Never heard of “Roadside Picnic“. Googling it the novel sounds interesting. Have to keep that in my mind.

It's essentially the setting for Stalker games. The book, and the movie however are mostly, well, psychological so don't expect typical guns blazing post apocalypse.

and their only good game was bloodlines [dotdotdot]

TOEE had a good combat system so that makes 1.5 of 3 games good in my book. How many studios can boast a 50% incline rate anyways?

has there ever been a good game made by "ex-[studio]" devs

There is one most glorious and unknown game by ex civilization devs:

Sadly, they're out of business, so we'll never know how their Firefly 'RPG' would have penned out.:shittydog:

it's pretty much comical when they write stuff like "ex-studio dev" because pretty much every single developers on earth worked for at least 2-3 studio and will change 3-4 times before they will stop working.

Well every one of them also had to start somewhere, and the whole exing is meant to point out they're not virgins, so they're supposed to have a higher chance of success.

Hmm, I don't know. It's not a lot to go by, but: On the one hand, it looks pretty generic: nuclear war, desert (again), factions war; these artworks also look 'all right', but so far nothing really original.
On the other hand
The game will feature a turn-based combat. All mechanics are designed to give players a large number of tactical choices (...)
so I'm cautiously interested.

But have you never heard of Stalker too? Either the games or the movie?

I've heard that the Stalker games are based on some book/ book series but I thought the book would be called stalker as well. And I never played a Stalker game.

The artworks are pure porn ... but the screenshots are really weak (not to say something worse).

CadmusLabs Please take your time and next time show something more consistent than some artworks. The project has potential.

Oh yeah, Ape guys. Yes, this is a concept for the quest arc we are planning. The game setting is not atomic post-apocalypse anyway. Well not exactly. Nukes are involved but are not the central theme of what is going on.

And there definitely will not be any "Cuban Missile Crisis did not end well and now it is wasteland" sort of thing.

Posted on двач already.

Can I get the link, privately (looks like I can't use DMs here yet), I'm curious how the discussion there looks like.

Stalker by tarkovsky man, one of the best movies ever!!!

Yes, and from one of the best movie maker ever.

Such candor is rare enough that I appreciate it. Many people would have said, after a quick wiki search : "oh, that book, of course, great!"

Actually, I love Tarkovski's adaptation, but have never read the book myself. In fact, I have zero knowledge in russian SF litterature, even though I heard they have a respectable SF tradition.
The only time my curiosity wandered to the East, it got captured by Stanislas Lem's works.

Guess this is a good place to ask if Roadside Picnic is good and if there are other enjoyable russian SF books.

Of course it's good. The only thing it's have little in common with the film, so... don't expect anything.
Actually, Russian science fiction is known for its social focus (?) - it's mostly about future societies and its improvements or problems.
If you will find Russin science fiction in English - then most likely its worth to read.

You can ask me if something is worth to read, it's hard to remember it all.

Also, you can start from this... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kir_Bulychev
oh, memories...
