Nice try for a "pre-apocalyptic" 12 year old, but you're still not there. Make more shitty polls and posts and you may yet earn some Kodexxx Kewl points... Maybe even a custom tag ! (think Andhaira ;) )

My vote goes to that baulder's setting though, it's very inspired.

I like fantasy, mainly because most good games use this kind of setting. Also fantasy offers many interesting possibilities (mostly unused) and allows for a LOT of creativity. Fantasy 'canon' is simply very diverse, from heroic dragons and dungeons to racist witcher. And what can you do with modern/steampunk? Victorian airships are cool but could be overused (should we get some steampunk games that is). And modern is just that, modern setting, hardly interesting in most cases.

I don't give a fuck about what kind of a setting it is as long as it's done right.

My favorite vg settings have been completely original stuff that doesn't fall under any of the mentioned categories.
In my opinion, the best setting in any game I've played was probably Grim Fandango. It was well thought out with lots of detail, had a great artistic style to go with it, was filled with interesting characters, and felt completely original compared to everything else in the game market.

Standard Fantasy. I also like cyberpunk. That would be like Shadowrun, right? I loved that game. So epic.

Arcanum isn't steampunk. It's Fantasy with a slight touch of steam-era technology, and no punk at all.

It's slightly less possible than some dumbfuck thinking "favorite" means "only setting you like".

I voted Fantasy, though I actually prefer a more Conan-esque Sword & Sorcery type setting. You know, without the gay ass elves and shit.

Grim Fandango was such a great game partly because it was completely unique. Same goes with Planescape: even though it was fantasy D&D, the setting was so different from everything that's been done before in a computer game that it drew you into it.

I would really like to see more varied settings for RPGs, I tire of medieval fantasy worlds. Fallout introduced a rarely seen post-acocalpyse setting which brought with it a unique game experience, and I think there are plenty of opportunities left for RPG developers to be innovative when it comes to this. Even just using a non-medieval historical setting would bring with it all kinds of opportunities for developers. Can you imagine playing a Napoleanic era RPG where the player takes the role of a lieutenant in the British Army, on special assignment to raise support in Spain against the French occupation? Or playing in the World of Darkness, working amongst the shadows in the courts of the Italian city states during the renaissance? My point is that simply branching away from the tried and done is likely to raise the bar, there are just too many RPGs that all seem to do what everyone else has done, at least when it comes to setting. Some examples would be the Baldur's Gate series, M&B, Dragon Age, M&M, Elder Scrolls, Icewind Dale, NWN, et al.

A very good post Nick. M&B variates somewhat from the standard be being a non-magical world. And lore wise elder scrolls is one of the more interesting settings so much so I wish it were a PnP setting sometimes.

But other than that very good first post.

PA. But i'm tired of the same old desert PA setting. We need more snow, jungle,etc...

I like modern day and cyberpunk too.

I go back and forth between fantastical settings to post-apocalyptical up to "other" (à la Planescape). It depends on the month and the weather we're having up here. Right now, it's really cold - so I'm more into a fantastical setting. During hot weather, it tends to be more post-apoc, and during weather in between the two extremes, I prefer "other" settings.

The thing with PA games (the few out there) is that most of them set the story several years after the assploding takes place. I would like there to be a PA game that sets the timeline a few years after it all goes to shit, so you can experience the downfall and decaying of civilization first hand.
And I see no reason we can't have hybrids either. A Fantasy PA game would be awesome.

Why not have the game make you survive the apocalypse and then experience the downfall and decay of civilization if you happen to survive it?
