Serpent Isle is a remake of the 1993 RPG Ultima VII: Part 2 – Serpent Isle by Origin Systems using the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion engine. Considered by many to be the greatest of the Ultima games, Serpent Isle contained a world full of life rarely seen in a game, an interesting plot and quite a few “wow” moments. I chose to remake Serpent Isle to bring this into a 3D world in an attempt to bring these moments to life in a way Ultima fans have never seen before.

Due to previous attempts to create an Ultima game featuring new dialogue, new story… new everything, which have always led to the age-old remake problem of “not having enough time” and “getting distracted” I have instead decided to create this as an almost 1:1 remake of the original game. The original dialogue, quests, locations, furniture… pretty much everything is identical. Which works well because of two reasons:

Elder Scrolls Oblivion’s engine is strangely almost identical to the Serpent Isle one… apart from being in 3D. It contains everything I need, including an advanced scheduling system, to make Serpent Isle come to life

Serpent Isle was a piece of art that really does not need to be changed.
The fact I am creating it as a direct remake also means it can be created a substantial amount faster.

The original Ultima VII: Serpent Isle is perfectly playable in the awesome Exult engine. There is no fucking reason at all to do a remake for this.

Given the level of detail in Serpent Isle...I expect this project to actually be completed around the same time as AoD, my Knights of the Chalice review, and Grimoire.

But with the Oblivion engine we can have immersive next-gen features like level scaling and bloom because that's what the Ultima games always lacked.

No fucking shit. Can't wait till they realize the incredible amount of art assets required to make this a proper SI.

Honestly, with Exult being such a good engine, I have no idea why anyone would attempt such a thing.

Although Exult still hasn't moved past RC 1 iirc.

Speaking of Exult, I'm having some graphics problems. It's perfectly fine in the day, but not at night. The entire palette will change color, so to speak. Sometimes everything will get a blue-tone, sometimes a red-tone, etc. Anyone had similar problems and know a solution? I've tried messing with all the in-game graphics settings without any luck.

No reason to rage, this one is even less likely to go anywhere than your typical fan remake project

Who cares as long as it's fully playable?

Fully playable... with crashes and disappearing items. And I'm pretty sure stealing is still broken (at least they still say in the FAQ that it doesn't yet work as in the original, and when I last played it, I could steal anything and no one cared).

I don't seem to remember encountering any serious problems with Exult

As opposed to the original Serpent Isle, which was dead and lifeless, just like Oblivion.

THEN WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING

Well, the repercussion-free stealing was, frankly, a game-breaker for me :D
Why would you even need to steal though? The broken casino offering endless amounts of gold and the flying carpet to get anywhere from the start wasn't enough?

You NEVER used the Iolo The Thief™ exploit?

I just checked, and yeah they still have not fixed the stealing yet. Or the loot tables (my major beef with it). Still I enjoy playing through it.

Erm, weren't you making one in the NWN2 engine at one point? :P

While I'd prefer to see mods that focus on adding new stories to the ultima series rather than doing remakes, it's cool to see how people interpret the world when remaking them in newer engines too.

Ridiculous. You won't even come close to creating it in any satisfying way.

Ultima 7 in the Oblivion engine. Enough to make anyone throw up.

Who me? Oh no, not me. No, not at all. No siree. *cough* ;) *

And yeah I agree, NEW stuff would be welcome (like the Titans of Ether)

Oh and good to see you here JasonNH. :D Try not to let these angry foul mouthed kids get to you.

* to be honest, the reason I stopped was... WHY does this need a re-make? And then it hit me.. I R DUMB. Oh well.

Well if anything doing a remake probably made you realise some things about the game that you didn't notice before, so it certainly wasn't wasted. Some people never get to the I R DUMB moment.

Right, I'm looking forward to seeing what the Return to Serpent Isle guys come up with. They're working hard and making good progress. Of course, there is my own little project in the works that I hope makes it out one day as well. ;)

Been lurking since 2009 for the lulz and information here. :)

Legit reason is legit. :salute:

When I read it's for Oblivion I was like:

Waay too restrictive and inappropriate engine for this kind of game.
More luck with Dung Siege engine

Not to mention so horribly overambitious project it's not funny.

Is it with The Grumpy Strumpet? And yeah, curious how the Return to SI comes out as well. I really hope they can pull that off.
