With all the buzz surrounding the upcoming release of Divinity: Original Sin some of the new Kickstarter projects may try slipping through the cracks. However, letting InSomnia do that without ending up in the spotlight would be a crying shame, after all, it is a self-professed RPG set in a brutal Dieselpunk universe.

So, here it is - a would-be vapourware Dieselpunk RPG.

On a colossal spaceship, a character awakens from cryogenic sleep—unknowingly holding humanity’s last best hope in his bare hands...

InSomnia is a Dieselpunk RPG that transports you to a retro-futuristic space station on a 400- year journey in search of a new home.

Explore the world as a warrior—or hide in the shadows as an outcast. Perhaps you’ll be a charismatic leader—or maybe you’ll become an apex predator with bloodshot eyes and a thrill for the kill. Either way, you will have to muster the strength to survive in order to find out why mankind has embarked on such a risky journey through uncharted space. InSomnia offers an epic, non-linear storyline with many ‘points of no return’ (think of them as forks in the road) and deep, immersive gameplay. The fate of the space station’s many inhabitants will depend on your choices.

Join us in the metal corridors and crumbling machinery of InSomnia!

Main Features
  • Experience a dieselpunk RPG with Noir stylings featuring man made apocalyptic landscapes imbued with a dark, ambient soundtrack and echoes of a post-war civilization.
  • Play through the atmospheric single-player campaign alone or co-op with friends.
  • Develop your character through tactical real-time combat in single player and co-op scenarios, combining hundreds of skills and abilities, along with managing a huge amount of customizable items and equipment for an experience unique to every player
  • Survive starvation, extreme weather conditions and injuries directly affecting your character’s well-being. Search for valuable technology and resources and find them in unexpected places.
  • Break free from leveling systems, character classes and unwanted grind with a flexible classless system and storytelling encouraging unorthodox approaches.
  • Enjoy randomly generated events and missions in both single player and co-op that makes each of your playthroughs more unique and interesting.
  • FREE post-release support - we will regularly release minor content updates, which will allow you to participate in various additional scenarios, each of them will add more depth and details to mysterious world of InSomnia, with rich storylines updated every 2-3 months with both single player and co-op in mind.
  • Embark on non-linear quests and missions -each of them can be solved by using a variety of different (and sometimes unexpected) solutions.
  • DRM Free & Steam version - backers will recieve both DRM Free and Steam versions of the game

Estimated release is Q4 2015 for PC, Mac and Linux.

Sounds promising and looks good so far - though PR Speechcraft of these guys could use a little improvement. Head more to the InSomnia Kickstarter page to find out lots of additional details and check out the visuals, or talk to the devs directly in our own thread here.

Looks good, but will it play good?

  1. Considering their exposition skills on the Kickstarter, i highly doubt their ingame writing will be much better;
  2. Real time combat doesnt sound very interesting;
  3. Their FREE DLC plan doesnt look to be in any way achievable;
  4. Their random non-linear quest and world design sounds like Diablo.

Well, with the KS money, they could hire an editor to fix their stuff for them, so 1. isn't such a big issue as long as they're aware of their shortcomings. Real-time is a bit more iffy though, definitely, I suspect it to play like Fallout Tactics or Planet Alcatraz. Free DLC is a hit and miss thing, if they don't sell enough copies, they probably won't deliver more than one or two of those. Don't see anything wrong with 4, I think they meant that just some elements will be randomized, or rather, there'll probably be a pool of available quests, but they'll randomize which you'll be able to do in a given playthrough. Of course, clarification wouldn't hurt. Guyduk?

Game really seems like it has a lot of interesting potential, just not entirely sure where that will end up.

On a colossal spaceship,

a risky journey through uncharted space

the space station’s many inhabitants

the metal corridors and crumbling machinery

So which is it? Space ship? Station? And then this:

Survive starvation, extreme weather conditions

What the fuck are extreme weather conditions on a space ship? Or a space station? I feel like I have no idea where this game actually takes place.

And the funny thing is that pretty much everyone agrees with this.
Usually, projects are met with praise or screams of impossibility, but this one gets an "Well, this is interesting. Let's see" from almost everybody.
I really wonder why.

Think most of the action will be taking place on the ground. There might be some chapters IN SPACE though, as far as I've understood some chapters will be showing a totally different perspective.

Probably because people are interested in a "fresh" setting/theme and some of the features sound nice, yet the video is sort of all over the place. Basically what I get from this is that it's an action(ish) game where you can totally play strategically(or not) and experience loads of hand crafted randomly generated content.

Kz3r0, in what way are the two related? I was kinda trying to follow your train of thought there but probably missed a crucial link.

Edit: Oh, I see. Yeah, different groups. Hopefully.

Actually, I mentioned it a while back. We don't have any illusions regarding our ability to get a competent translation going without outside help, so a lot of those KS money are going to go into hiring some competent authors/editors to adapt our dialogue and storyline.

Don't see anything wrong with 4, I think they meant that just some elements will be randomized, or rather, there'll probably be a pool of available quests, but they'll randomize which you'll be able to do in a given playthrough. Of course, clarification wouldn't hurt.

You're right, it's a pool of randomised quests/encounters, plus some minor stuff, like prop/cover placement.

Actually, the first thrid of the game is going to take place on Earth pre-Exodus. Then you get stuffed into a cryo chamber and awakened just in time to see the consequences bite you right in ass.

Guyduk what about that demo you've promised?
Too little time to test it, so it's getting delayed for a bit.

I can't wait to get immersed in that atmospheric atmosphere.
Well, I have to say presentation is not our strongest suit for sure. That being said, we're willing to take our cues from the audience, so if there's anything you folks want to see in the next updates, tell us about it and we'll try to work it in.

Thanks, Guyduk, that sounds pretty good. Do I get it right that we'll see some consequences to our choices after awakening from cryo?
