm00481.png

Klaus.png
I think we've found the treasure we seek.

That doesn't sound good.

scummvm00485.png

Indy06.png
What does a NAZI SPY want with old statues ?

Sophia00.png
Have you seen the newspaper ?

scummvm00493.png

Sophia00.png
"Chief scientist Dr. Hans Ubermann announces plan to harness new sources of energy for the Third Reich."

Indy06.png
So ? Practical results are years away.

Sophia00.png
Of course they are. That's why they're looking for the power of Atlantis.

Indy07.png
Be serious. I used to think you'd make a good scientist. Yet you stole things from MY expedition, artifacts such as archaeology has never seen !

Sophia02.png
Hmph !

scummvm00507.png

When things get tough, Sophia can use certain tricks to avert attention from the subject. One of them is to change clothes.

scummvm00509.png

Sophia02.png
Look for a small coppery BEAD, under those clippings in my desk.

scummvm00518.png

Hmm... Same as the one we found in the Statue ?

Sophia00.png
Kerner missed the grand prize...

Indy06.png
What ?

Sophia00.png
...my necklace.

scummvm00525.png

The necklace, Indy, not the boobs.

scummvm00527.png

Sophia00.png
...The mystery metal first mentioned by Plato. Now I'll place it in the medallion's mouth.

scummvm00531.png

WHOA !

scummvm00533.png

scummvm00541.png

scummvm00544.png

Sophia00.png
Did you see that ?

Indy06.png
Yeah. Creepy. Is your electric bill paid up ?

Sophia02.png
That was Nur-Ab-Sal. His spirit is close !

Yeah right. Uh... right ?

scummvm00554.png

Indy07.png
Suppose I gave this Orichalcum business ANY credence... which I don't... You may have just used the last bead !

Sophia02.png
Shhhh ! I'm getting something !

scummvm00562.png

Sophia02.png
He bids us find the... what... a book... yes... the LOST DIALOGUE OF PLATO !

Indy06.png
Another fine myth ! I think Plato just wanted to tell a tall tale.

Sophia00.png
What if the Nazis have ALREADY FOUND a copy... You ever think of that ?

Indy06.png
Hmm... You found this stuff in Iceland, right ?

Sophia00.png
Yes. Near our old dig site.

Indy06.png
I thought so. Who's working there these days ?

Sophia00.png
Bjorn Heimdall, I believe.

Indy06.png
Maybe we should pay him a visit... What do you say ?

Sophia00.png
I thought you'd never ask.

And off to Iceland, we go !

We only have a very incomplete version of the dialogue were Plato really describes Atlantis, so there was no need to invent a lost dialogue, but never mind.

I'd heard about the game quite a few times, but never had the chance to see what it was like. So far, it seems quite promising ! I wonder in what year it's supposed to be set. It's obviously after 1933, but has the war started in Europe already ?

Well Plato did briefly mention a mythical kingdom as you said, but the need for a lost dialogue is because we need to find out more information about Atlantis.

As for the year the story takes place, it's 1939, according to the comic that was based on the game. We're on the eve of WW2.

I understand. I meant that the quest could simply have been to find the missing part of the dialogue detailing Atlantis (Critias) rather than a made-up secret dialogue.
But as I said, it's hardly essential.

Thanks for the info. Indiana Jones really managed to have a lot of adventures in the six years between Hitler's rise to power and the beginning of the war !
