I've got the CT soundtrack in my music library, I probably listen to it more than anything else.

Have you tried the Chrono Trigger Symphony? I was skeptical at first, especially regarding the symphonic orchestra part, but I was proven wrong, and quite happily I should add—a credit to the guy’s talent. He changed a few things here and there but, once I got past my initial purist distrust, it proved to be for the best, and it managed to capture the warmth of the original music. It is probably my favourite rendition of the soundtrack.

I dunno, a big part of why I enjoy listening to video game soundtracks so much is it conjures up a lot of nostalgia from when I played hearing the same music. Even if the pieces are excellent in their own right, they just can't give me the same feels as hearing the music that was playing when Frog split open the moutain, or when Marle crashed through the window in the trial to save her father. I've got a lot of strong memories tied to old games like that.

I kinda feel the same, but I try to give everything a fair chance if I can. Again, I was skeptical with that one and initially dismissed it, but I decided to give it that fair chance later and I don’t regret it.

I remember being interested in that, and disappointed by its fate, but I'm much more curious whatever happened with the ROM hack sequel that Square killed -- Crimson Echoes. Any of you guys ever play it? I kind of suspect it would be terrible in the KQ Silver Lining fan fiction way, but it certainly generated buzz.

I played Crimson Echoes 3-4 years ago, at that time it was very amateurish concuction - didn't get me excited at all.

I'm playing this right now for the first time on PS Vita and I must say, I totally understand the cult this game has. Almost everything is very good: plot, pace, characters, enemy variety, unique skills, music. And even now, after all those years, you can just feel that somebody poured his heart and soul into making this. I can only imagine how would it feel to play it in 1995 or 1996.

The final fantasy series has been relative shit for some time now, focusing on characters that are far too pretty, etc.
Best example I can think of is Vaan, though originally the character for FF12 was supposed to be the older Basch but the Japs whined so much about it executive meddling prevailed.
The guy who created FF Tactics worked on that, as Lead I think, and immediately left Square afterwards. He cited creative differences as the reason.

Vaan wasn't even supposed to be in FF12, which explains how he has no input during the story and having him there or not, changes not in the game.

I actually haven't played a Final Fantasy game after 8, aside from Final Fantasy Record Keeper on my phone.
Also, are there any good modding tools out there for War of the Lions?
I'd love to create battles that are actually challenging for the player in some way, require good positioning on the battlefield, etc.

Some crazy good modding tools for FFT roms, both for psp and psx. You can easily create new classes with entirely new abilities that do basically any combination of effects you can think of.

LOL go play FF X on emulator, FF X-2 and enjoy insanity ride. I wonder if FFXII woudlnt' be better on emulator, that fan version that combined english text and zodiac Japanese version worked well. And then you might try to get some free copy of FF XIII just to see stuff. (If you wanna to do it just for story, play on easy. It's well balanced in difficulty, and because they know roughly power of party, ironman would be rather difficult. Even avoid reloading like a plague ironman is fairly difficult. Namely Sash Eidelon is a bitch.)

If you play FF X-2, go with original Yuna route, then in second half do it in inverse order.

FF 12 is legit a very good fucking game issues with Vaan notwithstanding! It plays and feels and reads absolutely nothing like a modern FF but it also doesnt feel anything like an older FF... it is its own thing entirely.

(Which is why it proved divisive amongst the fanbase. Well and Vaan stuff.)

But seriously Vaan is only shoehorned into the plot for the first game act afterwards you can take him out of the party and never see him again. Though I admit the little fucker grew on me LEWL LOL LOLMZ gee whiz

See I'd go 10 instead of 12 because 12 just had too large & barren combat areas, which quickly became tiresome.

But I agree with the post overall. Both are definitely worth a look, and are still embeded enough in their FF roots to be enjoyable.

It would be probably a big hit if released today as is (for modern platforms, that is)

I somehow doubt that, although its a hypothesis that is unfair to the game as it is indeed a game that set the path for the genre. So we wouldnt have todays j-rpg market without it.

It also wasnt that much of a hit at its initial release i believe? It just became kind of a cult classic for several reasons that are not necessarily all to be attributed to the quality of the game though.

Which doesnt mean its not a good game.

i blame finalfantashit: why work on more masterpieces which require a lot of effort when shit sells a lot already?

chrono trigger ruined my taste because it's been my first jrpg ever and i couldn't appreciate anything else anymore after trying this godsend.

What a cuck. FF IS CT only usually with actually half-decent gameplay. FF6 vs CT for example, the choice is clear.

Eh, CT battles weren't THAT simple. Plenty of enemies were basically immune to physical attacks, or had deadly counter attacks, etc. The game was super easy, but only if you played around the battle mechanics properly.

Chrono Trigger was not a cult classic it most definitely sold well. It was a normal-classic.

as for FF6 vs CT... thats actually a really tough fucking choice. Those are probably tied for all-around best JRPGs of all time alternating with each other between #2 and #3 spots.

#1 spot is obviously occupied by Earthbound.

The game was super easy, but only if you played around the battle mechanics properly.

More like don't actively gimp yourself by refusing to fight enemies or buying better gear. The mechanics are about as vanilla as you can get and require the absolute minimum amount of thinking to get past, (wow, block when the boss charges up the fuck you attack, wow) except maybe that one boss.
