So, looks like its my time in the breach to do a RK47-istic LP.

So, what is this game about?
Kantai Collection, also known as Kancolle, is a online browser game in which one assumes the role of an admiral, assembles a fleet of kanmusu ("ship girl", girls based on World War II era Japanese ships and submarines) and battles against fleets of alien enemy warships. If you frequent a hentai site you probably already run into a doujin or two (or a lot more, considering its rapidly growing fandom) of this particular game. Suffice to say tentacles are in.

:mhd:

So what's so special about this free-to-play title you may ask? Let's find out.

01.png

At the beginning it was supposed to be a very-niche game aimed towards IJN-otakus. Unfortunately, they hired some famous voice actresses for the characters (and yes, they - more than 150 and rising as more are added - are all fully voiced, with one actress giving her voice for several characters), then some famous people talked about playing this and since then everything went horribly right.

So right that, to actually play this game, you have to enter a lottery that takes place every few days. For a free-to-play browser game. Talk about an EA-wet-dream game were people are actually standing in line to play in. Yours truly, with some proper preparation managed to get in on his first try, there were 3500 free places in that lottery.

First of to start the game we must pick one from five destroyer as our Secretary and Flagship (for the time being until we get some larger hulls). I choose Murakumo, the other DD's are pretty much equal stats-wise. Yes, stats... and micromanagement, in abundance.

04.png

From the get-go the tutorial sends us into the Factory were we should construct an additional ship for our fleet. The results are random. There are specific amounts you use to get a specific size of a ship but even that can get you something else.

Either way we use a standard "recipe" for a destroyer - Ammo x30, Fuel x30, Steel x30, Bauxite x30 (there is also a possibly of getting a light cruiser or a very small chance of a heavy cruiser). After we start building the timer shows up. 1h hour to build tells us it will be an CL(in this time range 4 classes) or a CA(in this time range 2 classes). In a western game of this type it would probably take you something like 24h, unless you have 20$.

05.png

And, because there is nothing stopping me from starting a second ship, I again use the same amount of resources. This time it's defiantly a DD. You may notice the resources are being added with a rate of something like a 1unit/1minute.

06-yuudachi.png

So, let see what we got. First of the destroyer. It's Yuudachi which is nice since in late-game, after modernization she is the strongest "common" DD (there are also rare ones, like Yukikaze or Shimakaze), because of that she gained the nickname "Yuudachi The Destroyer".

07-jintsuu.png

This is Light Cruiser Jintsuu, should add a bit more HP to our small fleet.

08.png

As you can see this CL, power wise, is a bit stronger than a DD. Thankfully her armor is twice as thick.

09.png

Next up in the tutorial are Quests.

10.png

Pretty standard affair, do this and get this many resources. Some are daily, some can be completed only once. As you progress further more of them pop up.

11-shirayuki.png

Because we completed the "Build 1 Ship" we get some resources and an additional DD - Shirayuki.

12.png

Now we can start a Sortie.

13.png

In this screen we can Sortie, Exercise (PVP) or go on an Expedition (to do that you needed another fleet, the slot for that unlocks as soon as you get 6 ships).

14.png

There are 5 worlds and each one has 4 sub-worlds. For now at least.

15.png

We choose our first and only fleet.

16.png

We choose the formation. Line Ahead (the first one) makes the best use of our pathetic firepower and torpedoes which are the only decent punch we have.

17.png

Not much of a challenge, the opposition consists of only a single Alien DD.

18.png

The fight goes by fast, first guns at medium range, then at close range torpedoes. We took some insignificant damage that's why the rating isn't 'Super S'.

19.png

Our cruiser managed to do the most damage, she received the MVP.

20.png

The maps aren't linear, they have forks here and there. The compass directs us at random, or if there are some hidden requirements (only DD's - for example can take a certain route).

21.png

Second battle, the Boss of the map.

22.png

We exchanged rounds and torpedoes. took some damage. The enemy is at his last legs.

23.png

Time for the second stage - Night Battle. We can either pursue and enter the stage - where everybody deals more damage - or decline as we don't want to take more damage and lose the experience. Of course we continue.

24.png

Murakumo ends the battle with the first salvo.

25.png

Back at the base. After an engagement we obviously have to resupply our warship waifus with Fuel and Ammo they expanded. If we don't do that they won't be able to fight at 100%. While the DD's and CL's don't need much Battleships and Carriers - justifiable - guzzle Fuel and Ammo like there's no tomorrow.

26.png

Another stop we have to make.

27.png

The dock enables us to repair our damaged ships. The DD has taken medium damage and will take only a minute and fifty seconds to repair. Again, a bigger ship will need more. To speed that up you can use 'repair bucket' which can be gained by doing quest and expedition. The same goes for constructing ships, the 'blowtorch' can also be acquired the same way.

28-shikinami.png

A map drop gave us another DD, soon enough we won't know what to do with all those junk destroyers. Drops are pretty common and with some grind the '100 ships limit' will be reached quite fast.

29.png

Those are the basics pretty much, an introduction to the game. There is also equipment development and some other stuff like specializes units, girls clothes getting torn when they take damage... and the marriage system for all your waifu needs.

Never changed Japan, never change.

Maybe I will do some small updates as I progress, who knows.

It's a pity it's all in moon runes. Japs have a pathological fear of receiving money from foreigners who would be willing to brave the kawaii to sink some battleships. :P
