The boardgame is amazing, but good luck finding 5 people nerdy enough to play it with you.

Maybe you can recommend some good sci-fi shows otherwise then.

Oh wait, there aren't m(any) and we've all seen the passable ones already. I'm about ready to give these animus a shot just because there's just nothing decent, space-y left to watch.

I initially started watching season 1, and was immediately intrigued by Tricia Helfer in Baltar's head, and all the ambiguity surrounding her nature and motivation, especially since a lot of plot-critical stuff Baltar does is inspired by her in some way. So I was curious how that would be explained, and then it all got tied into the overarching mythology of the show, and just wanted to see some resolution to what ended up being the key to every interesting mystery they introduced.

And then I watched the final season. Comparing that Lost is an insult to the latter, I think. At least Lost had attempted to explain itself somewhat. BSG, on the other hand, chose what I think was the most retarded non-ending ever.

Intention is not result. LOST made shit up on the fly with every episode, and its "explanations" were akin to a crazy hobo rambling to himself.

BSG is very much the same. Especially if you attempt to watch their mini-movie called "The Plan", where they actually "attempt" to explain everything. It's a collection of boring disjointed scenes, pretty much.

I should also point out you don't really need nerdy people to play the BSG boardgame. The mechanics of the game are not actually that sophisticated, and it's the social aspects of secrecy, accusation and betrayal that make the game fun, even people who are not normally into boardgames can have a lot of fun with it.

bloody 'ell Ive agreed with pretty much everything you've written.

I was annoyed at six and Baltar because while she did start off as interesting.. her shtick got boring and although Baltar was onscreen for a lot of the time he didnt really do much important stuff except acting as a traitor/holy man etc.

I was made into watching this by a BRO who claimed it was so awesumsauce.

Season 1 already seemed derpy to me, but somehow I kept watching, just because I was so fucking bored I really didn't have much to do.

And I noticed that later on I kept watching just because raging at the show and trying to spot all the obvious rip offs in it was way more entertaining than the series itself.

There were a couple of key factors that annoyed the FUCK out of me. One was the aforementioned pseudo-spirituality that tried REALLY hard to be like in Dune, but ended up retarded. Second, was how Galactica was the paragon of democracy... IN SPAAAAAAAACE! "HEY, BROS, WE CAN END THIS WAR LIKE, RIGHT NOW!" "OSHIT BUT THAT WOULDN'T BE HUMANITARIAN AGAINST THE BLOODTHIRSTY ALIEN ROBOTS THAT WANT US ALL DEAD : (((((((((((((((((((' fucketh me. And third, finally, was the absolute lack of any sort of pacing, suspense or whatever. Railway narration at its finest. Something's supposed to be a BIG DEAL in like 20 episodes? You already know about it from season start. Greatest example being revealing half the cast to be mystical cylons. "Hey, guise, let's not reveal them, you know, one by one to add sum mystary. Let's just show ALL of them, AT ONCE, when they follow a Hendrix cover of Dylan! THIS WILL BE AWESUM, EH? EH???'

Fuck this show. Most overrated piece of hipster garbage I've had the misfortune of watching.

Yeah The Plan pretty much showed that they had no fucking idea why they put some things into the show and just hastily used whatever explanation had come to their minds. They put crap in because it seemed AWESUM without thinking how it fits into the grand scheme of things first. The result was an incoherent mess of a storyline that kept falling apart from the beginning of season 3.

Compare that to Babylon 5 where the writers knew exactly where they were going from the very start and didn't make shit up. That is how they should have done it when they thought of the whole metaphysical plot instead of going ad hoc with it.

I can agree with this sentence. But only because I have yet to see a really good sci-fi show. Compared to best TV shows in general BSG is quite trashy. Still was entertaining enough for a watch, with some pretty cool moments. Some of the episodes were extremely shitty, namely standalones, like "Black Market". Scenes with Baltar and imaginary/invisible Nr.6 were annoying too, right from the start of the show. And his character in general was a waste, way too stupid for someone who's supposed to be "genius".
Show was definitely a lot like "Lost" in many aspects, that one I half enjoyed, half hated too.

I have only ever watched the last episode. I decided to finally tune in so I could see how Ronald D. Moore was doing after Star Trek....

I don't know. There's no good sci-fi TV show. There's a lot of decent ones. I'm just saying BSG is probably pretty good.

If you look at it critically...

    * B5 has a lot of shitty acting, a horrible fifth season, a kitchy plot
BUT it also has a coherent plot that works towards a goal, it has a plan and it has some great characters (Londo and G'Kar)

    * BSG has a weak ending, some shitty episodes that are clueless filler, some inconsistencies
BUT it also has amazingly good actors (I'm saying this as an amateur actor; they're fucking good from where I am looking at it) and flashes of brilliant writing

    * Firefly has a stupid-ass psi-girl which drags down every episode she is in
BUT it has some good bits that you haven't seen before in other shows and a good premise; shame it ended so soon

    * DS9 has Bajorans and horrible filler episodes and kind of a weak plot
BUT it also has plenty of good ideas and episodes and some strong characters (and plenty awful ones)

We can pick a favorite out of these depending on what we value the most. I value acting the most so I'll pick BSG because it has the most good actors that stay true to their roles and portray emotions in the most fulfilling manner (to me). If you value an original setting then maybe you'd be more inclined to consider Firefly your favorite. If you are an old Star Trek fan, then there's no other choice but DS9. And if you're just looking for something vaguely original and different with a juicy plot and personality then you'll probably pick B5.

Look, they all have problems. The truth is, we're just grasping at straws here, nothing is really amazing. But that's okay. All we can do is watch what we like because honestly, there isn't anything better out there in this genre.

    =/

SG1 was great until Sci-Fi channel bought it. Then it still had some great stuff (ending of season 9 I believe was epic on all counts). Went out with a lame-o episode which sorta copied their episode named "2010", but worse. "2010" was awesome by the way.

Atlantis started off like ass, started improving in season 3, and fizzled out in its prime.

SG: Universe was a horrible show that had so many excellent opportunities for character development and a sense of awe and adventure, and threw them all away like Todd Howard throws away good quest ideas. The best actor on the show was the ship.

One of the best shows evar, fuck the haters :smug: Except for the last seasons (I think 7th or 8th in particular), which were for the most part forced as shit. It was obvious they were seriously out of ideas by that point.

SG: Atlantis I thought was pretty good all around, even though it had black metal fans as main villains. And it never really had a proper ending, too :x

    SG: Universe does not exist.

Of all the newer sci fi tv shows Stargate was the only one a could watch at all. I'm not trying to say it was very good but just not the incredibly horrible pc soap opera fare common to just about every other newer sci fi tv show (and Hollywood movie for that matter).
