I think there is a local merchant in one of the provinces with a Hydra egg, and at this time there are two heroes alternating attacks on an adjacent province (i.e. I send one away the other moves in, repeat indefinitely). But my Scout only has tier 2 unit slots available, what level would a Scout need to be to have a tier 3 unit in their army ?
You need a building to hatch hydra egg. Sufficient income to afford upkeep. And of course someone who can have T4 slot in army. (BTW Rangers can't have T4 slot in the army.)

back to the drawing board then, I wanted to learn the other leaders before focusing on the Commander but the appeal of the game is also largely about including some of these higher level unit types. Not so much a Hydra except to resolve the stalemate of the two leaders alternating attacks along the same boundary without investing in another leader and army myself. Having used the Wizard and Scout for a while now I'm curious if the Commander's army bonuses compare to the sheer power and versatility of other leader types. Even so I really need my Gryphon armies and will try to specialise in Diplomacy early

Randomly finding a good level 4 scroll with a wizard is just silly. Could of terror, fight over on turn 1.

those two leaders on my border were but a scouting party, I encountered approximately 15 leaders and armies in about 25 turns. This is from the remaining lord on the shard, I really don't know where that many are coming from, and the inquisition keeps materialising inside my territories. There is something to be said for wanting to keep hero-guards in strategic places, since they are fairly reliable at keeping territories even when the invasions begin, or if they happen to lose the invading army isn't ready for a counter invasion

almost lost my Dwarf in the aforesaid battles, having a single point of health left, but he managed to nullify all physical damage from two successive attacks

If there's just one enemy lord remaining then you're fighting his heroes over and over again, and if they're coming back so fast he can't be far away, check out where they're coming from, move in that direction and take his capital. If it was a different master and there were more than 2 players on the map you could try diplomacy but as it is they won't stop coming unless your province guards are strong enough to stop them or you go on the offensive. Alternatively you could park your best hero at a chokepoint (if there's one), they won't attack into him if you're stronger than them, but if you're strong enough for their best hero you're probably ready to go on the offensive.

yes I'm trying to move into controlled areas and gain enough control with guards in place to not have to repeatedly retreat, whilst also keeping resources and a workable army intact, this process has been fluctuating over numerous turns but after losing their main leaders and then sending in the rest the overall momentum appears to be slowing down. Likewise I am trying to ensure I don't get caught overextended lose newly gained territory and then find myself without the resources to keep up with another concentrated series of battles. Which is foreseeable if I lose the main army with both gobbies and the inquisition causing mayhem in territories not accessible by land. For those reasons I'm hoping another useful mercenary appears to help with the provinces just ahead. I lost my ballista which was of mixed utility but have a levelled Guardsman and Dwarf who can both hold the line against multiple enemies whilst my Archer steadily takes out main enemies (Warriors for one)

firstly I was facing a 2v1 in their provinces, which means having to beat the guards before facing an army, which would shortly be followed by the second army, once that was finally decided I encountered the other 12 leaders.. I am now preparing for a new focus on the provinces so that I can hold these areas without losing them to multiple armies again. After which, yes, I would like to try and finish this shard and hereafter specialise with a Commander

Can I somehow switch to the main menu theme from the Russian version though? I like that one better.

Edit: I've also noticed the "animations" are missing in the English version, they show if you copy the Eador.cfg from the Russian version though. It will probably work if you paste "Animation (0 - off/1 - on, default 1): 1" somewhere into the Eador.cfg too.

Good job. It's a huge amount of text to translate and I've noticed few errors.
To be honest, I'm standing on the shoulders of giants ;-)
The original Genesis translation was high quality, and Drakon's NH translation was very good as well.
Then Satshanti taught me how to use OmegaT.
Could you point out the errors you did notice? I'd like to fix them for the next release.

I wouldn't say I speak Russian, but I can understand it more or less given enough time to read, I could have a look. I'll try translating one and report later if I have time but it might not be until Friday. How do I extract the game files for copying text and editing?
Unit descriptions are located in Text/unit.txt
Russian text is encoded in Windows-1251 codepage.
I'll post an example, that should be much easier for everyone interested.

The Russian version has Windows line endings (CRLF).
The English version has Unix line endings (LF).
I bet you're using Notepad? Try Wordpad or LibreOffice instead.

That will be tough. I'm currently near the end of a game I've been chipping away at for months, and my NH version is quite out of date. Like as not I'd be giving you out-of-date mistakes.

If I start a new game with the new version, I'll keep a log.

You're right about the original translation. It's good. Most russian games I've played have amusingly poor translations. Sometimes that's part of their charm.

AI is quite obviously cheating on resources. By a lot, as you can see when they can afford to resurrect their high level heroes all the time, can afford good pd in every province and so on.
