According to the story up on Destructoid, Diablo III has turned out to be a pretty successful game.

Despite controversy surrounding its always-online requirements, Diablo III has remained just a little bit successful. How successful? Well, it cleared 3.5 million sales within the first 24 hours of release, and has totaled over 6.3 million in the week since.

The sales represent a new record, as Diablo III has become the fastest selling PC game in history. Blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime said his company was "especially proud" of the gameplay feedback, but made sure to add his regret at the game's infamous login errors, wishing to, "reaffirm our commitment to make sure the millions of Diablo III players out there have a great experience with the game moving forward."

Does that mean a Diablo game would sell a ton on name alone, nevermind the actual quality of the title? You bet it would.

Considering the first two games were enjoyed by a bajillion people and it's been ten years since the last one this was kind of a no brainer. I hope GAMES JOURNALISERS are not genuinely surprised.

Blizzard has been tossing in copies of Diablo 3, random WoW junk, and beta access for their latest WoW x-pac to anyone who purchases a one-year subscription to World of Warcraft. In other words, the D3 sales number is hugely inflated by the number of people who were really just buying 1 year of WoW.

Fastest selling's a shit metric, there's more computer gamers right now then there's been in any point in time in history. But in a years time, there will probably be more, making the next piece of popamole the fastest selling computer game ever. Rinse and repeat.

This is disappointing as hell. Now game companies will point to D3 as a reason to always be online even in single player games and do shit like RMAH. Or maybe play a single player RPG where you can pay money through microtransactions to have the best equipment at the start of the game or pay for levels. They can also say since they made it online at all time that people had to purchase it and that's why it sold millions of copies. So piracy is a problem and a reason to have these servers.

    The possibilities are endless.

Why the fuck are sales figures fucking news? Jesus fucking christ. The RPG genre sucks as a whole so Codex follows suit. Use some fucking discretion.
