Oh shush you. Those were just minor side additions, characters, creatures and crazy stuff.
That just added a bit of fun and diversity that isnt taken seriously by anyone but some old farts.

I don't know. There was a lot of that stuff. Even the rest of the game has a very silly, self-aware and ironic tone to it. Combined with all the lulz it can kind of get overwhelming. Considering a huge strength of the first Fallout was its desolate atmosphere and great world-building and verisimilitude, seeing Fallout 2 go the opposite direction is frustrating to say the least - not that I don't like seeing more civilization and development, just that they really could have kept the tone serious rather than almost constantly goofy.

Both games have their own kind of shortcomings and good stuff.
    As we all know.

Most players base their preference on which game of the two they played first. (F2 for me)
But ive never seen any Fallout 2 fans arguing for even more of crazy stuff or loving the game exclusively for that.

It just that saying that the whole game is bad because of it is not really ... appreciated.
(- Yes, ive seen the first part of your post that lists some of the good parts too, just sayin`)

Oddly, I actually played Fallout 1 first, but prefer 2. On a sort of meta-level I'm aware of all the goofiness and 4th-wall-breaking in 2, but when actually playing the game I just don't care, and it's a blast. That said, I can understand why someone would prefer the original. It's more internally consistent and has (I would argue) better area design. I just enjoy playing 2 more. Oh well.

    FO1 = FO2.

Haven't played NV and barely tested 3 and Tactics.

The world is so simple to me.

This is pretty much another of those discussions that never reach a satisfying conclusion (like Thief vs. Thief 2). In some ways FO2 is a perfect sequel: it doesn't change the base of the game too much but takes a bit different approach to help keep things fresh, offers shit-tons of more content and variety, improves on the game mechanics, fixes some minor annoyances here and there and adds a bunch cool new stuff like giving you a bigger group and much more control over it. It brings enough new to the table so that it's not just "more of the same" in a new package, but in the process it also loses some of the things that made the first FO such a brilliant game. It definitely fucks up a lot of the world-building of FO1 and is a lot less consistent than its predecessor.

If I try to be objective about it, to me FO1 is the better game, but I'd be lying if I said I haven't spent more time and had more fun with FO2, even if that is partly because it's the bigger game. FO is a game where you step alone into a hostile world and try to stay alive long enough to fulfill the job that was assigned to you. FO2 is a game where you gather a bunch of bros and drive around the desert killing, eating and/or fucking everything that gets in your way until you're the king of the fucking wasteland. I can see how someone would prefer one over the other, but I really don't get how someone could not love both of those games.

Yeah the fixit mod. It incorporates some other exe hack mods (on of them allows you to increase the pathfinder distance whooooo).

    Slightly broken at present:
    1) if you try to accept the quest for assassinate krilian from gizmo with a weapon out, starting the conversation in stealth or using the keyboard numbers to select dialog options, the game crashes when the conversation ends (after you are expelled by the bodyguard).
The reason? I suspect the floating barks of the guards when you enter stealth or have a weapon out get activated in between a "conversation" when the body guard expels you and the normal game, and it double frees memory or something because the barks occur twice.
The part about "using the keyboard" is because pressing "1" ends up activating the stealth mod when the convo ends.
This is only a informed speculation from horrible C memories before i said "fuck this shit" and joined the church of java you understand.
    2) slot machines are broken
    3) heard there was a ghoul vendors broken
    4) Slight mod-ittis in a new npc in shady sands that supposedly rewards you with OP loot if you clear the radscorpion cave. But i couldn't get that to trigger, so maybe the reward is gone. Or maybe the script is broken, because i dynamited the cave.

I suppose now is a good time to ask as any.

Being a completionist, I have obsessively scoured to find every quest or find every outcome in Fallout. Some things still elude me.

That dog at the back of the Cathedral. What are supposed to do with it, or how are you supposed to reach it? In the three times I have finished Fallout, I have tried to find a path to it to no avail. Does it solve a quest?

It's not reachable. The dogs name is some in-dev joke, they named it after a person who worked for Interplay back in the day.

So I haven't played FO1... my first intro to the Fallout franchise was, as I am ashamed to admit, FO3. Back when I was a bethesda/bioware fangirl and thus an absolute moron. I picked up FO2 and loved it after reading about it here, which got me into isometric rpgs in the first place. I've played NV, liked it well enough, avoided Tactics like the plague, and it just hit me I never got around to playing the very first game.

With the Baldur's gate series I just couldn't get into playing BG1... But I've replayed BG2 over and over... So I wonder if I should even bother with FO1?

If I recall correctly one of our most beloved posters and gentleman moderator Jarlfrank first registered on the codex to ask the mean rpg people why they were so displeased with the Elder Scrolls: Oblivion

Given that you already know the basic mechanics of Fallout, having played the second game, you are in a perfect position to play it. You should be able to make the right build, put points in the right places, and know how and where to explore without metagaming. The game should be in your comfort zone.
