What is Darkfall: New Dawn?
Darkfall: New Dawn (DND) is an FPS-MMORPG set in the high-fantasy, vast, un-instanced world of Agon. The Darkfall franchise was originally launched by Aventurine Studios (a totally different development team) in 2009, with Darkfall Online. Aventurine then morphed it into the often-criticised Darkfall: Unholy Wars, and struggled to return that game to Darkfall’s glory days of 2009-2012.

It’s the only game around that’s got high-skilled FPS PvP, massive clan and alliance warfare, politics, war-mongering, spying, diplomacy, crafting, trading and PvE – all in the one place. The game breeds a social nature.

The graphics might look outdated now, but the gameplay remains superb. The changes its new developers Ub3rgames have brought to the game have already gone a long way.

At its simplest, Darkfall is:

Full loot
Player-skill-based PvP/PvE
Massively open world
Regional control

MMORPG where individual and clan reputation matter.

So what’s changed from the original Darkfall game?

Some highlights that are in for launch:

  • Localisation – banking and marketplaces will be local but you will have global access to your gold (Think EVE Online)
  • Armour traits – different armour types provide different potencies, and you can mix and match to suit your own playstyle
  • Titles – you can choose how you want to specialise in the available skills with up to 5 different titles (think of this like a skills soft cap/class system)
  • Meaningful alignment – going red (Bad) is a choice, but one that will make things much harder for those who dare kill their own kind, risk vs reward!
  • Spawn scaling – work together (even with people you don’t know) to get more loot and XP: mobs get harder and give better gains/loot when you bring more people.
  • No fast travel – keeping the world localised, encouraging trade and the need to defend local, specialised resources. Control your own territory or encroach on your neighbours!
  • Village control points – ‘king of the hill’ style village captures to gain your clan much needed clan meditation points, gold and local resources – and the same for you too!
  • PvP has completely changed – gone is the old DFO meta where you needed to level up all skills to be viable. In come reactive blocking, weapons that are all useful (even the one-handed weapons and shield combos), encumbrance and magnitude greatly affecting archery, spell powers and damage.
  • Mount inventories – to help you carry your gear, loot and wares
  • Dynamic harvesting – the further you are from safety, the better drops you’ll be getting
So much more than can be listed here!

They've changing the combat in the patch next week. They have introducing 'specs' so warrior/archer/mage or hybrid of two. For example you could have a fire mage vs earth mage or even a warrior using light armour for more attack speed (Berserker)

So yes and no. You won't have to bind and master a million abilities like the original (depending on playstyle)

My one gripe about the original Darkfall was the lack of specialization. It looks like they may have fixed that which means this might be a fantastic pvp mmo.

Aye it's got the potential to do really well as long as the devs make the right moves down the line.

Soo do you know how the progression is looking as of now? Like say I pick a warrior or whatever, how many /played hours will it take me to get 2H-sword + 2H-sword mastery + power attack + whirlwind + block + whatever else I need to level 75 + level up stats etc..? Or how long will it take a mage to get their 50 spells to 75? Assuming I'm not carried by some high level guild?

So the way leveling works now in DND:

The skill gains are 4 x the speed of the original darkfall even more so with factors below

Leveling with other people INCREASES the skill gain when hitting mobs, but also increases mob health and damage and LOOT (Only by a minor amount per-person, but loot is buffed quite well)

They have added a daily 'power hour' function skill. It's a 22hr cooldown skill that gives double skill gains for an hour, you can pop this and log off to use it another day for 2 hrs of power hour if you've got work or can't play that day.

New dawn also has Meditation points which are used to level up over time while online OR offline, similar to the eve online system. You gain meditation points from activities, quests, villages, maps, treasure chests etc.

Lastly the power gap/curve has changed also to be less linear and more of a curve (Level 1 - 60 in a skill/stat being 'front loaded' and the last 40 skill points only having a minor increase in power) for example a skill thats rank 60 will not be far off of one that's 100. In comparison to DFO where it was just a linear correlation / progression of power.

As for time or /played i'd say it'll take a good month to be 'viable' casually, powering out the grind i'd say 2 weeks. It will take a fair bit longer to be maxed out but this isn't as mandatory as the original game.

The power gap is no-where near as big in this version of the game considering the titles system (Which levels over time, not time played/activity, though the skills within titles do not follow this)

Hope that helps :)

Yeah i see why people would raise an eyebrow at the sub. I think they will plan to go free with premium down the line.

It's an EU server but a lot of mid / east coast NA players don't have problems with the ping. If you're under 150-200 you're good, they've improved the net-code / servers quite a bit (2017-18 hardware)

It's not too hard, i remember the original dark fall, one hundred of us in battle, 3/4 of the players standing still, me killing them and full looting plate armors....Hope they removed the atrocious grind too, people were statying logged 24/24 with a macro for spellcasting against a wall. Most hyped pvp game with the worst execution i can remember.

How does it work with clan vs clan warfare?
You can only freely kill someone if your clan issued a formal declaration of war against his?
What is the meaningful penalty? NPC Guards barring you from entering some areas?

Clans of the same race wont fight eachother.
You can freely kill other racial allies in villages and other control points within the game however.

Meaningful penalty means no access to banks, markets and quests of your racial faction if you decide to become bad (Similar to EVE or Archeage)

Darkfall: New Dawn

a game’s redemption

release, after nearly 2 years of development

Paris, France

January 30 2018, French startup Ub3rgames just announced the successful launch of their MMORPG: Darkfall: New Dawn. It was a challenging release that happened on the previous weekend. Three days only after launch the server is holding strong despite player counts raising by the day.

Originally developed by Aventurine in 2009, Darkfall Online was one of the most highly anticipated MMORPG, first and only MMOFPS with large scale combat, full loot system, and no tab targeting. DFO left thousands of fans mourning when the server closed in 2012, putting the game to its end.

Since February 2016, the indie studio, who took over the old and beloved game, has been working on unleashing a new and improved version of the MMORPG, under the name Darkfall: New Dawn, targeting both the veterans and new gamers.

“We always wanted to share this historical moment with our community who supported us for two years, so we were, - and still are - here, on the battlefield 24/7.” said GM Paul, one of the developers and game masters.

The players were longing for two big features finally introduced in the last patch before launch:

the local banking system - allowing for a player-driven economy.

the title system - giving the user the ability to choose their own specialization in the forms of perks and skills, offering diversity in a classless game.

These two changes created a real difference and are an improvement over the original game.

“Darkfall had such high expectations during the lead up to its original launch, and we feel we can eventually make good on all the promises made back then while correcting the original’s flaws. We’ll start with one of the most unique conquest games out there, and as time goes on, increase its depth to satisfy all kind of players. Darkfall: New Dawn is about redemption. ”said Ub3rgames CEO, Marc Thompson.

In an attempt to celebrate the launch, Ub3rgames released a surprise trailer for the players on the day before. The video published on Youtube is more technical and outlines the differences between DND and the original Darkfall Online. https://youtu.be/cR2euSMYpSo

'Been checking their forums lately, thinking about playing. Apparently Darkfall: New Dawn stopped charging for subs some time after the release (making the game kinda B2P for one-time $10 month sub) and got themselves €78k in debt. One of the players found an online document about liquidation process of Ub3rgames.
Ub3rgames said:
TL;DR/
We have to unfortunately confirm the situation:
There has indeed been a court judgement concerning the company.

We initially did not believe it because the website had inaccurate/outdated information and, in our mind, it was most likely a troll.
We were not aware we were even assigned to court, and we learned it through you guys. Yes, we know how that sounds.
Marc has an appointment with the liquidator on Tuesday.
We will keep you posted as things evolve.

This is not necessarily the end, as thankfully, there is an appeal procedure.
As we understand it, this judgement is essentially: "this company will never be able to pay up, so better close it down.".
We can contest that and make a case that we can indeed end up paying the debt.

Our plan is to essentially lawyer up and fight.
This process may take months, and we have no intention to go down.
Not after all the sacrifices we've done in the last 3 years.(...)

My guess is the only source of income was players buying lots of alts.
One of the changes introduced by Ub3rgames was locking crafting from everybody through Title system:
https://darkfallnewdawn.miraheze.org/wiki/Titles.
You need to mix and match a set of 5 active titles from the list of many. Some titles are adding scaling for damage, some add defense but others unlock the ability to craft items from one of the industry traits. So the more alts you have, the more variety of items you can craft yourself. I guess the system was introduced to promote cooperation among the players. Setting standard for one industry trait per player. As in you won't be choosing to gimp your damage for the possibility of playing a full crafter.
Fine idea, if you're charging for subs so most of the players will not consider paying for two or more accounts per month. They went B2P. I'm amazed by this.
