Guy Ritchie is not a subtle director, he wants you to notice his presence.
If we talked "scholarly" I think we should say that a good direction should accompany and enrich the story in such a way that you remain enthralled WITHOUT noticing specific gimmicks.
If we talk about mindless entertainment anything goes I guess, and some of his sequences are indeed entertaining.
But could one stomach 2 or 3 such films in a row?
I personally doubt it, and this is why conventional wisdom should never be dismissed out of hand.

Guy Ritchie bores me to tears. Never forget he was Madonna's cuck for a time.

    :2/5:

Lousy effects, bad dialogue, and terrible casting choices.

The first two episodes outshine the last two, but I'm partial to origins of the story rather than conclusions.

Jamey Sheridan is beyond corny as Randall Flag.

Thief (1981) by Michael Mann, starring James Caan, Tuesday Weld and so on. Really odd how much of a well kept secret this is for a great 1980s crime flick. Michael Mann That Other Guy plays a safecracker who specialises in diamonds, taking the most lucrative and most technically demanding jobs. He is the best, and the Chicago mafia wants him in their stable while he wants to keep his independence, establish a family and retire after doing a few more jobs. The results are predictable, unfolding in a film noir fashion. Was the first Max Payne inspired by Thief? I would not be surprised if it was the case. This movie is intensely visual, perhaps one of the best-looking 1980s movies. The night scenes, shot in icy cold colours, are nothing but spectacular, a perfect vision of 1980s corporate America, which is further improved by the Tangerine Dream synth score. It has an almost cyberpunk-like style, which is also helped by how technically accurate it is. The movie's creators dedicated a lot of effort to learning about safecracking, consulting both former criminals and police inspectors for authenticity. This pays off big time in the break-in sequences, which are a perfect mix of authenticity and visual power. :5/5:

The most memorable thing from Thief, aside from the coffee shop scene with perfect lighting, is the absolutely fantastic score by Tangerine Dream. Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive reminds me of Thief A LOT.

Just got back from seeing "Hateful Eight", I give it :3/5: and a half. I didn't like "Inglorious bastards" and thought "Django" was only so-so, but this one got closer to the Tarantino I love. The gore is overdone but I didn't mind it that much. Actors are great, Kurt Russell is still the shit and necromancing Ennio Morricone for the musical score is the kind of feat that makes Tarantino Tarantino. Nice to see him back on track, even if not top notch. Will watch again.

Why on earth would we say that? That's like saying a painting isn't really art if you can distinguish the individual brush strokes.

Which version did you watch? from the bluray? Michael Mann fucked with the color scheme/grading for the new restoration, but fortunately limited edition of UK BD does have the original version on pretty good quality.

Comparison between the new blue tint and the original color scheme:

Fucking directors messing with the color grading on their old films, leave them the fuck alone.

I mean that's not the first thing you notice. You see the painting (movie) and at first you perceive the big picture and are taken by it, which is what is supposed to happen, as a general rule.
The brushes (directing choices and techniques) are still there and aren't going anywhere. If you get closer to the piece (rewatch the movie critically) you can appreciate them with increasing awareness.

That's not what happens with Ritchie. You notice the direction first.

It was Arrow's UK release with the director's cut. I was suitably impressed, although I want to see the original now.

...well, it was a proper Blu-ray disk, I guess. :M

    Deadpool - :4/5:

Saw it last night and enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. Not a fan of crude humor but for some reason it worked in this movie. The 4th wall breaking jokes are funny and keeps it from taking itself too seriously at several points. Also, the "love story" angle actually works and makes Deadpool likable... not a good guy/ superhero, but a character you can root for. If that part of the movie had not worked it would have failed and come across as just low brow/ juvenile try hard humor. The two hours flew by and was surprised when it ended as there was no point when I was bored or waiting for something interesting to happen. Don't necessarily think a hard R rating needs to be plastered on too many comic book movies as this rating "fits" the crudeness of the character (language, sex, violence). However, a violent, hard R Wolverine (not Jackman) or Punisher movie can perhaps now be entertained by the suits at Sony and Marvel. Unfortunately, they'll most likely leave these type Marvel movies to lower tier characters.

Also, the best Stan Lee cameo yet... dirty old man.

All these fucking superhero movies coming out, makes me hate hollywood even more for not making a sequel to Dredd.

We can't get a sequel to the best comic book movie in decades, but you can fucking make AntMan, captain shitmerica and other stupid shit?

    Really?

You can shove all your Deadpool, antman, transformers, guardians of the shitgalaxy, avengers ultron superman fuckedbatman shit movies up your fucking ass.

    Fuck.

I'd rather have my ballsack drilled with razorsharp nails and my body set aflame, than watch 10 seconds more of any fucking bland superheroez movie coming out from the cesspool that is hollywood. Pure cancer.

The movie didn't make any money. Pretty simple.

And this is actually the second Dredd box office failure since that Stallone travesty from the 90s didn't make much either. Give it another couple of decades, maybe someone else will try again.

Thanks for being that pissed. I am too but since you're the one who wrote that very rage expressive sentence, reading it made me smile. And smiling is always a welcome relief, even if a brief one.

Now back to rage mode : The younger me could probably never believe what the present me says, but fuck my past innocence : superhero movies need to die !
