BECAUSE EMPIRES ARE ALSO GREAT AT DEMOCRACY

Western monarchies were tend to follow the rule of law. Hohenzollern dynasty was quite enlightened and allowed a lot of civil liberties for citizens.

Constitutional monarchy was a concession to the fact that people could get fed up and go all Louis XVI on their kangz any day. Well, not really in the case of Germans, they only revolt in case of beer shortage.

Im from Poland and i kind of agree. Would be better if we stayed as a part of german empire :P Right now, we again lean to the eastern civilization...
So, germanized like the Czechs, you mean?

A lot, if not all, of the Eastern Bloc would've benefited greatly had they been absorbed by a Western country, but that's neither here nor there. Anyway, I didn't take a picture of it, but there's a poster going around my academy of a concert with video game music in which D:OS2 will be present, along with the physical presence of Borislav Slavov, along with Elitsa Alexandrova (composer of Asscreed: Origins) and Penka Kouneva (composer of Prince of Persia). Being in the musical sphere myself, I might be able to talk to him if he comes to the academy for a seminar or something. If that's the case, does anyone have any questions I could ask? Keep in mind that it's not a 100% sure thing.
Lacrymas did you learn already who did the actual orchestration of the D:OS2 soundtrack?

What do you mean? Is there uncertainty whether Slavov himself did it? I somehow doubt that he scored it for piano first and then gave it to someone else to orchestrate it. The orchestration itself is pretty bad and barren from an academic pov.

Here's the poster btw:

Pretty shit design I might add.

There hasn't been any uncertainty. I have known since before the game was released :)

Wasn't this guy a director of Bulgaria's Philharmonic Orchestra? You are known for having high standards, but calling his orchestration barren and whatever else it was, really cracked me up back when the game was releasing :D

What? No, lol. He doesn't have any musical education, let alone being a director of the Philharmonic Orchestra.

EDIT: Oh, you mean Viktor Stoyanov? If it is the same person, not everyone is a great orchestrator and the music he was given doesn't lend itself to much orchestral texturing. Not only that, but he probably phoned it in, why would the director of the Philharmonic Orchestra painstakingly orchestrate some vidya gaem music? Besides, he has a Bachelor's in "music technologies", i.e. nowhere near a composer. AND usually the minimal amount of work video game and film composers put into whatever is also a factor. They don't meticulously craft anything, why would they? As you can see, Slavov's music was mainly praised, only derided by those with good taste, so there's no need to do anything more. You can very easily compare the treatment of the orchestra between a great composer and a composer of films/video games by just listening to a single movement of a symphony by any famous "classical" composer.

That should be enough to get my point across, but there's also the fact that I don't know what they mean by "orchestrator" in this context, it might mean anything. It might mean mastering or some other kind of technical work, or even supervising that technical work. He certainly didn't sit down to write musical notes.

Well, he stopped being director of the Philcharmonic Orchestra a couple of years ago. It had been a temporary duty. So his work on D:OS2 didn't coincide with his term there.

It sure is the same person :) I know because he is a friend of a friend.

They had dropped out of contact for three months while Victor was working on the D:OS2 music. Bobby and Victor are practically neighbours and of course know each other. Although Bobby is credited as composer, he has been mostly a manager, and cooridnator of the overall style of the music. He would provide Victor with a motive, for example for a flute, and Victor would turn this into a theme for the whole orchestra, write the notes for each instrument, so that the orchestra could record it.

Bobby has been a manager and "musical director" of the project. He found the musicians, arrangers, composers. The whole of D:OS2's score however has been arranged by Victor, not by Bobby personally. Bobby has of course approved every piece before it was recorded. But Bobby has had nothing to do with the actual orchestration.

By the way, I don't know where you are getting that from, that Victor is not schooled, as he has been a composer for about 30 years, with a number of albums and soundtracks to his name :)

That doesn't surprise me, it's usually how it goes with these things and that practice is obviously looked down on by academics. I meant Bobby doesn't have formal music education, not Stoyanov, at least I can't find any info saying otherwise.

It doesn't surprise you that you shat on the wrong guy and missed by a mile in determining his qualifications and ability? Because that's what happened.

Stoyanov has studied in the Sofia musical school and later "Digital Technology in Composing" in a pedagogical faculty. Then went on being a composer - not academic - for like 30 years.

I didn't underestimate his ability, I know exactly what he is capable of, just the object of my derision happened to be someone else. I also didn't miss his qualifications, he isn't a composer in the sense that he graduated a conservatory with that specialization. I know you are trying to defend your friend or whatever, but that doesn't make him a great orchestrator or composer, especially from an academic pov. Even if he's great at both, he isn't showing it in this soundtrack.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, your defense of him makes the situation worse. Even though I know the musical school in Sofia doesn't train composers and "Digital Technologies in Music/Composing" being the academic joke that it is, let's assume he has the necessary training that I can't detect. That means he either didn't learn anything, had bad teachers or willfully ignores whatever he was taught because untrained or naive people lap it up regardless, and that culminates in coming off as bad to a classically trained composer. I can ask my piano professor to bring me the scores, since she's the primary "practice helper" for the orchestra and we can academically analyze the score if I wanted to, but the results won't be good since you can easily hear what the problems are.

I don't know the guy, so not trying to defend him. I liked the music, as in I took pleasure in listening to it. You said it sucks and justified your opinion with some strange "academic" air which you think gives you authority to pass judgement on what is good art what isn't. The thing is that when you start questioning people who are established in their field, I start questioning you. Simply because going for such terms as "pretty bad and barren from a technical standpoint" isn't what someone who really knows his stuff does.

As is eviden't you didn't even know whose music or arrangement you are pronounicng to be bad. The funny thing is that if you had known your attitude would have been different. Your perception of the material was affected by your low opinion of whom you thought was the author.

I think you have some personal jelaousy or prejudice towards Bobby Slavov, which blindly pushed you to pronounce an established composer, former director of the Philharmony (and btw deputy minister of culture)'s music to be bad. But that's just me.

Maybe I am jealous of him, maybe I'm not, that's my problem. Would I have liked to be the composer instead of someone else? Yes, obviously, I stated as much when they announced that Bobby was. Anyway, I was very careful to explicitly state a lot of times that my pov is an academic one and my opinion in that context is that it's not a good orchestration. My opinion of the music itself is that's generic, if functional, and can't hold a candle to Kirill's. No, my opinion wouldn't have been different had I known it was Stoyanov, it would've been worse actually. I was mostly excusing Bobby because I know he doesn't have any musical training, my issue was people pronouncing that he's as good, or even better than Kirill, which gets my panties in a twist.

I have composed for film before and have been in masterclasses devoted to such, I also know what they teach at "Digital Technologies in Composing" in my own academy (where I assume Stoyanov went for that, but if it's not it's at NBU, which is practically the same curriculum and teachers) and even academies in other countries, as I was able to meet a lot of people in that sphere when I went to the masterclasses in France, so I know what that entails.

I remain indifferent to the "ooh, the academia says so!" attitude. I know it very well, and that's the same atittude as that of a shaman who aims to assert his authority by insisting he is the only one who can "speak to the Spirits".

Since next to everything in humanities is debatable and debated, the teacher needs this tactic to suppress attempts at argument, so he can finish his lecture in peace. I guess this attitude was practiced on you and made an impression on you long before you began practicing it on others, but it doesn't really work outside the sacred walls of the monastery, as I have found out from personal experience. :)

No, I don't think the academic perspective is the One True Way and I know what a lot of people think about it. That is why I state it and don't just pronounce my opinion as some objective fact. What I do think it is, however, is that it has a semblance of being informed and it's not so easy to dismiss it outright by just stating that it's talking to the spirits and wrong by default because it's academic.

If he is right, and the music does suck from academic standpoint, we will have learned something new at least.

Ok, I'll ask her if she's the one helping with the practice for this particular concert, it should be her, but if she's not, whether she can bring me the scores anyway. It will be an interesting thing for me, too.

You didn't state shit son.

A lot of workcels on the Kodex claim to be 'in academia' but post opinions pertaining to their alleged fields like all the other retards would. By now I take 'working in academia' to mean they're just hanging out at universities a lot if stated by a Codexer.

'I'm an academic therefore I'm coming from the academic perspective and by that creed it sucks, I can't explain it better' is just lulzy.

How is that progress? I still am saying that it is barren from a technical standpoint and will fail in an academic exam. I even stated that it was an academic exam then, lol.

It doesn't work that way. You want me to start a musicological analysis that nobody outside of the field is going to understand? He has gaps of more than an octave within the voices of orchestra that create a "hole" in the sound, he only has 1 plan going on at the same time, instruments randomly go in and out of the plans, his voice-leading is non-existent, etc. etc. I'd need the score to show any specifics and explain why and how he should've done it differently.
