You can kill a certain important NPC with an overdose of stimpacks, but how the hell would you know that unless you had a walkthrough?
because you can kill yourself with an overdose of stimpacks. if you're paying attention throughout the game that kind of stuff comes naturally

Game mechanics are explained in manual. The good old way for getting informations about your game!

Is this about one of the bosses in the casino town? I think there was some kind of hint telling you that he was weak to drugs or something like that. There was hints for all the bosses IIRC.

About highlighting items, I remember that I could highlight items in Fallout 2. was not able to in FO1 but I am almost 100% sure that you were able to in Fallout 2. I only played it with mods so it might have been included in the mods.

I think I remember reading about the stimpack in the wiki but yea, the game is kinda old so there is nothing to do about it but if a new game was released and had some vital information that can only be learned in a manual or something than that's a bad design or whatever development section it belongs to. aside from some old school fanatics, no one really reads manuals anymore, I certainly don't.

Still an autistic thing to do yo, kinda like with Baldur's Gate. second time defending autism.

I don't think I killed the president, IIRC I conversed with him and left. might be wrong tho since it was pretty long time ago. Thanks.

I love the "Feel The Pain" crit, though, which simultaneously manages to be both understatedly snarky and sarcastically snarky, depending on whether the person feeling the pain is being critically hit for over 9000 damage, or 3 damage.
One time, I got "you were critically hit for 0 hit points. Feel the pain." I just facepalmed and laughed semi-hysterically.

I've been playing Fallout 2 up until the NCR and Vault 15, and I'm started to get real pissed off. This has to be one of the hardest RPGs in existence. I can't go toe to toe with generics raiders, mainly because I don't have any decent gear. Even basic guns and armor cost an arm and a leg (ergo. over 1000 caps), and I can't get caps because I can't defeat and loot enemies who carry goods worth bartering. It's a catch 22.

Sometimes I'll get a random encounter, and a bunch of supermutants will frag me with a laser gun from 2 screens away before I can even blink. It's like Baldur's Gate I, where your Level 2 party would get surrounded by wyverns or skeleton archers, and it was pretty much game over. I completed Fallout 1 years ago, and I don't remember it being near this level of difficulty. Hell, at least you started out with a gun, and could get a companion in the first area. It doesn't help that the graphics *suck*. You can't see what's a container unless you're right on top of it, and it's hard to differentiate generic people from important NPCs.

I'd take my time and level up slowly, gathering gear and going back and forth between towns to complete quests, but I'm a bit concerned about the time limit. I know the game has a hard limit of 13 years, but I must have received at least 3 warnings to get my ass in gear and find the GECK. All three ways to find Vault 13 require me to level up, which apparently I don't have the time to do.

So, what am I doing wrong? Do Codexers have any tips on how to get some decent gear?

Actually, I played with the newest Restoration Patch 1 year ago exactly and you could not be more wrong.

The game was fairly easy and I had it cranked up to the hardest difficulty setting.

Here's the cookbook build I used: http://thenakedpixel.blogspot.com/2013/06/best-fallout-2-character-build.html

I also avoided all random encounters while traveling in the wasteland.

Nope. When my dumbass party got killed in combat, I would reload. This happened quite a lot during random encounters in the wasteland.
It doesn't work or you didn't turn that feature on? If it's the latter can you do me a favour and try it?

For anyone who played with sneak. I have a value of 101% and it seems like critters and humans don't see you if you are 5-8 hexes away. The guys in Vault 15 come flooding from every room regardless of who you kill. Are they just hardcoded to not give a shit about sneak, is it that sneak doesn't work inside structures, or do I need a higher sneak value to cheese them?

Smell like troll, sure enough. Completing F1 once meaning player got some level of expertise, at least in F1-F2 series. No way in hell such one will fail to do the basic quests of F2.
Further more, to survive wandering down to SM area, and 3 dreams, that mean playing is good. he can only get that bad as he describe with very much effort to misplay his experiences.

To illustrate: There's a pipe rifle in Vic's shack in Klamath, which is easy and logical to search and loot. The pistol in rat tunnel I suppose we can say it's too hard to see. The church raid quest in Den require nothing more than show up and cower in a corner, and loot the fallen for guns and ammo. Do the quest for Modoc should net you an automatic rifle, and require nothing more than some running around, and some thinking. Also, another quest net you a leather jacket, which is better than leather armor....

One quick way to get cash is to murder one of the shopkeepers in the Den. Another way is exploring Klamath and levelling up. You're going to find a companion in Klamath and in Den.
Generally, these two towns are here for early levelling up and gathering gear.

General rule is to travel with caravans. You get both cash and some protection then. Also, you can get all the loot from dead enemies/friendlies. If you talk with enough people in either Klamath or Den (I don't remember which), you'll get location of Redding which is one of the caravan hubs.

But yeah, Fallout 2 is kinda a munchkin game in comparison to Fallout 1. Lots of high-levelled enemies with heavy weapons.
Where do these super mutants get their ammo? The Military Base is destroyed after all.

"Tim Cain: My idea is explore more of the world and more of the ethics of a postnuclear world, not to make a better plasma gun."

It doesn't help that the graphics *suck*. You can't see what's a container unless you're right on top of it, and it's hard to differentiate generic people from important NPCs.
Generally, important NPCs can be recognized by:
1. Descriptions.
2. Location.

I'd take my time and level up slowly, gathering gear and going back and forth between towns to complete quests, but I'm a bit concerned about the time limit. Well, Fallout 2 really failed with that stuff. Lacks the consistency of Fallout 1. The warnings don't have any real effects, you have all the 13 years to finish the game and you're expected to take your time.

After 11 months, I think it's safe to stop giving tips/spoilers to the_shadow. He's hopefully over it by now.

lol, Fallout 2 is teh hard

Sure, you don't start with a gun, which is bullshit if you're making a gunslinger. IIRC, there's two guns in Klamath, the pipe rifle and a handgun down in the tunnels. Doing quests in Klamath should set you up with enough cash to buy a shotgun or something once you get to the Den.

But yeah, early game and late game difference in difficulty is staggering. You're basically invincible for the second half of the game. Just aim for the eyes and see people explode.

The OPs main mark on this board is whining about every game he plays whipping his ass from Fallout 2 to Dragon Age Origins

It better be a troll or it's something far worse and far sadder than trolling going on.

Not as funny when you get critically hit for 0 hit points and die.

Early F2 is tedious as fuck though. Punching geckos for like forever. Unless you metagame your way to cool gear immediately.

I just went back to the geckos later after I had acquired decent guns. :M

Definitely not in Klamath if you play patched version.
I just fired F2 and was very surprised that Maida in Klamath put Redding on my map, there was no yellow keycard around vertibird and Electronic Lockpick Mk2 does not work in Toxic Caves (I visited San-Fran because needed to prove my friend wrong. Fucking rumours.) Then I saw that I forgot, again, to patch from 1.0 to 1.2. :M
Installed Killap's patch for the first time and started game again.

'Tis true, you can also punch molerats and scorpions.
You can't totally avoid punching molerats in Fallout 2!!!
EDIT:
Aha! Tubby from Den can put Redding on your map if you pay him $100.
