Game like XCOM I missed

I checked some recent "game like" sites to find something like XCOM I missed. These sites are not good at listing games like XCOM. Not one recent one even listed Shock Tactics, which has been out for a while.

That new CIA/KGB one doesn't do it for me - XCOM was about combat, that game was about saving/reloading to collect data/items and about avoiding combat with some super-lite base building/chardev thrown in - which were, again, undermined by the core goal of the game being about avoiding combat.

Since Shock Tactics (and even most games like ET Gold, Xenonaughts, UFO -Aftershock, etc) wasn't listed there has to be more games like it over the years that are not listed that I missed.

I played all the Silent Storms and JA spin-offs, including Hammer & Sickle and JA Online.

I also played the xcom-like based off the show Fallen Skies.

I'm looking for something that may have slipped under my radar, that has chardev, and more shit to do besides just combat, combat, combat.

I can't remember the FPS XCOm that much (but do own it and according to steam played an hour or so) - did it have a geoscape mode with research, base building, etc?

Any help, recommendations would be greatly appreciated. FYI I can't get into games like HoMM, or games where your units are throw aways or the time in the game has generational characters.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
A few games that might fit the bill, depending on what you value in X-Com (did you mean the original, or Enemy Unknown?): Fallout Tactics, WH40k: Chaos Gate, Shadow Watch.
The only one I've played of those three is Tactics, which is a good game, but I've heard good things about the other two.

Thank you for the recommendations. I'm old so know the major games going back to forvere. I'm looking for some in the last 10 years or so that could have slipped under the radar and never get much attention - like Shock Tactics seems to have done for many.

You want games with 'something' besides combat (strategic level) but can't get into strategy games?

Try Master of Magic, Age of Wonders 1 and SM, they have strategic level and tactical. Tactical level is not x-com tier, of course, but p. good. Heroes and units have character progression and itemization in all these games and it's better then in 90% of so called RPGs. And while common units sometimes play a cannonfodder role, heroes are rarely 'thrown away', because they are expensive and hard to train.

If you just want more x-com, play X-PIRATEZ.

Have you tried Mordheim or the Suoer Mario Xcom? Oh, there’s also Templar Battleforce.

Since you mentioned some rtwp games (UFO), then maybe take a look at Doorkickers. IIRC it’s kinda like a top down version of the original Rainbow Six games.

Also, there’s like 5 or 6 xcom-like games currently in development.

There’s a wh40k one. Necromunda. Phoenix Point. Mutant Zero. And a few others I can’t recall.

EDIT: Oh, you might also enjoy Halfway and the Shadowrun games. Both have similar combat styles to xcom.

EDIT2: Also, take a look at 7,62 Hard Calibre on steam. Just be aware that steam has the original version and a modded version. Id recommend going with the original. One is called Hard Calibre and the other is called Hard
Life or something. Just google it.

Thanks for the recommendation - that reminds me since it is an openxcom mod, are there any of them that add more rpg elements to character building? The last time I checked a long while ago none of them did.

Its probably easier to think of what I like as a squad TBS with other shit to do besides combat.

Thanks for the recommendations - I've played everything you mentioned besides Mario Xcom - does it have decent chardev? More than the passive systems of old xcom, ET Gold, Xenonaughts, etc?

7,62 High Calibre comes with Hard Life in one package. It also have option to enable Blue Sun Mod in Propercies-->Beta tab, which is highly recommended.
Hard Life is hard but can be really tedious, you need to use all option available here, like exchanging cigaretes and porn for ammunition, read instrucion before you start maintaining your gun and have some nasty battles (you gang of 2-6 vs 40 bandits on the bridge, still remember it).

You can also get Marauder - Man of Prey for some scavenging.
Also have some intense battles (house defense, forest skirmish).

You need some skill to fight in outnumbered skirmishes.

Ahh yes. The Blue Sun thing. I remember Thor Kaufman recommending me the same thing last time we discussed 7,62. IIRC Blue Son can be enabled from High Calibre via steam options or something. Also, he found Hard Life to be a bit too spergy to be fun. I’ve read the same in other parts of the internets.

I tried playing 7,62 a couple years ago, but I was drunk and my brian couldn’t handle it.

Mustawd is spot on. I liked Blue Sun Mod a lot, only way I found Brigade Extreme Autism (Brigade E5 is the original engine for 7.62 High Calibre) enjoyable.
It even introduces the original JA2 mercs to hire, even though they just have the stats and no personality, unfortunately, but it's really nice to enhance the larp.

Anyone able to answer the question regarding openXcom and if any of the mods improve the character building/rpg element aspects of the game?

This is really crazy - this is the first time I've had time off and absolute jack shit to play. There has to be something.

From the PirateX wiki - I don't see anything about a non-passive chardev system or improved rpg aspects. Do you?
Hands:

  • Lead a band of female mutant pirate soldiers, now called "Hands".
  • All hands are mutants from the "Uber" strain; they are faster, stronger, smarter and more resilient than pureblood humans!
  • Melee plays a main part in the Battlescape; carve up enemies with cutlasses and chainsaws or take them hostage by stunning them with cattle prods or asphyxiating them with rope!
  • Psionics is now called "VooDoo"; takes a bit longer to unlock through research and requires specific armors in order to perform the VooDoo. Note: Hands won't be as powerful psionically as vanilla X-Com soldiers did!
  • Every stat plays a role, especially with the Combat Stress system.
  • Hands have a quickdraw slot, allowing for rapid access to small items like pistols, grenades, and alcohol.

You ask for a fuck of a lot, Roqua! Why the hell do you think we still replay Fallout Tactics to this day? Or UFO ET? Or UFO Aftershock? UFO Afterlight?

Because of masochism.

Aftershock - bad dramaturgy (aka progression doesn't feel right)
Afterlight - you don't hire soldiers. And well, they try too hard to be sequel, instead of completely independent story on mars.

Fuck you! Aftershock's a tactical combat with a strategy layer. Main story progression is just window dressing! Storyfags need not apply.

As for Afterlight, because it's a return to the RPG root. Instead of faceless cannon fodders you can hire and get thrown into the trench in suicide attacks, you have limited human resources, and characters with voice over and dialogs in strategy activities. Each AL characters have voice over in certain area, certain activities. All in all AL has more RPG feels than AS.

If Piratez is not of your liking, X-Files is algo good IMO.
