Back in the day I was pretty hyped about Freelancer as I was hoping for a new and improved Privateer. Then the game turned out to be a rather shallow one and I quickly lost interest. However it seems that modders have gone wild over it and nowadays there are a few seemingly high quality mods for it. The two that get mentioned most are crossfire and discovery and truth be told, they look stunning. What I wonder about however is if any add any real core gameplay aside from new weapons, systems and factions. The problem with freelancer was that it lacked a serious quantity of different kind of side-missions with the player only being able to do a few standard ones like escort, kill and patrol ones. Anyone know if any mod adds to these?

same thing for me when it comes to expecting privateer and only getting starlancer with privateer bits... didn't make me lose interest though. i liked it as an actiony space game with ship enhancement.

i did play a mod with babylon 5 ships that let you play through the main missions with those. flying a shadow ship or a white star against the nomads was fun (except for that one mission where you start from a carrier and the bab5 ships were too big and got stuck). iirc that mod had some trading missions, too (and a ship that looked like a fedex truck). don't remember the name of that mod, though. it's been a few years.

I remember when Freelancer came out - I wanted to like it, except for the fact that joystick control wasn't even an option.

What the fucking fuck was that about? It's a motherfucking space sim. Look, I understand wanting to make your game have a more 'mass appeal', so making the default control scheme mouse/keyboard - even optimizing the control scheme for mouse/keyboard - sure, what the fuck ever, knock yourself out. But making it so a joystick isn't even an option?! Fuck off and die. That's like releasing a racing game where steering wheel peripherals don't work.

I hated that the main plot barely took you anywhere and most of the other sectors were cutpasta with different backgrounds. It was like they just shoved it out the door half finished.

Huh? If anything Freelancer is the only space game with a proper space exploration out there. Non-main plot sectors (wormholes to which you really had to find) were anything but copy-pasta (not that main-plot sectors were similar)

Its strengths end right there though.

Well, sure seems like noone on the KKKodex spends much time playing elite-a-likes these days. Noone knows wether any freelancer mods have new side missions?

Hey Trash I don't know how it is since then but when (and sometime after) it came out there were no worthwile mods. Moddies were just adding some random sectors which weren't good and ships from various tv shows.

But nothing worthwile really.

Some mods have substantially improved the graphics in teh game, but when I tried to play Crossfire I had big trouble with the UI due to my widescreen monitor, so I can't say if the core gameplay has been improved upon too much.

I recently started playing and hated the main plot so much that I removed it with a mod.

http://www.filefront.com/3823984/Freelancer-OpenSP-Mod/

I though it would help since I didn't have to deal with the crappy linear story missions, it didn't. I wanted to start the game out by doing some mining but both the available junk fields are full of magically respawning enemies. No matter how many I kill they just keep coming with out so much as a small break in between. I pretty much though it was crap and rage quit.

Discovery at least is mostly about multiplayer - sure you can play open singleplayer too (campaign is not possible anymore since the ships have been altered so much it makes some of the missions just flat out impossible), but mostly it's the same in its core, just with new sectors/ships/commodities/what not. Making new missions and such are beyond the capabilities of mere mods afaik.

The multiplayer can be pretty nice tho, everyone has to choose a role and stick by the rules that they have (a mountable ID card you must have at all times when playing on the server); for instance if you aren't an unlawful type you can't just go attacking people at random, that'll get you banned.

Get Crossfire 1.82 or was it 1.9

You might as well just grab X3: Reunion or Terran Conflict and some mods.

I played through with crossfire about six months ago with whatever version that was current then. It's a very well done mod. If you leave the stock plot enabled, don't make the mistake I did and get tunnel vision following the plot.

The new ships/sectors are not all easy to find and If you focus too much on the plot you will have finished and or become bored with the game before you've seen 1% of the new content. Some antivirus software will flag crossfire as a virus, so you will have to manually make an exception for the offending files or turn your AV off. I played at 1920x1200 and it looks great, there was some tweaking that had to be done to get the widescreen to work, but I don't remember the details.

There was an exploit that totally broke the economy in the version that I played, but luckily it wasn't easy to find and if you did find it you could just use a little self discipline to avoid it as the exploit was only available at one particular location.

The
Earth
sectors sometimes caused crashes in the version I played, the workaround was to disable AA or something like that. There is a funny easter egg on one of the planets in those sectors.

Are the X3 games worthwhile? I've watched some videos and while shiny, the combat looks anemic and the world lifeless.

The combat depends on what you are flying , dogfights are not as good as in Freelancer .
The main difference between FL and X is that in the second the world is dynamic , bases do get destroyed and replaced and you can wipe out a race ; of course it is an empire building game .

I have only tried Crossfire. Didn't get far into it, because the way it spammed multiplayer specific messages all over singleplayer game made me ragequit.

Your ignore list.
Just in case anyone needs:

Widescreen Support
Code:
1) Go to my documents > my games > freelancer and open prefoptions in notepad. At the bottom it will say [Display] and underneath size= change it to 1680, 1050 or what ever widescreen
resolution you use. Note the space in between the 1680, 1050. Now save and exit.

2) Now go to c: > program files > microsoft games > freelancer > DATA . Once there open cameras in notepad

Delete whats there and paste the following.
Notes about FOV:
For 16:9 you can use 68.88 as the FOVX value.
For 16:10 you can use 63.50 as the FOVX value.

This will prevent the UI stretching over the top and bottom of the screen.

[WinCamera]
fovx = 63.504809977813375

[CockpitCamera]
fovx = 70
znear = 2.000000

[ChaseCamera]
fovx = 70

[DeathCamera]
fovx = 70

Now save and exit.

3) Now go c: > program files > microsoft games > freelancer > DATA > FONTS .Once there open fonts in to notepad. Now delete all whats there and paste the following.

[TrueType]
nickname = ButtonText
font = Agency FB

Now save and exit.

Now you are all done any ready to play in 1680x1050 ( best for either 20 or 22" wide). Note the options will state the wrong resolution but it will be in 1680x1050.

Also NOTE , for this to work when you load in to game you must enter in to space once for it to work is just lift off. Not sure why this is it just is.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
As most here said: No.

I've looked for ages myself, but it just doesn't seem to happen. Those who play it, play it almost exclusively multiplayer. The main problem was the very mod-unfriendly game, as far as I recall. It took them what? 6 years to make a ship go faster than "300" or whatever it was.

As far as I know, there is only one proper single player Freelancer mod. Fairly recent "Trent, the Monkey King". It adds a prequel, "before Freeport 7", as well as one mission after the official storyline. It is heavily buged, though. The author was to squash the bugs, and add much more stuff, both to a prequel and the sequel, the new version was supposed to be called "The Adventures of Trent". However, the last update was added at June 2010. So the project may be dead.

Then again, The Monkey King has come more or less out of the blue.

crossfire is a mod only for freelancer enthusiast, it's not something you want to try just to see how they improved the game, because they didn't improve anything.
also being a freelancer enthusiast means there's something wrong in your head.
do your math.

Play the X series. The combat is actually pretty damn good and in the latest game you can (if you choose) skip past the early trading stage with missions that give you a lot of freebies.

Play FE2 and FFE, unless you enjoy flying around medium-sized room painted in psychedelic colours in a blimp disguised as a spacecraft and LARP that you're in space.
