Imagine that you are someone like fuzi0n.
You have pledged more than 200$ for a Wasteland 2 cos you were hoping to get a game like Fallout 3.
After months of delays the beta is out and the game is not your cup of tea, whats worst, you are insulted by hardcore fans, they call you a retard etc. What you gonna do? But the better question is what you CAN do about that?

Ofcourse this is one of the "things go bad" scenarios. There are much worst, like game being a unpatchable bug fest, or dssapointing in terms of gameplay, or being vapoware etc.

    I dont now.

I think the Derek Smart can be right in this interview http://www.gametrailers.com/videos/he7qdm/line-of-defense-derek-smart--the-outspoken-developer around 5:50 he criticizes kickstarter idea.

    You have two options:

    1) Think less like an investor and more like a donor. Feel good for contributing to something that has made people happy, even if it's not your cup of tea. Maybe you can even broaden your horizons and learn to enjoy it.

    2) Accept that, as an investor, some of your investments will inevitably fail. Be more careful next time.

There's tons of butthurt in the gaming world already and yet it moves on. A bit more from KS isn't going to do anything. It's not even going to do anything to KS.

It's your own fucking fault for being retarded and not reading any of the game's features and description and not watching the kickstarter campaign videos, where Fargo clearly said he wanted to make a game in the spirit of the original Wasteland, which is closer to Fallout 1 and 2 rather than Fallout 3. It was very often stated that W2 will be isometric and turn based and NOT first person under any circumstances, so if you pledge 200 bucks in the hopes of getting another Fallout 3, you deserve losing your money for being an utter and complete retard who hasn't paid enough attention in elementary school when the teachers tried to teach how to read.

I think Derek Smart isn't very smart (hurrrrr). People rage when they play shit games - whether they paid 60 bucks in GameStop or Kickstarter for it won't make a huge difference IMO. Of course, it will make a huge difference in terms of "will Kickstarter continue to be a succesful platform for videogames?" That remains to be seen.

Personally, I haven't donated a shit-ton to anything and I keep my expectations low. I will be dissappointed if something is broken/unplayable, but beyond that the amount of jewgold I've donated is no more than I expect a somewhat enjoyable experience from Dead State/Wasteland/Xenonauts/Legends of Eisenwald. I didn't donate to The Banner Saga, it looks like it's not my type of game.

If it turns out Wasteland 2 is an amazing game that revitalizes the genre, awesome. If it's just a mediocre turn-based game, well, nothing of value was lost.

Heh, Derek Smart seems like a really cool guy in that interview. Completly different from what I imagined him to be based on all the internet drama around him.

Pretty much this. Besides, I wasted more money on AAA titles than I put into Kickstarter, and at least this way I feel I'm participating in something with potential, not feeding a bunch of suits that exploit slave labour.

I haven't pledged or paid anything to a single Kickstarter project. While I like the concept of it, and I appreciate that without Kickstarter we probably wouldn't be getting Wasteland 2, I will patiently wait for the game to be released and I'll buy it then.

I thought fuzi0n's issue is that he went in expecting the game to have a central character rather than a title where you make a full party from scratch. It's less "why isn't this game like Fallout 3" and more "Why isn't this game like Baldur's Gate/PST/Fallout etc".

In the cases where kick-starter games don't live up to their hype, I'd just write it off as a game that could've had a lot of potential and in those situations I'm ok with the money I pledged (I could only pledge $15 for WL2 at the time but I pledged a lot more for Dead State). I'm ok with funding towards games with a lot of potential even if they didn't pay off rather than games that are completely soul less from the start, hell I buy Obsidian games don't I?

I don't think it'll stop me from donating to Kickstarter titles though. I mean, yeah I might be a bit more weary of an inXile Kickstarter if they might possibly screw up Wasteland 2, but that's not going to stop me from donating to an Obsidian or Iron Tower or other developer's Kickstarter. Worst comes to worst I'll just cut down the amount I pledge so that I don't waste too much money.

On a totally unrelated note, I just played Xenonauts yesterday. I can't wait till the game is finished.

Xenonauts is the closest thing we've ever had to a worthy UFO successor. I'm torn between wanting to play the fuck out of every beta release and saving it until I can try the finished game.
