Holly shit, those are some gorgeous looking maps. And only a year after Valiant, not to mention just in time to have Doomers focused on something other than BethDoom. :salute:

I'm almost done with Ancient Aliens, currently on map29. Episode 3 is a lot more uneven in quality than the previous two, but thankfully it still has killer maps. I think the most challenging map so far was map18, Illuminati Revealed, in which endlessly spawning monsters create a hectic and tense race towards the three keys. Really liked that one. map15 was also a high point.

Already had several tries at beating Map 18, too many of 'em I think. Not sure if I'm enjoying myself.
Map 16 is probably my favorite from E2 so far, loved the central "hub" with lifting platforms and strikingly different visuals of each "planet", plus difficulty was just right for me taste.

We've been trying out Zandronum's Survival co-op mode, the set number of lives/ level spices things up a little.

Edit: I recorded some SP gameplay

always looking for good level sets with puzzle and/or exploration themes. ones I'd recommend are Epic 2 for it's middle episode (and its taste in cribbing music from Daggerfall and elsewhere), Jim Flynn's maps from Eternal doom, the Master Levels and his own set Enigma... Sheer Poison from the most recent Cacowards is really fascinating and different, especially for a level which sticks to vanilla limits yet indulges in nonsense excess like the end battle where you're tricking Spiderdemons into killing each other while frantically throwing switches. Epic 2 and Sheer Poison both have dream-like sections which seem almost personal to the author & always hits me hard. anyone found other levels in this vein?

ALT, Sacrament and Comatose are brilliant and psychedelic too, all overseen by Lainos I think.

Hah, I'm actually playing thru ALT right now! Well, "replaying it" is a bit closer to truth, as I've beaten the large chunk of it years ago. I still remember the map where I called it a day back then, it had this puzzle with four numbered floors.
Anyway, it is indeed impressive and unique adventurey/exploration-driven megawad, altho puzzles and key hunting can get incredibly tedious at some points. Do love the visuals and atmosphere tho, as well as sheer amount of creativity. I particular like how core textures are oft used in pretty unusual way, like say to create semi-realistic environs like plane crash-site or train station. Brings to mind inventiveness of some 90s wads.

Is that a horse on the second vid? 0/10 :rpgcodex:

From daggerfall. Maybe it's based on the new fallout versions bethesda branded.
His wording was sort of misleading. TC is obviously inspired by Fallout's theme, and he he is basing some of the layouts on locations from Fallout 1, but his TC isn't set in Fallout universe.
Looks p impressive in any way.

Impatience
Some crazed UAC marine is running amok through our facilities!
One imp is tired of waiting around...
QnECY3y.png

Impatience: Doom from a new perspective

*Player plays as an imp, starting in classic imp positions. Primary fire is melee attack, secondary fire is a fireball
*The enemy is the UAC marine, who will run through the levels killing your buddies! Kill him 3 times to advance to the next map (5 times in later levels)
*19 maps done so far. Alternating between doom1 and doom2 maps.
*4 player starts for co op play
*Player can pick up weapons, becoming a sergeant imp, to lead the masses!
*The marine starts with better and better weapons, but loses them after being killed, being forced to pistol start.
*The marine starts with the shotgun by map2, and rocket launcher by map 6. By map 6 he also respawns with a shotgun

Note that the imp can't activate buttons or doors, but most of the doors in each map have been opened, and some platforms have had walk-over triggers added so that imps and the UAC monster can activate them.
Difficulty levels are not what they used to be! Higher difficulty means more allies for you, so UV becomes easy mode, and HMP becomes pretty hard. ITYTD is kind of easy, but far fewer allies for you, and HNTR Is a rough ride, but feels pretty commando
Also the map names are screwed up until I add in the MAPINFO to correct them (is there a way to do this without having to redefine the skies?)

Runs in zdoom and Gzdoom with the doom2.wad

I intend to convert all of doom1 and 2 into this mod, so 59 maps in total. I've done ~9 maps from each, so quite a bit still to go!

If anyone would like to help with this project, the steps to converting a map to IMPatience can be found here:

http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=51988&p=908642#p908642

I would greatly appreciate any help as there are still ~30 maps to do!

Very cool WIP wad, it reminds me of the Half-Life Zombie Edition mod.

I also came across these

Doom 64 'weapons only' wad for ZDoom/GZDoom:

edit: the above two seem to play nice with Zandronum too:

5-map episode from Bryant Robinson (of Dark 7 fame). Originally made for Vavoom, but this version should work just fine with GZDoom https://www.mediafire.com/?gvg2oz936dqnih9
Maps consist of rusty, gloomy tech environs (starting with insides of a spaceship) sometimes mixed with barren outdoor areas. They're rather nice looking with lotsa hardware accelerated extravagance (including practically used 3D geometry) and are quite atmospheric, atmosphere being further enhanced with ambient sounds and choice Aubrey Hodges tunes. Gameplay-wise, this is pretty much another Dark 7 episode: small and medium-sized maps with straightforward layouts, easy difficulty (despite tight ammo balance here and there) and objective-driven gameplay.

What should I use to play Doom on Linux? Chocolate Doom, Freedoom with prboom+, Doom Legacy?

I'd recommend ZDoom for SP Doom (vanilla and the vast majority of user-made wads) and Doomseeker + properly configured Zandronum for MP.

I would still stick with Chocolate Doom if he is only interested in replaying original games. It still offers some "modern" benefits, but other than that it is the most authentic way to play original games. If he wants to delve into gameplay and visual mods and to have all recent SP wads available for playing, then he should indeed go for Zdoom.
