The patch has landed. Haven't tried it yet, though.

And here I was going to say "Terry Gilliam likes this", except the punters themselves beat me to it... :)

I read in a thread on tweakers about long load times and immediately thought back to my carmageddon 1 days on a pentium 75.

I even timed the loading times and they went over 5 minutes

Pfft, that's nothing. I had 20-30 minute loading times on my Amiga. I hacked it so I could play games I wasn't supposed to play with that model. Finished X-Com without doing a single large UFO, since those missions couldn't be loaded.

...now I bitch and moan about 30 sec loading times.

Had a go. It feels no different to me. Chuggy in general, laggy at parts.

On the upside, the other vehicles are noticeably smarter, which is a big plus.

'tis updating for me as we speak.

Let's see if lowest settings runs smoother than it did (which was decent).

So, I take it dudes who made this haven't been working on any games since Carma 2? Would explain the awesome optimization.

Runs exactly the same as it did before.

This. I'm not noticing any difference except in powerups. Got a powerup I'd never seen before (Ped Annihilator) and used it to nail a couple of achievements in one go.

As for that handegg game I tested it on - well, one team still has a kicker, so that's something...

ok, just tried the not-removed-from-inventory edition: on my rig (i5-4690 + 3 year old amd 7850, i.e. not even mid-range by today's standards) it runs just fine in 1920×1080, everything high, AA off, translucent shadows off. it's not 60fps, but it's a solid constant 30+ fps. that it should run much smoother given the graphical quality, i agree, but it's not a total clusterfuck.

the control of the car feels a bit weird, it's missing the weight of even C2, let alone C1. i don't like that. i'm also not digging the all-out cornyness/cheesyness of everything, i'm more partial the the cheesy-yet-dark atmosphere of C1. those would be my 2 major complaints, a minor one would be the upgrade system that demands both unlocking chapters and hunting for tokens on the maps

Echoes my thoughts more or less exactly but I would add that I'm also disappointed by the game's mediocre AI, to me it feels like they just copy/ pasted Carma 1's extremely basic AI code again. The timer and shitty performance are your only real enemies.

The lack of peds in multiplayer is a big downer as well.

Also, Nobby (head of Stainless) posted this on Steam:

Performance and Optimisation Issues
Hey Carmafans

We’re very sorry to hear that a number of you who have bought Carmageddon: Reincarnation or are updating to the full release are still having problems; with frustration over the minute-long load times of some events, PC's not keeping the game at a constant 60fps, or dropping below players’ expected frame-rates.

We've been working at full tilt to get the game to its current state. And I believe we've achieved our primary aim, which was to reproduce the fun and anarchy of the original, in a package with a lot of content and laughs for your buck. Yes, it lacks some polish - it's not had a triple-A budget to throw at it, and has been developed by our relatively small indie studio. But it’s been made with love and passion by a really dedicated team of Carmageddon nuts, who really, really want to see it succeed.

It’s great that we’re getting feedback indicating a significant number of players are experiencing improvements to their gameplay experience due to the optimisations that have gone into the game, the frame-rate having improved significantly in the period since Beta on many rigs from minimum to recommended spec. This has been our experience while testing builds both internally and with external specialists – and it led to us feeling confident about going to full release.

I’d like to emphasise again that we’re taking all of your feedback hugely seriously and state that we DO listen to all the bug reporting, feedback and criticism, and that it WILL inform how we go about scheduling the patches and updates still to come.

In an old issue of PC Gamer (US) there's a review for the original Carmageddon. I found the review summary at the end quite interesting:

Highs: Guts and gore! Very playable and addictive.
Lows: An unfinished feel, feeble graphics engine, too many minor nags.
Bottom line: An incredibly fun game, but rough around the edges and technologically inferior to other action racing games on the market.
Final verdict: 78%

Seems that certain things are just par for the course over at Stainless... :)

Man, this game is getting terrible reviews from dorito reviewers.

Graphics bad, performance bad.. Yep, all true and valid criticisms.

But terrible controls, cars are uncontrollable etc? Fucking assholes. It feels so much like the old carma games.

Don't know why I am am surprised anyway.
