Shouldn't it in this case be 'poisonous'?

At first I said no, because I thought the difference was that venom is biological and poison was chemical.

Then I looked it up and it turns out that the difference is whether it's injected or secreted. So if a snake or spider bites you, that is venom, but if you touch a slimy frog and die, that was poison.
