All the lights shut off in one go, stranding the prisoner in the darkness of his cell. It is the very beginnings of the 29th century. Back in New York, you had a damned good gig. Contracts left and right, guns, cars, women, men, money. You were a cyberpunk, and you defined style. Then the last gig got you busted. You never knew how. Maybe one of your partners double crossed you, or the Megacorp scum caught on to you, or maybe it was just an act of God, either way you got caught and here you are in Purgatory.

You have so far only served 6 of your 398 year sentence that society arbitrarily deemed on you and locked you up in an orbiting prison station for a handful of others just like you, the Condemned. Despite being 400 kilometers from Earth and isolated 24/7, life isn't so bad. To ensure your continued survival centuries into the future, the station has been equipped with state of the art facilities, which, in the 29th century, sometimes borders the magical. There is no fixed regimen of any sort asides from the mandatory lights off at 10:00 PM and lights on at 8:00 AM. Virtually every sort of amenity is provided except for sex, and the only rules are that you are not allowed to talk with other prisoners. A droid is provided for every three occupied cells in order to keep one's social sanity and to perform your requests.

Suddenly there is a click, and the door to your cell begins to open on its own. A droid’s voice drones out, “Prisoner #926, time for your appointment.” What appointment? You never heard anything about an appointment...

Before you were locked up however, you used to be quite the cyberpunk. In particular you were

1) An enforcer for the Red Dragon syndicate. You use intimidation to make others see your way, or a 10mm slug to the head if that doesn’t work.

2) A hacker. You sold your skills to the highest bidder, and no server was too tough for you to break into, no robot too elusive to hack into.

3) A cleaner. Some call you an assassin, others call you a ghost. Whatever they called you, they all needed you for one thing: To do something without being seen or caught.

4) A lone wolf. You were decent at most things, but hardly one of the best. This is good, because the only one you can rely on is yourself.

Your weapon of choice has always been

1) Pistols. Handguns, revolvers, you name it. Most are small and concealable, and they get the job done.

2) Long guns. Shotguns, rifles. Really want to make sure he’s dead? This is a good option.

3) Submachine gun. Automatic fire in a compact package.

4) Heavy weapons. Machineguns, launchers. When you really want to make sure he’s dead and collateral is no concern.

5) Hand-to-hand. Whether it’s Taekwondo or Judo or simple street brawling, you are considered armed and dangerous all the time.

6) Blades. Knives, swords, anything you can cut, slice and dice with.

7) Melee weapons. Clubs, batons, sledgehammers, axes. Traumatizing.

What have you been focusing on for the six years here?

1) Working out. Keeping your strength and cardio up is good, and who knows what the hell augments your average ganger or fed will be packing once you're out?

2) Reading. Fiction, non-fiction. Dolstoy, Shakespeare, the New York Times. Staying smart and in-the-know is essential to surviving.

3) Sports. Not a lot of one-man sports that exist, but you've been practicing your hand-eye coordination and agility.

4) Technology. Knowing how things work in the 29th century is a pretty good idea.

Lastly, what gender are you and what is your name? Include a nickname.

I second Ostap. Wonder if Turkey made it to the 29th century.

Need a tally breaker for weapon of choice.
---------
You are escorted out of your cell by the robot who is no higher than waist level and probably unarmed as well. It makes no attempt at small talk as it guides you through the the prison. Since it is lights out, the whole prison is nearly pitch black, making it a natural deterrent to would be escape artists. As you pass by the few cells that were inhabited, you can make out the silhouettes of the locked figures out of the corner of your eye. Some men, some women, a handful were even crossdressers. Some were built, some were lanky little figures, but regardless of who they were and what they looked like they all had the same intense presence and aura that you had. Through their stare alone they hurled against you their accusations and rage. They all probably thought you were a snitch.

Interestingly, two other cells were unlocked with their doors wide open.

After a journey through airlocks and hallways, the robot finally stops before a thick door. "The warden is expecting you. I will open the door now. Please be aware of the 20mm pop-up turrets in each corner of the office. Any suspicious actions will cause the security mechanisms to activate. Have a pleasant journey, #926." The robot freezes in its movements and static noises begin to hum from it. After a few seconds the door unbolts and begins to open up to the side, revealing whoever and whatever was inside.

The room was spacious, and furnished with only the basics. Desk, chair, computer, filing cabinets. To the right side of the room however lay a gold fish bowl on top of a stand which was the only decent source of lighting in the dim office. "John 'Generik' Smith. Frankly, I'm surprised your parents aren't here with you after giving you a name like that. Nonetheless, a very colourful record you have here. Sabotage of corporate assets, first degree murder, espionage, hacking, kidnapping... The instances of these ones number in the hundreds alone." The bald, dark-skinned man sitting at the chair was none other than the warden. If you recall correctly, his name is Sebastian Moreno.

"I will be to the point. Have you heard of the Cyber Criminal unit in Oedo?" Oedo is the capital city of Japan following the island-wide earthquakes and devastation in the 28th century. While you don't know anything about a Cyber Criminal unit, with you being here you can quickly deduce its purpose and more importantly, the reason why you're here. Fight fire with fire, send criminals after criminals. A smile plays on Sebastian's face, "Good, I'm glad to see prison time hasn't made you a case of brain rot. Long story short, the Oedo unit been successful enough that the titular American government wants to see it implemented in New York. Naturally, the corporations agreed and so here you are, John Smith." Sebastian put harsh, loathing inflections as he spoke out your name.

1) [Renegade] "Fuck you. ..."

2) [Paragon] "I know what I've done, Mr. Moreno. So what's involved?"

3) [Cool] "Tell me more. ..."

4) "..."

edit.. changing to 4.. to hopefully keep 3 from winning. 3 is a terrible option.

Also more people need to vote for 7 as a weapon. We need some axe wielding cyberpunk.

Silent protagonist character development is hard.

It pushes a lot of the narrative onto other characters which could end up making those other characters drive the story more than would be appropriate in certain situations. The protagonist needs to provide some sort of feedback even if it's a few words but a more lengthy inner thought process dialog is still needed imo.

Not that I'm a writer of any sort but that's my 2 cents.

Oh, and flop me from 5(unarmed) to 1 (handguns) to break the weapon tie.

You do realize the warden will tell you more even if you tell them to fuck off.. if you are too eager the warden won't respect you.

Codex cannot into character development.
