I have a fast computer and a lot of memory. The only part where there is slowdown is when you can see AI movement. When AI has 20 fleets, it takes a while to show all theirs movements, which can be solved by pressing space.
Wait. You never even pirated it and you are bitching?

Congrats on that, I had to abandon my Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth game because the Ottomans decided to simply bore me to death with their turn times.

Seriously though, while all the Total Wars reach a point where the gameplay comes down to tedious map painting without anybody being a challenge, here it happened way quicker.

The AI is fundamentally incapable of maintaining formation and using tactics. Even with DarthMod destroying them was a piece of cake. The same goes for the campaign map. I'm not sure if they ever got around to fixing the AI aversion to using ship transports, as that resulted in things like India becoming the most powerful nation, due to no British influence.

The fact that the game was so bland didn't help matters. Every nation had the same units, sans minor differences. The removal of the RP elements and the possibility of buying generals on the fly made them useless. One town provinces were also a terrible, terrible idea. This was shown by France being annexed by either Spain or the Netherlands in a matter of minutes. Sieges also felt odd.

They just added on a boatload of crap, that didn't function very well, while the core problems with the AI, diplomacy got even worse.

You can accumulate quite a lot of infamy from conquest, and when majority of countries are in war with you, you have just a few trade partners.

If they would modify the system to: buildings would be destroyed during conquest, and infrastructure would go down, it would be much harder.

Just recently I seen AI to try cavalry attack from a left wing. Three cavalry units, one of them was a lifeguard, waited close in the forest, while other units moved forward. I send a one infantry unit and elephants at them, and tried to use canons. I would need two infantry units and elephants to dispose them safely, which was of course impossible because they will not be able to return before other units would arrive. While the ratio of forces wasn't in my favor, the result was bloody mess where general ran away, elephants too, and just one 15 man unit decided they will not give up and with two others killed stuff around, meanwhile the fight moved away from cannons and thus they could use few canister shots before enemy units moved at them again. Of course things might be easier if these enemy horse artillery would be taken care off before the battle was nearly decided... The whole battle began because enemy reinforced theirs troops in city and then jumped at the army close to the city before it could be reinforced and assault the city.

I also seen AI to move back to reform theirs forces. So they are holding formation even when it would hurt them.

One province in India, I conquered, had taxes 50 gold per turn. Of course after these provinces are improved they are much better, but it also assumes you have money for these improvenments and can stomach popularity problems caused by glamour for reform. I started by blowing all stuff to pieces and building in anew to have some fun, and first Brittish attack arrived one turn before I was able to finish walls in capital. Because the port was guarded, they were not able to attack directly, and I was able to finish walls in time. Then they attacked, the whole stack. I had general and at least two quality units with high morale in city, which saved my hide, barely. Then there was an attack by United provinces, again with rather brutal stack. After which was a nice retribution by attacking theirs holdings in SA. After that they probably either though few artillery units are enough or didn't have money to add some infantry they deployed a small stack. Then British attacked my only province with high end shipyard, then they did yet another naval invasion into neighboring province. Poland-Lithuania invaded syria rebels, my holdings in Egypt, and Ceylon. They also invaded my holdings in NA, which delayed my attack against British until I reconquered it by invasion fleet I just moved against Britain. You know it's a nasty shock to sail finally against British and see: "Hey wasn't that an invasion fleet moving against our holding?". These bastards delayed invasion of Britain util I reconquered my NA holdings. (Then I sneaked from unexpected direction, lost only my reinforcing artillery, and after city siege, battle on countryside, and second city siege conquered London. British government ran into Ireland.)

It looked like they entertained each other and didn't have time for me. When they started to have time for me, flood gates opened.

India. Bargir, Sith line infantry. Elephants. Mortars and cannons, Camel gunners, and desert nomads, mounted skirmishers, Hindu, and Sith warriors, lancers, Sipahs.
Ottomans. Fucking Janissaries who are hard as nails, warriors, line infantry, mutibareled (fucking) guns that are effective especially against India troops, normal cannons, hand mortar troops.
Russia. Bland (crappy) line infantry, excellent and expensive line infantry, multiple different and some even excellent cavalry units.
While the empire era is known for line infantry and cannons, machine guns came later, there is some variety. (And these countries do feel diferently and should use different tactic. India for example doesn't have fire by rank, thus they must use combined arms and cannons. Prussia might do: we have best line infantry and we are Prussians. Russia tears stuff with cavalry. Ottomans have Janissaries and other stuff. The most brain dead are British, but they have money and high morale.)

Actually it's a single country multiple towns system. As long as AI protects the capital, they are mostly fine and they are just doing skirmishes on the countryside.
Sieges tends to be pretty bad, but they might be interesting when you set timer to 20 minutes to prevent artillery abuse. (If they would remove wall climbing, it would be even better.)
Two main problems are only two seasons per year, when they would use four and decreased army movenment, it would become more strategic.
Second problem is how they are handling assassins. They are much less survivable, however theirs numbers are much more limited because they appear as a result of having theirs building. Also they are too slow.

It has its problems even after patch 1.6, or in WBB Edition version (aka pirate prepatched and precracked version). Units occassionally forgot firing at stuff, though when they are fired upon, they remember quickly. Cannons don't have switch: DON'T FIRE WHEN YOUR TROOPS ARE MOVING BETWEEN CANNONS AND THE ENEMY. Thought it's probably just a part of a real live during that era. Also there are interface decisions which were done much better in Shogun 2.

But I had a blast with situations like: Enemy infantry teared away my infantry and didn't noticed unit of elefants close. Line infantry... from side... elephant charge, then they continued to the other units. (Also elephant charges through your troops are interesting as well, especially when they will not slaughter enemy units...) Grabbing British steam ship because India shipyards were not able to produce one.

Also government systems and restraints they added were interesting. You could stay with old type of absolutist monarchy (then somehow be able to invent abolishment of slavery without inventing that stuff that would screw you up, or go with one, or two revolutions...)
The concept was somehow interesting. Absolutist monarchies could kick ministers when they become retarded immediately, but they had harsh penalty for glamor for reform thus they were critically dependent on quality ministers. Republics had it easy, ministers gained perks quickly, but when they were shit - touch luck they could be even worse in the next elections. CM were something between.

So there are actually elephants in the game? Now that I did not know. Seems a bit at odds with the timeperiod, but its not like the Total War games with Ninja Romans are known for their historical accuracy.

Yeah there may be multiple towns, but from what I remember holding the capital is all that matters control wise. So France would quickly be reduced to the size of Wurttenberg.

Not really. In India and Southeast-Asia war elephants were still used well into the 18th century, so it's not anachronistic at all.

Not that I'd want to defend the historical accuracy of E:TW tho. STRELTSY WITHOUT MUSKETS LOL

Yes? Whens the last time you downloaded some hentai anime game that some hentai nerd said was great and thought it may actually turn out good?
The games are known for their shitty ai and considering i tend to be extremely picky about my ai i dont think i need to spend hours waiting for and wasting bandwidth for this shitty game to know it has shit ai.

Actually the empire version was generally considered absolute shit iirc. So yeah. I'm bitching without even pirating it

A projectile missed a wall and hit a general that was on street somehow behind. The prince? exploded in flames.
