Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire
Is it just me, or are the days of massive epicness over; - at least for now?
During a not so hunge time period, amongst others titles like Shadowrun Returns, Shadowrun Online, Wasteland 2, Dead State, D:OS, PoE and even Torment were Kickstarted.
Lastly nothing similar seems to be happening. Or am I missing something here?
I mean yeah, InSomnia looks promising, After Reset might be intersting if it isn't a scam, but even if they turn out good, that's not the same as the calibers mentioned above.

I don't think right now would be a great time to Kickstart major projects, as a lot of people are probably somewhat wary of investing more money until we see more results from those major Kickstarters you named. That said, I hear Obsidian are planning a new Kickstarter in the fall.

Solarix is a ‘psychological survival horror’ game featuring massively detailed open-ended levels encompassing both survival and stealth-gameplay styles.

Sorry, I won't add this, they say that the project is almost finished and this is why they ask for so little money, I am not convinced, seems more as a way to get additional funding hoping to get much more than asked.
Also, they are using Unreal, which commercial license is around three hundred thousands dollars, if they have that kind of money it makes even less sense to ask for so little, plus they are probably to fail.

Unreal 4 is a $19 a month subscription for developers, and they can sell the game if they give a 5% royalty of the gross revenue.
Unreal 3 is available for $99 and there is no payment until the game makes over $50k in gross revenue. Then a 25% royalty is due for money made over that amount.

This got almost 2 million dollars a few months ago. Proof, in my opinion, that people are still willing to throw money, provided an interesting enough concept and signs of actually being competent about it. Sure, it's not like the early days, when you could just make a MSPaint picture of an elf and get $400,000, but then again, maybe that's for the best.

Unfortunately, many early successes that ended up either failing or spiralling out of control lead to other, much tighter and more serious projects not getting funded or getting underfunded, once Kickstarter Cynicism™ and Kickstarter Fatigue™ settled in.

Kickstarter behaved a lot like the early days of (wild and ridiculous) market economy in post-socialist countries, in the early 90s. If you had enough money and an idea for a business back then, you were set, there was no such thing as a business failing, as people would invest in anything and buy any product, especially in countries that endured decades of severe shortages (i.e. Romania, RPGs etc).

The worst part is that the big hit just didn't seem to make that much of a wave. Did anyone do sequels? Why does Logic Artists work on some 3D stealth thingy, and Harebrained Scheme on some board game thingy? Where's FTL 2 or another game like that?
It feels like kickstarter is just a small, fruitless resuscitation of our beloved genres. Who knows, maybe with Div:OS' popularity and what will come out of the release of PoE and the space sim games, we might get back on track.
