Honestly, I am not liking the artistic direction of this D3. It's too pants. D1 (and D2, in part) were gritty, grimdark and conveyed uneasiness and anguish (so to speak, I mean, they're still videogames). This one is too colourful and merry, it doesn't seem to belong to the series.

Torchlight was a pleasant surprise and although not being as grimdark as the original Diablo, it felt like it (maybe because it's basically been made mostly by the same people who did that one...).

I played both DS1 and DS2, but always quit halfway through them. They were too shallow and repetitive. Despite my skepticism when it comes to Obsidian (not to mention Square Enix), I am actually looking forward to trying this one.

Actually, 3 AAA H&S games in a single year is too much. Bad marketing strategy. They should have released them in 3 different years (or, with 6-months gaps between each other), instead of competitively tearing the customer pool apart. Mhm mhm.

D3 have Boyarski who is pretty good when it come to setting and story. So i'm not sure DS3 shine even in this area.

Did Boyarski ever work on setting and story though?

Or is it just because he worked at troika so he has to be?

@Jaesun He is Lead World Builder. And no that isn't in the writing sense but the artistic one.

For what i've understood, he is the main brain behind the story and setting of fallout and arcanum.

I don't, but I know Boyarsky was responsible for a lot of the look of FO; the art deco influences, 50's miscellanea and so on, vault dweller appearance etc. And like it or not, that has as much to do with the feel of the game as 20 lines of sarcastic text.

Boyarski is a great artist with a fantastic ability to put together a unique art style that fits perfectly within a setting, but regardless of the extent of his involvement, I am really not feeling the art style in Diablo III. It looks good, but too cartoony IMO.

I really loved the gothic look of Diablo I, it had this kinda satanic feel to it that was perfect. Wish it did something more along those lines.

He's one of the best CRPG designers imo, he's done a lot more than just art direction.

He was also the one who wrote Fallout's classic ending, it was his idea that the Vault Dweller get exiled at the end.

Actually I'm pretty sure that DS3 was already in development when Aliens got cancelled.

What makes you say that? It was canceled in February which was right around the time they started working on DS3. Jean-Eric Khalife says here that most of the team from Aliens went to DS3 and the rest went to NV and Feargus says something similar here.

Well when Alpha Protocol and Aliens RPG were the only games announced that were currently being developed, they had a third unannounced game (that wasn't New Vegas). Since DS3 is the only one announced since I'm assuming that it's the one.
