What the hell, why is nobody talking about this? There are already two episodes out. Very solid stuff with great potential. Never touched these books but series got me hooked already. Also, Lannister midget is one of the cooler characters in the while.

Us librarians should not acknowledge GD. So how is the show, I have not watched yet, waiting to accumulate a couple of ep's first to watch straight after each other.

I have seen Pillars o/t Earth, how does it compare (if at all).

"Pillars of the Earth" has nothing on it. Production is just as good or better, while characters and writing are A LOT better. It has all trademarks of a great HBO show. "Pillars" was just mediocre, and it went pretty derp in the second half. A waste of wonderful Ian McShane too, I want to see him brought to "Game Of Thrones".
Waiting for episodes to accumulate is a good idea, it's so much more fun to watch several episodes in a row. I wish I had patience for that.

    Also

Damn right you are. Fuck GD. Even reading thread titles there can get me pissed, so I usually avoid opening it.

Wondering how it can become more in depth politically wise without being pure exposition; not sure if it can live up to the series according to what you guys say about it but enjoying it as all hell so far.

One thing I don't like is how over the top the villains are. It's like, ok I get it it's the bad guy but they have to keep acting like bad dudes or be men shrieking like girls (the young Lannister prince, the exiled prince), it's annoying. Maybe the villains will improve as the series goes on.

characters change in the series. pussies become badasses, badasses become pussies, etc. characters may seem black and white but it switches a lot.

Looks like a good adaptation so far. A few details have been changed, but nothing huge.

Many characters are indeed fairly gray and most of them evolve, but certainly not all of them. Joffrey, for instance, will never be more than the insufferable, childish psychopath he's right now. And Catelyn will remain a dumb bitch.

That's because both of them are clearly insane. It may be not seen in the TV, but it was clearly portrayed in the books.

What does it say about a show when the best part is considered to be a midget slapping a kid?

First ep was was pretty boring, second was much better imo, despite claptraps like the above scene or the wolves.

She goes all mentor on her oldest son later, which was pretty unbelievable in the books as well I thought. Really odd role for what is supposed to be "merely" a mom and it was just annoying.

This is the thing with TV shows. You cannot expect significant character depth just from couple of episodes, it always takes much longer for them to evolve. Don't forget they have a huge cast to work with too. So of course in the very beginning you'll see just certain sides of characters.
Makes me remember how Al Swearengen seemed like a very evil guy to me in the beginning of Deadwood and by the end of it he was the guy I respected the most.

How is a mom being a mentor an odd thing?

Yeah this is so true, but Deadwood was very good at that, I do not really recall any other show that did it so well, maybe just The Wire.

Back on topic, sounds good from what I'm reading here, will be sure to pick up some episodes soon. Mayba will inspire me to read the book(s?) as well.

Show is a total joke. Can't say how it compares to the books because haven't read. But it's essentially, no who am I kidding, it is -- Rome -- with new characters.

Rome, a shitty show at that, was about Laurel and Hardy in the Roman legion and their unbelievable adventures, and fucking.

I haven't seen any adventures yet, but replace that word with political hokery. And fucking.

Also the effects have been praised as astounding, well somewhere probably someone used that word too. Rome actually had good set designs. A little too lavish sometimes but hey. This has by comparison badly made latex heads that people chop off, an idiot mixing the blood dye together and sub-par CGI. How is this astounding?

So any praise? Well, the acting is decent to good. But brunettes with bad blonde hair just isn't helping. Another HBO slamdunk. With gratutious sex, again. Yay. Fuck this.

I guess you would have preferred a quest fighting monsters that a band of heroes join up on?

Oh, and it's always amusing seeing people focusing on the sex and violence when it takes up about 5% of the total screen time.

It's because it's so unusual to see on TV or outside of porn which is its own self-contained medium so it comes as a shock to the system.

Mostly because I felt she seemed a bit too knowledgeable about how to make men loyal and whatever, and I think at some point she gives him tips on military strategy or something. It just felt weird, as if this was originally supposed to be a different character in that role but Martin didn't want to introduce yet another one.

People still getting offended these days when they see sex on television? Odd. Not to mention that the sex is self-implied by showing the HBO sig in the opening credits. It's not like someone could actually be surprised.

There's sex, and then there's sex done well on prime time television.

The Wire had good sex scenes. It even portrayed a lesbian character better than any other show before or since.

If you're going to stick in sex just to apparently show off tits, bush and ass in a purile fashion, don't bother. I'm not impressed. Apparently the HBO and GRRM fanboiz are.

Bullshit. Sex scenes are a part of the story and they told things about characters. Don't blame the show if you can't pay attention during the scene which features some tits and ass. I know it can be hard dude.
