Baten Kaitos and Lost Kingdoms duologies are pretty damn good, though not exactly what you want.

The sequel to the GBC version of Pokemon TCG recently got "translated" (the out of battle text is mostly cleaned up machine translations, but that isn't a bit problem for such a simple plot and characters.). What IS a problem is that it is pretty disappointing gameplay wise (this coming from someone who loved the original). While the original was criminally short if you had some idea of how to play the card game (under 6 hours as a completionist) , this one feels horribly padded for its ~26 hours (Give or take. Some throttle abuse was used while some save states were used to restart fights. Didn't bother with a post-game bonus "dungeon"), with half the fights in the second having arbitrary rules that mean you have to custom build a deck for pretty much everything. If not for the ease of getting lots of cards with save state enhanced gambling, the time would likely have been a lot more, as it wouldn't be quite as easy to get a shit ton of cards without grinding (even before the second half it is fairly grindy, as in the original your starter deck had some nice cards that could be supplemented for a decent deck, but in this one, your starter deck is pretty much crap).

The yu gi oh games for the PSP are pretty fun and I think you can play them on JPCSP. I had tag force 5 on my PSP before I sold it and it was my best CCG videogame experience in a while.
I'm always striving to find a decent card game but they don't make it like shandalar anymore. Or a least like the first two pokemon games (I actually played both a long time ago). I remember I had a blast with a japanese shaman king tcg game when I was like 12 and it was terribly fun (it was linear but you could play tournaments and stuff IIRC):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPW8H-xHHvM (This glitched video is the only gameplay I found of it).

No patch whatsoever anyways, but I remember I got terribly autistic with this game and basically figured out what every card did through trial and error and eventually finished it. It helped I really liked Shaman King at that time.

There are a couple of japanese ccg games that never made it outside of japan, even for the DS.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_collectible_card_games check under "Console and PC/Online Games Simulating CCGs"

There even is a japan only MTG game for the dreamcast.

Try "Neverland Card Battles" it's a card/boardgame for psp that seems to be in english and should be emulatable.

There is also a japanese only game called battle spirits ds which is apparently pretty recent:

Tried it like a year ago but my japanese was barely enough to play it and forgot about it without even finishing the tutorial, over 1000 cards doesn't sound bad at all.

There's nothing that can compete with Shandalar I think though. This genre is so dead it's sad.

If you find anything remotely fun just let us know. I'm really itching for a decent CCG videogame.

Hum, I knew Baten Kaitos, but not Lost Kingdoms....will take a look, thanks!

Checked almost all the PC games listed...most of them are dead mmos, annoying pay-to-win shit or casual as fuck flash games... the one that showed more promise was Alteil, but it was just announced that they will close the servers in a month... /facepalm

    Will keep looking thought...

Note the second game is a large improvement on the first, so try it even if you find the 1st a little clunky. Also it works on Dolphin but not Dios Mios (second game is fine on both)

Never tried Metal Gear Ac!d but it exists.
