And in the Developer Diary the project lead tells us some nice fluff about the map showing seasons and other graphical fluff and then explains how historical provincial borders have gone the way of the Dodo. Evolution or decline?

If you read the entire diary, it all makes perfect sense.

It's not like Paradox go full blowhard for eye candy anyway, but you do need to do a minimum level of catering so it's not a pain to sift throug hthings or to stare at the map.

Of course, I'm mainly concerned about how the political mode looks, since yeah, that's the only way to play.

I don't really get the urge to make paradox games pretty. I'm always zoomed out as far as I reasonably can be, to get the best strategic overview of the game. Fancy 3D stuff is rarely visible. In EU3 I'm usually so far zoomed out that the units turn into little flag icons. This mode is actually pretty poor in usability however, as there isn't an at a glance indicator of how many units are in each stack.

It's all about marketing, without pretty screenshots far too many people will write your game off as crap without proper consideration.

A lot of those people who write off games without pretty screenshots aren't the ones to look up news for kick-ass grand strategy games, they're the ones who wait for popamole console games.

EUI/II looked great, vanilla EUIII had satans spunk for visuals, terrible, absolutely terrible.
