The 'problem' (ie: not a real problem) with mame roms is that mame is ongoing project focused on a hardware accuracy and that large parts of the software arcade cabinets run is actually inbuilt on the hardware. This means, that very often, discoveries are made on how a piece of hardware should function, which means new pieces of rom code have to be dumped, or that some roms were unproperly dumped, which means large sections your romset just got invalidated doozd and are probably blacklisted on recent mame.

Just as a absurd example of this hardware/software confusion, some early arcades used cassette tapes as game 'music/sound-effects', operated by the hardware;

Exactly, that's why I haven't updated MAME for a looong time. Are there any new games supported lately that warrant an update ?

And roms are piracy since when?

:rpgcodex:

Of course I know they are, but still...
Do you really think anybody cares about some 1984 arcade stuff?
You (the mods, not you - SB) are taking the moderation a litte bit to seriously recently...
"Guyze, don't forget that we have some RULES!" Sure, whatever.

Edited in fear of Bruticis' case.

no, but somebody is bound to take issue with that nds, psp, andoird and iphone shiznt you linked to. plus i feel like a hypocrite for telling somebody who made a shitty piracy joke to watch it while tolerating worse stuff in my jrpgd...

dood, did you miss the entire police visit debacle? granted, that wasn't about piracy, but still.

For better or for worse, we do have rules and we do take them seriously.

(Roms are... tolerated, though, as long as this stuff is discreet enough.)

It's better to avoid direct links, turning the simple mention of ROMs/isos/abandonware/etc into taboo a là Gamefaqs would be silly since the Codex is mainly about old games which often aren't available otherwise, but any actual presence of warez is enough to cause trouble if someone is butthurt enough. Everyone here knows how to use search engines, anyway.

On that note, recently FantasyAnime introduced a nifty "Museum" section with mini-reviews of popular non-rpg console games, I wanted to link it here but it also has links to the roms. So, if anyone's interested it's pretty easy to find on your own.

4.1. Stalker-ish Behaviour: Behaviour which we're broadly defining as anything remotely involving tracking down someone's location such as city, town, street address, phone number - or harassing them on other sites such as Facebook or YouTube, especially suggesting doing things to them that would or could be considered criminal. There has been A Real Instance™, police were involved and the Administrators do not appreciate real police rocking up at their real doorsteps to ask about bullshit that happened on an internet forum. It's all fun and games until someone has to go to a Police station to try and explain the Codex. Strangely enough, it has nothing to do with any of the more recent well known stalkery threads and was one that caught us by surprise, go figure. As such, any instances of stalkerish behaviour may result in an entire nuking of the accounts involved and deletion of relevant threads - even if it's just a bad joke. As always, we're much more inclined to nuke if you're just a shit-poster.

"Well, you see officer, it's hard to put into words. Let me borrow this pencil, I'll explain with a drawing."

Can you into action? Because Black is greatest gunfight porn. And Getaway despite some popamole features.
Also - Wizardry: Tales of Forsaken Lands and King's Field 4 (actually - any From Software games that's not with mechs like Tower serie), Primal, Second Sight and God Hand.

DDS1 is pretty mediocre, but DDS2 on Hard was actually decent enough. Unfortunately, to play DDS2 on Hard (from the start) one needs a clear save from DDS1. That keeps me from recommending it without strong reservations.

Wizardry Tales of the Forsaken Lands

Excellent game and an interesting "modernization" of a classic-style Wizardry title. Allied Actions and the dungeon design are probably the standout gameplay features, but the way the devs were extremely clever in making a first-person blobber look good deserves a lot of applause as well.

BTW how's PS2 Shinobi, anyone? Haven't tried it yet.

I like it a lot, but the game is certainly an acquired taste. Hotsuma, the player character, lacks a bevy of moves (he's no Dante for certain, but even guys like Maximo have him beat in quantity) and the visual style of levels is rather plain but the game makes up for it in under-the-hood mechanics.

The gameplay revolves around traversing levels quickly and killing enemies in sequence. Shinobi's protagonist wields a cursed blade (Akujiki) that both eats away at his health (after chomping up a reserve of Yin) and gains power with each enemy defeated in chain. As a consequence of these mechanics, level design is tight as can be; there's no filler and everything is well thought out. Levels may be plain in architecture, but it's quite clear a lot of thought went into enemy placement and how the structure of the levels play into encounters; it's platformer roots show through often.

The game also has an interesting gimmick in that every enemy, including bosses, can be felled with one hit. In most encounters this encourages a scheme of killing the "small" enemies to build charge in Akujiki so as to one-shot a bigger foe; this even applies to bosses.
It's certainly worth a try if it won't cost you much ( :M ),
