You know what's a bummer? Nubia is now in the game, and we're on the 6th iteration of Civ without any Balkan state represented.

They've had Zulu, Mali, Ethiopia and Nubia. They've had the Polynesians. The city state of Venice.

But no Balkan state. No Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia (I'm excepting the Greeks/Macedonians here, for obvious reasons).

CivVI put much more importance into city placement, but other aspects were dumbed down into stone age. War became even more boring and tedious than CivV, with AI unable to cope with 1UPT and exploiting terrain bonuses, which even CiVIV AI could do well and understand what force accumulation was and what bonuses forests and hills would provide. UI was atrocious, diplomacy turned into a turd.
I blame Steam and CivV. Civilization V was the first of the series that was released on Steam and used Steam multiplayer and mods integration. And digital sales skyrocketed along with statistics about how many played it. CivIV had gayspy, the absolute worst piece of shit imaginable that could be used for multiplayer games, which also contributed to the deathof Red Alert 3 multiplayer. Had no STEAM workshop one-click mod installation, but had awesome UI and somewhat adequate AI, if that could be said about AI in strategy games.
This disparity in statistics about CivV and CivIV put Firaxis into a belief that they've done everything right with Civilization V and should move n that direction. The result is CivVI.

Yet the game dropped off the radar faster than even Beyond Earf. I haven't seen any threads about it on any forum I visit in months and even CivFanatics basically stopped bothering.

Game is mostly kept on float by multiplayer and CivIV MP is unbearable. Still even with GameSpy MP was full after several years post release. Plus, game was released in 2004. That's 13 years ago. Beyond Earth was released with Steam multiplayer and mod integration in 2014. And we still have active mods for CivIV, like Alpha Centauri conversion etc.
I've bought CivIV on old Cd-disk. There were no widespread digital distribution back then, so lots of people had to get _PATCHES_ from disks.

Nitpick: Hungary and most of Romania are in/surrounded by the Carpathian mountains, and are not on the Balkan peninsula.

Firaxis why u no have glorious land of Hungary!? :argh:
Because they were largely irrelevant? What do you know about Hungarians from year 700? Have Hungarians defeated Mongols during theirs attack?

During the second Mongol invasion, actually, yes. Mongols had their asses handed to them by Hungary.

And in a wider historical context, Hungary was a pretty major European power for most of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

Also, they conquered a decent sized swath of Europe before joining with Austria to form the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Edit: And fought off the Ottomans and other Muslim nations to protect against the many jihads into Europe.

If they really did something awesome posters would reply with proud description of what Hungarians did. Instead they said just Mongols frozen in Mountains and starved in front of Hungarian's fortifications.

Well they were not against Baku, so all these peasants that were killed, and devastation of countryside...

Also, they conquered a decent sized swath of Europe before joining with Austria to form the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Last decent king was Matthias Corvinus, then rich knew they should elect someone who would allow them to grab more lands at state expenses, and elected Vladislav "I agree to anything" as a new head of Hungary. Then they robbed as they wanted until one Hungarian rebelled against Vladislav, crushed his armies, and weakened Hungary to be easily attacked by Ottoman empire.
Then they elected a Habsburk as one of theirs monarchs after age of decadence, then anther nobles elected another king, which split theirs country into three pieces, considering Ottomans stayed in conquered territories while both monarchs were fighting with each other.

The empire was called Habsburk monarchy and states under it. Later after parliamentary and nationalistic reforms reorganized into Austria-Hungary.

Which also means, as long as Austria is present as a civilization, they shouldn't use Hungary. Also Austria should get special ability "marriage fraud".
