Why We Are Changing Chuchel’s Appearance
December 21 - Lukas [amanita design]

You may have been taken by surprise with today’s update for CHUCHEL. It comes with a fair amount of minor bug fixes and tweaks that you may never even notice, but there’s one more thing you surely can’t miss.

This is your new Chuchel.

In reaction to a number of requests we’ve seen coming from the players throughout the year, we ultimately decided to swap Chuchel’s colours and change his body colour from black to orange. We acknowledge that due to significant differences in culture and history between Central Europe and other regions, we did not consider the possibility of Chuchel, a living dust bunny, being associated with ‘blackface’, a theatrical racial stereotype which emerged in the United States in the 19th century.

We would like to sincerely apologize to anyone who has been offended by the original appearance of Chuchel. As a team of peace-minded creative people, we simply do not want any of our games and characters even remotely associated with racism or any other form of hate crime. In order to avoid any further misinterpretations, Chuchel’s appearance has just been updated here on Steam and will be changed on all platforms in the upcoming days and weeks.

Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support,
Amanita Design

We live in 2018 and some people still don't want to see a black videogame protagonist? Racists everywhere

Feels like a calculated PR stunt. Like, who even cared? There wasn't any unrelenting SJW campaign against the game. There was like an obscure blog post or two a year ago when Chuchel came out. And now they decide to "do the right thing"? Sounds legit.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Suck, the reason why he's a fluffy black ball is because the dev clearly want him to contrast with white background, combined with other animated characters and objects to create a pop up book feel. The new Chuchel looks ugly as hell, especially yellow mouth outline and the black hat dropping shadow on his forehead.
