Yeah, I remember talking to some caped guy in the faux city near the base and not being able to convince him to let me in so I violently bashed his skull in but I think he yelled or something =/

You could still sneak in even after killing the caped guy IIRC if you wear an Enclave armor and as long as you are alone I think. You can buy the armor from San Francisco and you can ask your companions to wait near the gas station or in San Francisco. Armor costs a fortune but you get a lot of money from selling the weapons you get from encounters and its worth it for the protection alone.

I think I have an enclave armor or something. But maybe I stole it from the base? I had already killed everyone in the basement. I have become really bored with the game, in no small part because of the combat. I think I'll start again after some time, this time with small arms and energy weapons or something.

Probably, There was an enclave armor in one of the lockers you could get if you tried getting in as a recruit.

You could exit and comeback later, maybe go grind and set your companions with Enclave/BoS armor for better protection and the 10 Strength so they can carry more loots to sell and better weapons from San Fran.

The "enemies slide for two hours" effect is caused by the super sledgehammer. It's good in enclosed spaces and against melee enemies because it forces them to waste AP running back at you, but pretty counter-productive otherwise. Try another weapon, and aim for the eyes/groin.

You're near the end of the game anyway, might as well finish it.

There is no reason to take anyone with you to the base. Get the Enclave armor, go talk to the mechanic, etc. You shouldn't be fighting at all on that base, you will get your ever loving ass kicked.

Most of your companions are pretty useless by the time you reach endgame anyways, even the ones you give power armour to. They become pack-mules at best and plasma rifle fodder at worst.

I can go back to some games after a long break, like Morrowind, because I know the game so well and remember everything easily.

Most games I start over though. I don't even have a backed up saves file on my computer because 95% of the time I'd start over anyway.

Game balance is effed up at the end anyway. I personally disliked F2 a lot due to the amount of stupid combat in there.

I agree with the title of this thread.

IIRC I fucked up my character build and was getting destroyed in combat for the majority of the game and I gave up after I got to NCR. I should probably restart it one of these days but fuck Temple of Trials.

How do you mess up a Fallout character after playing Fallout 1?

You should probably be able to grind some shit to pump your skill points anyways.

People too shit at video games to beat Fallout 2 should just use Per Jorner's walkthrough.

Also, Temple of Trials takes about 15 minutes even if you decide to kill everything and don't just run through.

The oil tanker full of aliens mutants: wanamingoes and floaters was stupid pointless combat. I remember absolutely hating that part of the game.

I think you could one shot almost anything with a high small gun and a Gauss rifle. Its pretty hard to find but really worth it.

Had to circle NCR, Reno and San Fran until I found one and for enough ammo for it, by that point had enough cash for a powered armor from selling the loor. I think if you use the restoration mod you could spare Kaga until the end to get his gear later since you get pretty nice loot at the end from him.

The gauss pistol is better - smaller range, but it costs 1 less AP to fire and you'll hardly ever notice the range penalty as long as your small guns skill is decently high. Then Mutate! something to fast shot at 21 (or save your perk until 23), pick up Sniper at 24, and with a luck of 8 or 9 you'll be one shotting pretty much everything for 2 AP per shot. For added fun get Action Boy twice and take Jet for 14 AP.

How do you "fuck up" your character in Fallout 2? Going full diplomat stats-wise but picking combat perks? Relatively decent combat skill + relatively decent weapon + aim for the eyes = YOU'RE WINNER

By that point you're so overpowered that only gimmicky builds will have a hard time anyway.

Eh, gauss is overhyped and small guns relatively suck in the late game - with fast shot/sniper combo big guns or energy weapons are much more efficient. Bozar or avenger minigun (vindicator is a pipe dream since you'll never have enough ammo for it) deal many times more damage than either 2x gauss pistol shots or 1 aimed gauss rifle shot, and alien blaster is the strongest weapon of the game and is worth all the headache you need to spend while acquiring it. And, of course, there's always the flamer & rocket launcher combo, my personal favourites.

I don't think I ever got the Alien Blaster in F2 but in F1 IIRC it required special ammo that you get from the crash site.

Small gun is pretty great from start to finish with the Gauss, I spend any extra points to other skills. If I go with Big Guns or energy, I'll gimp[?] my character for the early parts and gets kinda boring or waste points to level then beside small guns.
