Interesting article that remind me of one of those boons of Everquest had originally: A good deal of stuff was blocked by enemies that levels or spells would help you with. Evil races had closer access to some of the better areas of the game originally, but that was countered by the fact that they were killed on sight by the guards of many towns. In places there'd be choke points where they'd have to navigate past relying on spells or the help of others, like going through Highhold Pass or avoiding the main road through the commonlands because the guards hated them there. There was a way to avoid them though, but that required going down south through the main continent that was at least twice the distance to run in an already large world to run through.
