(Yeah I know it's a port of a mobile version, and I know it's not Hero Quest, but man. I played the fuck out of Hero Quest and played a little Warhammer Quest and I want to believe this will be good)

Edit: "The standard edition includes 4 heroes, 3 game areas and a special Vampires and Zombies tileset & enemies pack. There are additional in game options to buy up to 7 more heroes, 5 extra weapons and a Skeletons & Necromancers enemy pack. The Warhammer Quest Deluxe pack includes all of these extras."
Ok I may have been a tiny bit hasty.

I played a significant amount of this on my iPad, and was somehow able to access the IAP without having to pay for it. It's been a while so I don't remember if the SPPOOKY SKELINGTONS pack is exclusive or not, but I don't know if I'd pay $27 Maple Syrup Dollars for it.

Thanks for the heads up. My friend has been raving about the iPad version for a while now, so I'm interested to try this out.

Codex 2014 Make the Codex Great Again! Grab the Codex by the pussy
The Steam Winter Holiday thingie is up again, though with this disclaimer:

NOTE: On Thursday Dec 11th we had an issue with Gems that meant we needed to reset the Auction and start over. We apologize for the interruption. Any placed bids will need to be placed again.
  • All Gems created by you have been returned to your Inventory
  • All Gem purchases from the Community Market have been reimbursed. View your Store Transactions to see the Wallet Credit to your account.
  • All previous Auction bids have been canceled and the Auction has been reset.
  • Additionally, anyone who traded away items in exchange for Steam Gems on the first day of bidding will receive a copy of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive in their Inventory.
That explains why I suddenly have 1500 gems now.

And the 2014 Holiday Profile is already up to 233,600 gems at the time of posting.

EDIT: They also fixed the "Make booster packs" exploit by limiting it to 1 Booster Pack per game, per day.

Fuck gems, when is the xmas sale starting?
I looked through my cards and if I convert them I get like 25-50 gems per card. Cost of some games is astronomical compared to amount of cards I have. So yeah, I'll stay out of this auction thingy.

I read that although the top bets are very high, it's quite cheap to get in top 100. Then again it seems to be too much hassle to save a few bucks (and top bet may as well be made by some rich dude who wants to troll others out of their chance). Brilliant marketing strategy, though. Valve knows how to milk tards.

I once managed to sell a foil card for $10.

Once.

The gem thing is set up to encourage people to craft badges, the cards are worth 10-30 gems, but the backgrounds and emoticons are worth 60-100 gems.

I suspect it's an attempt to get the card market deflated again.
Many people convert their shit into gems = less super-cheap cards on the market.
In the long run it might be better to hold onto your cards, if that is the case. Especially given the rather high bids in the auctions.

I missed all the exciting stuff in the beginning, and at the moment, I don't quite see the value in gems. Maybe I'm missing something (I didn't really look that closely into it), but if I get 2 gems or $0.10 for a card, the latter seems like the better deal. Or are there some super awesome auctions available I haven't seen?

Of course, there's always the option to make the auction more attractive by setting the sale prices to "suck".

The card prices actually do seem to be rising, both because of people gemming (And apparently not being able to massively exploit the system now) and because of the winter sale card drops. I'm torn between cashing in during this auction thing or the actual winter sale. I'm sort of thinking now since card prices are up and don't have people going "Oh shit, Steam sale!" and dumping cards for dosh yet. Thinking it might be the high point.

It's probably kind of a moot point and most likely would make a dollar or two (Max) difference, but eh.

Straight up converting cards to gems isn't worth it, you get far too few gems. Backgrounds and emoticons are where it's at since those give around 80-100 gems each, and even so it's more efficient to just buy them with money (3 to 5 cents each) than to craft your own badges and then sell those. But even so it's still not particularly worth it since you're turning real money or items that can be turned in to store credit for funny money for the chance to get something. At the moment all the bidding is huge since the actual auction doesn't start until the 15th and people are going berserk on these first listings, but after that a new copy of every item shows up every 45 minutes until the stash of 100 runs out. Potentially some stuff will go cheap in "Gem value" during off-hours and after people have blown their wad, but I'm not too keen on betting on that.

Especially since if you DID want to exchange cash for gems you'd have to do a fuckton of clicking. Not worth the hassle.

Also to get all the backgrounds and emotes that have been stagnating on the market at 3 cents for several months to start moving again. Lots of untapped pennies there.

Losing bids carry over, so off-hours won't make much of a difference on their own. If anything, I'd advise seeking out the more obscure games on your wishlist and watching how they fare after the initial wave of high bids dies down. Anything even remotely popular will likely remain more expensive than the sale price, but if you can find something other people aren't looking at, you may be able to score. One that I was following yesterday was at 200 gems for hours before people started bidding up on it, for example, and I think there have only been maybe 10-15 bids since then.

There is no real value in gems. But that's kind of the point. There's a reason when you walk into a casino the first thing they do is have you convert your money into tokens. It divorces you by one step from your associating it with real money. So, one doesn't sense how much real money is slipping is away as one put bids on the House Jackpot Auction.
