So what would you guys recommend to a casualfag like myself, who loves RPGs of the Fallout era but hasn't played any older RPGs except Daggerfall and Krondor?

I have Wasteland installed on my PC and I'm about to play it.

Wizardry VII: Crusaders of the Dark Savant, Might and Magic: World of Xeen, Ultima VII, Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos, Dark Sun: Shattered Lands.... any of these will do nicely, and they aged well enough.

In terms of Wasteland, though. I'm guessing it's a game that I need to RTFM first.

I don't think the game is particularly hard, but the interface has aged poorly. It was already archaic by the mid-90s, let alone today.

felipepepe has also had issues with freezing. But most people aren't having any issues at all. What's going on here?

Make sure your game is up-to-date (particularly important for Steam Mac installs on older OS).

Second step is always to update monitor and video drivers. I had to update my monitor drivers to play.

Third step is reviewing the list of known issues on the inXile Wasteland 1 boards.

Anyone who follows the known issues and solutions and has updated drivers and is still having trouble should contact inXile support and you'll quickly be taken care.

Do include as much hardware, OS platform/ environment information as you can in your support request; including a DxDiag if your issue is graphics or video related.

Biggest issue I've run into so far is the mouse being nearly completely unuseable.

I guess I just need to use the keyboard like the good old days.

An update was released that adds an "Extras" subdirectory in the game's main directory.

All the manuals and stuff are now available.

Here are all the oldschool portraits, in animated GIF format.

And here are all the new high res portraits, sadly unanimated.

You've also got the game's soundtrack in uncompressed WAV format.

And some complimentary Wasteland 2 wallpapers.

Most of the new portraits are indeed surprisingly good, even if unanimated. I like both the new version and the original one.

One problem is that the GOG version has mouse problems in the unsmoothed version with original portraits. For some reasons, it does not always recognize clicks, so you have to click several times.

NEW PATCH: http://wasteland.inxile-entertainment.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=33&t=4904

We haven't really done version tracking for WL1, but Steam gamers may have noticed a new patch rolled out. It'll be up on GOG.com shortly to.

Patchnotes:

  • Occasional missing paragraphs are fixed
  • Occasional missing uprezzed portraits are fixed
  • Mouse sensitivity is now overridden to be uniform on both axis
  • Frequency of freezing should be reduced. If you still experience freezes, the workaround to only use the keyboard still works
  • Volume options added to the options menu
  • Dosbox config file is now exposed and can be edited AT YOUR OWN RISK
    # When run with Wasteland, this file gets copied to:

    # %localappdata%\inXile entertainment\Wasteland\wl.conf (Windows 7/8)
    # C:\Local Settings\%USER%\Local Settings\Application Data\inXile entertainment\Wasteland\wl.conf (Windows XP/Vista)
    # ~/Library/Application Support/Wasteland/wl.conf (OSX)
    # ~/.wasteland/wl.conf (Linux)

    # where you may EDIT AT YOUR OWN RISK

Let me know if you encounter any problems with these things we fixed (if there's still some missing paragraphs we somehow missed, etc)
