Dude compiles data: Median indie Steam game makes $341.

Yeah, and a random sampling of the low games suggests that they also give Steam cards.

This simply adds to my despair about the state of the world.

I know that there used to be a scam that worked. A dev would make a crappy game that had trading cards. He would give 10,000 free copies to his bot army, which would load the game and start collecting trading cards. The dev would then sell the trading cards. From what I understand, when you collect a complete set of trading cards, you get more points, and your level goes up. I have no idea why people want points or higher levels, but they want it enough to pay actual money for virtual trading cards.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Trading cards are cool, when a game has trading cards that means I can sell them and get back some of the money I paid for the game. In case of humble bundle packages where I get 4 games for 1 dollar, which is around 80 European cents, I can get back almost 20% of what I paid by selling those silly, useless cards! Hah!

I love trading cards! Sold every single one I collected over the last 2 years recently and earned more than 8 euros that way.

Aye hold up

So you're telling me, you're saying,

That my indie game won't make me filthy rich?

*deletes gamemaker studio*

Probably not but you can make a living if you:

a) Don't make a shit game
b) Keep the scope realistic.

The former is obvious but the latter isn't. Having several people working on an extremely cheap/niche game, no matter how great it is, is unlikely to get you anywhere. If you're working with several people one of you better have damn good project management skills.

It's not enough to make a mediocre game with a realistic scope these days. These days to be successful you have to find a niche in the gaming market that nobody else is filling, for example Stardew Valley.

Well I definitely have a niche. Religious veneration of classical texts = highest quality gaming
