Look man, if you're really interested in those games, how about you give it a little good will, try them out, or read some other threads, or go to rpg watch. This shit is a bit too much for you I think, I don't know why someone would go to such an obvious hardcore obsessed community about a hobby when they barely are familiar with said hobby. It'd be like I don't know posting on a hockey forum when you barely don't know anything about it, asking others to tell you who are the best teams. I don't know man, something like that.

Also, if you respond to my posts with another shitty meme, I really don't know how much I'm going to handle such a sharp show of wit, maybe by ripping your tongue off or something

If you don't like the games, that's fine. Believe it or not there's a fair amount of posters here that don't like PST or Fallout. No biggie. Just post about whatever games you do like, but you shouldn't try to force yourself to play something you don't like just because a bunch of people say it's the greatest thing ever. It may not be for you.

Lies! You can only trully appreciate a game after you've finished it 7 times.

    lol actually I like it.

I've been playing through but now I crash when leaving the Siege tower. Something about an assertion error.

Do I need to get the Blade of the Immortal or can I skip the Siege Tower golem and still get through fine.

Or is there a save editor or some way to force that item into my inventory.

Hey, I come to RPG Codex specifically so I don't have to see this. Don't do this ever.

Shit, maybe just focus on playing those first? They are actually way more fun than Arcanum or PST. Easy to use UI's as well.

As much as I enjoy these games now, I see where the OP is coming from.

The hardest thing for me these days is the waiting. Waiting to walk across the screen, or waiting for the next combat turn. When many of these games were made, people were playing them on a 486. Back then all games were slow, that's one of the reasons Wolfenstein/Doom was such a breakthrough, it was one of the first truly 'fast' games. Back then the design standard was to create graphics and function on the bleeding edge of what a 486 could handle, and assume the player is used to slow pace games, and will therefore tolerate it. (back then the player's machine was the biggest bottleneck, as opposed to today's mammoth production costs).

So, when all of the OPs games where made, they were made for the current generation of hardware, and maybe the next. The guys who made these games probably never imagined that 15-20 years later there would be people like us wanting to play their game. They probably assumed games 15-20 years in the future would be so amazing that noone would be interested in their game. They just wanted to innovate, make a profit, and keep their awesome job.

Games that play on DOSBox can be emulated faster, so combat and walking/traveling can be sped up to custom preferences. Not so with the 4 games the OP listed.

So this is actually a significant barrier of entry for new players. Back when these games came out, all PC games were slow. It was the accepted norm and players were accustomed to it. Now, transitioning from consoles or modern PC games to those games requires a great degree of patience, but as we know the payoff is worth it.

To the OP. I'd save PST for last, and start with Fallout I or Arcanum (roll a mage).

Way it sounds, you are using a walkthrough for the game? Tip - throw that thing away and play the game on your own without spoilers. For the case you finish the game somehow, you will thank us later. That's just some kind of game where you have to experience it for yourself instead to rely on a walkthrough. Only consult it if you are really stuck and don't know how to proceed (happened once to me in the game aswell). Don't be a dick and ruin your gaming experience with a walkthrough.

If you didn't use such a walkthrough and I misinterpreted your post, ofcourse I apology too.

lol I did the opposite of these suggestions, but maybe that's good because I'm getting through the worst? interface first.

No only when I get stuck (then again I get stuck a lot). But I actually entered that area and talked to the golem and got the blade. However when leaving I got the error so that's how I know.

I did realize I didn't turn in my receipt so I got the unfolding portal and just hopped in. Hopefully I can finish the game without running into an assertion error.

Fallout 1 and 2 have sfall to speed up combat, Arcanum's real-time mode is blazingly fast and it has a fast turn based option that skips enemy animations, and Torment is real time with pause which isn't slow at all.

Also 486 what? In the mid-late 90s it was all about the pentiums.

If I read correctly, you dumped all points into WIS, INT and CHA and moan about getting your ass kicked by hive thugs in close combat which you could easily outrun, taken care off by Morte or a certain Gith, fry with MMs etc. Does not compute.

So basically, the OP is forcing himself to play some games he doesn't like for exactly what purpose?

For me, Torment was not just a game, it was an experience. I was absolutely blown away by everything, the graphics, the story and writing, the atmosphere and NPCs. And music, goddamn, that music! And this guy here is forcing himself to play a game he doesn't feel like playing anyway, and uses a goddamn walkthrough to speed things up whenever he thinks he's stuck? What the hell is wrong with kids these days?

Seriously, wtf man? If you're just playing to see the ending credits and have some highbrow sense of completion, then stop forcing yourself, you're wasting your own damn time. Get over it. Go play FFXIII or KoA:R or something. Really.

Yeah you're right about 486s, off by a few years, but the point is still valid. PCs in the mid 90s were slow.

Also, speeding up combat is only half the problem, and usually the lesser half. Walking around Tarant in Arcanum is a complete pain for instance.

Hi guys ! I so want to play these games but I somehow can't, yet I'll be damned if I let go without asking as many inane questions as I can. So ? Any tips ? Tricks ? Exploits ? Spoilers ? Editors ? Stuff I could discover by myself if I played all of 5 more minutes ?

Where did I say I didn't like the game? Also I just finished it.

I used to believe that isometric games were terrible but I think with some strong updates they can still be viable.

I wanted to play these games because I like heavy story based RPG's and these are the ones that get mentioned all the time.

Mainly I was forcing myself through the interface, not really the game if that makes sense. I also had a ton of technical problems that ruined the experience a bit with it but it definitely is in my top 5. That's why I kept playing it to get through

I dunno it never seemed to be held in such high esteem as the others. Plus Bioware...

Walking around in these games is no slower than anything modern. Tarant had too many damn bottlenecks true, but it's the only city like that. The waypoint system helps.

You're having a fucking laugh mate. IE games are some of the nicest looking games out there, along with Commandos 2.

Oddly I started up Arcanum and find that to be more clunky than PS:T.
