Emperor: Battle for Dune, the sequel to Dune 2/Dune 2000, the currently it is the last game made that was set in the Duniverse and the last RTS developed by Westwood.
You can thank RK47 for making me want to replay this by posting Dune 2k music in his MOO2 LP. Since there are choices to be
made this makes it good LP material, at least compared to other RTS, since the Hivemind will be able to vote on a variety of decisions.
The game rapes is rather liberal with the Dune canon not as liberal as beth was with Fallout canon at any rate.

FMV - The Story thus Far

Ignore the silly "sticky note" comments pasted on the video. Would post a version without it but I can't find one and
ripping+uploading the FMV would take way too long.

The Emperor is dead as is his House, the entire known universe is on the verge of chaos and civil war.
Only 3 noble houses of the Landsraad are powerful enough to seize the Golden Lion throne of the Imperium.

The Atreides of Caladan, the Harkonnen of Giedi Prime and the Ordos of Draconis IV.

FMV - The War of Assasins

A war of assassins is called, the 3 houses will battle for control of the planet Arrakis the only source of the spice melange.
They will abide by the Great Convention, warfare will be limited to the planet Arrakis.

Arrakis-Dune-Desert-Planet-Small.jpg

The spice is vital to space travel. Without it interstellar civilization will crumble. The spice must flow.

He who controls the spice controls the universe, he who controls Arrakis controls the spice.

The Hivemind must decide which of the following 3 factions will try to control Arrakis or Dune as the ragheads that inhabit it call it.

House Atreides

FMV - Atreides Introduction

House_Atreides_Insignia.jpg

The Noble Atreides

Lead by Lieutenant Worf Marcus the Supermutant Duke Achillus. Noble in both name and action.

Their homeworld is the waterworld of Caladan.

House special ability "Superior Training" - Infantry units reaching level 3 veternacy may be sent back to the barracks to upgrade all newly trained infantry of its type with +1 veterancy level.

Army intel: Great infantry, can build field repair vehicles, uses walkers.

Their orchestral-esque soundtrack was composed by Frank Klepacki.

House Harkonnen

FMV - Harkonnen Introduction

House_Harkonnen_Insignia.jpg

The Evil Harkonnen

Lead by Baron Rakan who spawned two sons, The Feyd Rautha Gunseng and Glossu "The Beast" Rabban evil readheaded CLEVE Copec. They are hedonists that revel in debauchery. Morality is an alien concept for the Harkonnen.

They hail from the smog-filled polluted industrial wasteland of Giedi Prime.

House special ability "Berserk" - Units don't suffer from movement speed penalties caused by damage.

Army intel: Heavily armored slow vehicles, strong air-power, they love flamethrowers and other "inhumane" weapons :incline:.

Their soundtrack is industrial metal composed by David Arkenstone.

House Ordos

FMV - Ordos Introduction

Ordos.jpg

The Insidious Ordos

Lead by a "hivemind" known as the Executrix. Four beings linked into one known as the speaker. Cold, efficient, power-hungry and greedy they use technology in ways to horrible to speak of.

The frozen rock known as Sigma Draconis IV is their domain.

House special ability "Regeneration" - all Ordos units regain health to full over time.

Army intel: fast units, some units use shields (which combined with their health regeneration is true popamole :decline:), chemical weapons and kamikaze units.

Their soundtrack is electronica composed by Jarrid Mendelson.

Also during the conquest of Arrakis the House chosen by the hivemind may ally itself with a number of subfactions. These alliances may be made by fulfilling secondary objectives in regions where the subfaction is present.
If the hivemind's House is already allied with a faction present in the area and does not help them this will break the alliance. Some will be in conflict with the other so choices will be have to be made.
Allying with some subfactions is can be easier or harder depending on the House.

For future reference the 4 subfactions available in the campaign are:

Ix

Ixian_Insignia.jpg

Ix is one of the leading world when it comes to scientific research in the Imperium. Some of it is rumored to being close to breaking if not outright breaking the ban on "thinking machines" instituted after the Butlerian Jihad for obvious reasons.
Their machines are a highly sought commodity in the Imperium. Also they hate the other major research trading world known as Bene Tleilax.

Units: The stealth kamikaze bomb Infiltrator and the Projector Tank which creates holo-projections of allied units.

The Fremen

Fremen_Insignia.jpg

Desert dwelling "natives" of Arrakis. Skilled at desert camouflage and hand to hand combat, their hobbies include participating in weird rituals, orgies and sandworm riding.

Units: Stealth snipers and stealth sonic blaster infantry.

The Sardaukar

Sardaukar_Insignia-Dune.jpg

Trained at the inhospitable "hell world" of Salusa Secundus these elite troops were fanatically loyal to the Emperors of House Corrino. With House Corrino and its last Emperor dead they look for new allies.

Units: Minigun heavy infantry and officers armed with lasguns.

Bene Tleilax

Bene_Tielax_Insignia.jpg

The Tleilaxu specialize in bio-engineering. They grow clones, shape-shifters and other "abominations" in their axlotl tanks. Bitter rivals of Ix.

Units: Zombie infantry and living tanks called leeches capable of infecting and growing more of them out of enemy vehicles.

Also the guild is a subfaction that is playable in multiplayer. However due to plot reasons they are apolitical and thus you cannot ally with them in the campaign, that's one of the elements of the Duniverse canon that Westwood decided not to rape :smug:

Now the Hivemind must choose! Which House will receive it's guidance in the War of Assasins on Arrakis? Vote in the Poll, after a day if there are enough votes I'll start this.

Also starting from the next update the hivemind will be able to vote on which regions to conquer and subfactions to ally with.

Codexian LP = Evil Harkonnen. It should be obvious :rpgcodex:

Also, you get one extra choice with the Harkonnen than you do with the others.

Ordos are pretty cool, but yeah, Harkonnen has much better potential for a Codex LP. So I'm going with the evil fuckers. And lets try and make friends with the Bene Tleilax. Tleilaxu are fucking awesome (I don't know if their good in this game, but their great in the novels, particularly Heretics and Chapterhouse).

House Atreides represents honor and other virtues that most of the torrenting Codex wouldn't give a shit about. Not removing from inventory would constitute as disgrace to the Atreides.

That leaves us with two. The brutality of the Harkonnen or the inhuman Ordos.
I tried to get into this game but couldn't get past the graphics. I really cannot distinguish between the unit graphics. It's a really rough engine of the Command & Conquer General series and man,...it is a terrible representation of sci-fi units that were quite 'grounded' in previous incarnations.

I'd vote Ordos..but the mentat turns me off. Go for Harkonnen.

These Tleilax sound awesome. For the House, the Ordos sound interesting, but being this a Codexian LP we have to play as Harkonen, Cleve demands it.

Re: Let's Battle for Dune! #1 Noble House Vote

A game with one three of the most awesome soundtracks ever

Voted Harkonnen. This deleted cutscene proves they are well ahead of the Ordos where evil is concerned :incline: Plus, the Ordos are all about acquiring jewgold. They're probably churning out Dragon Effect 97659265423 or something :decline:

If this landslide continues then the evil fatass Baron Rakan of Giedi Prime will receive the guidance of the hivemind. I'll wait a few more hours and if it's still a landslide the Hivemind will get what it wants.

One more for Ordos, jewgold aside, I think they fit better with the codex than the Harkonnen. :M

Played through this game again 2 years ago with all three factions. Amusing game, not too challenging though. :smug:

Update 2: House Harkonnen

House_Harkonnen_Insignia.jpg

game2011-08-2721-18-13-37.jpg

game2011-08-2721-18-22-06.jpg

The Hivemind has been spoken! Evil must prevail.

FMV - The vultures gather

Harkonnen are big on family values it seems. They also know a thing or two about motivating employees.
The job seems simple though, go to a barren ball of dust kill everybody that isn't a Harkonnen and spend
the rest of your life living in luxury, snorting melange and fucking concubines provided by the new Emperor of the
known universe.

How hard can it be?

Music: House Harkonnen

game2011-08-2713-28-51-78.jpg

Kill everything and stick the House flag on the ruins, even a consoletard would be able to understand what needs to be done to accomplish this mission.
This mission is as easy as it is boring, it is essentially a tutorial.

game2011-08-2713-29-05-95.jpg

harkonnenmentat.jpg
: Succeed in your task and the reward will be immense, fail and you will suffer.

A small outpost has already been established here by the Harkonnen. It will be used to crush the enemies of the House.

game2011-08-2713-29-14-84.jpg

harkonnenmentat.jpg
: The Atreides in their arrogance erected not only a base in this territory but also a palace. Such audacity will not go unpunished. Burn it to the ground!

game2011-08-2713-29-47-76.jpg

The arrogant Atreides attack the base. They do not survive.

game2011-08-2713-30-29-89.jpg

Another incoming assault force is spotted.

game2011-08-2713-30-57-03.jpg

game2011-08-2713-31-29-01.jpg

game2011-08-2713-31-32-90.jpg

Now what is this?

game2011-08-2713-31-36-25.jpg

game2011-08-2713-31-39-50.jpg

It is a rather bad idea to cross the sand with large armored divisions. It tends to attract the attention of sandworms. :smug:

game2011-08-2713-32-05-59.jpg

More hostiles incoming.

game2011-08-2713-32-35-34.jpg

The spice must flow, as long as there are refineries, harvesters and carry-alls House Harkonnen has the funds needed for weapons, torture devices and slaves.

game2011-08-2713-33-02-29.jpg

game2011-08-2713-33-05-95.jpg

A giant buzz-saw with machine guns is what the Harkonnen call a light scout vehicle. These combined with missile troopers form the assault force which will
be used to conquer this region.

game2011-08-2713-33-18-04.jpg

The Baron sends us some veteran units as reinforcements. It is time to crush the Atreides. But first...

game2011-08-2713-34-07-18.jpg

...the native population must be informed who is in charge around here.

game2011-08-2713-34-59-60.jpg

:incline:

game2011-08-2713-35-32-32.jpg

game2011-08-2713-35-39-81.jpg

game2011-08-2713-35-52-76.jpg

The Atreides are overwhelmed, this has been way too easy.

game2011-08-2713-36-40-34.jpg

harkonnenmentat.jpg
: This better not be your last success Commander.

game2011-08-2713-36-51-50.jpg

Now we can move on to the more challenging missions.

FMV - Lessons learned

Fuck the natives and ally with the Sardaukar. But in the end it will be the Hivemind that will decide who to ally
with and not the mentat.

FMV - Trust him like a brother

As if having the mentat watch you wasn't enough the blond midget is tagging along. [sigh] The things you must endure to secure a future full of concubines and spice for yourself.

Regardless now is the time to choose!

game2011-08-2713-40-18-09.jpg

game2011-08-2713-40-26-43.jpg

game2011-08-2713-40-28-50.jpg

game2011-08-2713-40-31-64.jpg

These are the four territories that we can attack at the moment. Also a reserve army can be redeployed to bolster defenses
in a region in case of an enemy attack.

The campaign objective is simple, eliminate one House by conquering their capital on Arrakis. Obviously the region with the faction
insignia is the capital so a few other regions will have to be conquered first. Also sandstorms block access to certain regions preventing an assault.

VOTING TIME

Which of the following territories shall House Harkonnen attack?

1) Hagga Basin (Atreides) - Refugee civilians are escaping from our rule in this area. They must be punished.
2) Pasty Mesa (Atreides) - Fremen are lurking around in the region. Allying with them may be beneficial.
3) Mushtarmal Ridge (Ordos) - Elite Sardaukar troops are present in the area. We could help them and gain their aid.
4) Chin Rock (Ordos) - For some reason the Sardaukar are attacking us from this region. We should investigate.

Who should the Harkonnen ally with if the chance to do so presents itself in the next mission?

a) The Fremen - Natives make good cannon fodder.
b) The Sardaukar - An alliance with them will demoralize our enemies.

Also if you believe that the images are too big I may lower the resolution if enough people bitch about it.

I like how hilariously evil the Harkonen are   Even better, they seem to have great fun from it and don't have any angsty issues. Anyways, I vote for 3 and B, the more we are, the merrier.

b) Screw the damn natives.

3 and B

We should take care of the Ordos as first order of business, they clearly present the more sinister foe. We can wipe this 'noble' Atreides from the face of Arrakis with our rear guard. Honor and nobility do not belong on the battlefield. But this fools shall learn soon enough!

Also what do we care about the puny, hillbilly natives? We can use them as slaves at best. We should work towards an alliance with the mighty imperial gua... I mean Sardaukars.

PS:
Never played this, is the endgame the same as in the original Dune 2?
after conquering enough territories both the other houses team up on you, in a logically very fishy move? I mean House Atreides and Ordos working together? Ha, that's like Churchill and Stalin working together... Oh wait a minute...

The Atreides are too weak to be of your concern.

Crush the Ordos first...and gain the favor of the Sardaukar.

2a - Unless the game takes some liberties with the books, the Fremen are at least as bloodthirsty as the Sardaukars, twice as dangerous and obviously much more adapted to Arrakis.

I thought you couldn't ally with the Fremen at all as a Harkonnen. So yeah, not much to do on the Atreides side, better to go for the Ordos territories and get the Sardaukar.

Also, Harkonnen aren't evil - just practical and honest about being self-indulgent and enjoying their lives. Haven't played this game, so don't know how far that fact has been raped in it.
