Maybe Firefly? I haven't seen it, but it's sitting on my shelf looking at me, while I'm looking at it, and I think it wants me to pay it forward. It also has a multiracial cast, if that's the kind of thing that floats your boat.

There's always "My Two Dads"', I think that's sorta like Twin Peaks.

One-season wonder... did it end in a cliffhanger?

Black Mirror. Only three episodes. You won't regret it.

yes (except Oz turned into almost soap-opera bullshit in it's final seasons)

    yes. quite entertaining and underrated

i would also suggest Farscape, maybe The Killing (season 2 just started), The Lost Room, Odyssey 5 (probably the best SF show ever, but it ends in a cliffhanger that will make you crush skulls and cruse the heavens), and Terriers

    (+ all above)...
    Community, Curb Your Enthusiasm, 30 Rock, Louie, Arrested Development, Extras, Metalocalypse, South Park(incline since season 14), Bored to Death (selected episodes), for excellent writing mixed with good humour (hardest things to combine I think);
Downton Abbey (1st season), Sherlock (without last popamole episode), Misfits, Life on Mars, Lie to Me(1st season), Deadwood(1st season), Wallander (both SWE and GB) for execution and plot,
Freaks and Geaks, Gavin & Stacey for the way they handled the climaxes, character arcs and conflict resolutions.

Deadwood if you haven't already seen it. The first two seasons are the best non-comedies I've ever seen on television. The third is still really good.

Wonderfalls could be a nice spring series. It's odd, it has a fun mood and it's short, so you get to go out drinking beer more. It's about a chick who does odd things voices tell her to.

I'd add a vote for "Breaking bad" and "The wire" but since it's about "Help me find a series I may like" and not "Post your favourite series" it's important to note that I piss on "Twin peaks" and don't think much of "Babylon 5" so I'm not sure you should try them.
You may consider joining the "Game of thrones" circle-jerk if you haven't already done so. It's a solid series, fanboys notwithstanding.

If you really like Twin Peaks, maybe X-Files? They're not the same by any stretch (I don't think we'll ever get something with such an odd combination as Twin Peaks again), but at times you can definitely see the influence of Twin Peaks on the X-Files.

Also, the show Psych has a pretty cool tribute episode to Twin Peaks in the fifth or sixth season called Dual Spires. Pretty funny with a lot of little inside jokes (and some not so little ones) with a lot of the actors from the show playing in the episode.

Sure, but then again that decline in quality happens to most series that have 4+ seasons. Even The Sopranos suffered somewhat from it.

Surprisingly, not as much as one would expect. Most of the major questions raised during the previous episodes were answered rather nicely in the end, even though the ending itself naturally gave birth to a whole set of new ones.

Very good list. Let me add a few: Damages, Kill Point, Day Break, Standoff.

If you're into watching some older stuff, check out Kindred: The Embraced which is based on White Wolf's WoD franchise. I downloaded the DVD but I think you can find the episodes on JewTube.
