I have been keeping up with the AoD development and after reading some interviews with Vince, decided to download Prelude to Darkness. I knew it was an older game so I downloaded it onto an older laptop and have been trying to play it for 3 days now. I enjoyed party creation and getting familiar with the backgrounds, but when I actually started moving around the game world, man, buggy doesn't come close to describing this. CTDs, and total crashes at a rate of 5-10 per hour. I've only been able to complete the Cranos quest and visit the abandoned hut and follow tracks to another house, fight three combats and that's about it before I get so frustrated with the crashes that the laptop is in danger of being thrown across the room. Will someone please tell me if there is a better version to download than 1.8 or if there is any way to optimize this game to run with a minimum of crashes on Windows XP SP 3. I want to give this game every chance based on all the recommendations, but there's only so much a man can take...

    Thanks for any responses,

    D

What worked for me was running it in my desktop's native resolution and then turning the animation frame skip off.

You should be able to find 1.7 with a little search. Some people have had better luck with it.
