I usually save up all those ruins I ignored for patrols myself.

It's pretty random. I finished a 3 star run before - with no encounters.
I did 2 star caravan and got 4 encounters.
I think it's dependent on the route patrols done by the AI.
If there's a lot of army regular patrolling the route, chances are most of the random encounters are already cleared before you pass through.

It's not entirely dependent on route patrols, the higher level contracts frequently spawn enemies on the route as you near but they are still free to flee from the sight of your warband (I am at around 280 days in my run so not uncommon to have a 30 enemy group just plonked down on the road waiting for me). Granted the longer the run the more this might happen (never really been one to take too many long caravan jobs unless they were ending on cities with some combination weaponsmiths/armorers/fletchers) and if you're a somewhat soft looking target of course the random roaming patrols might take a shot like you noted.

can anyone quickly explain me what's the point of the stars?

If you normally get 1-3, 1-4 or 1-5 skills depending on the skill per normal (not "gifted" or veteran levels over 11) level-up, stars guarantee a minimum number above 1 I think. Something like, 2 stars = minimum 3 points.
So if you have someone with melee 50 pts at lvl 1, you get 10 total normal level ups. With no stars you get 10-30 points added if you always take the melee skill upgrade.
With 1 star it's 20-30. 2 30. 3... 40?.

I may have that somewhat wrong, but you get the idea.

Having 2 stars in your primary fighting skill is really useful, with no stars upgrades may often end up being +1's... So even with a good starting skill of 65 or whatnot, you may only end up in the mid 70's.
1 star is maybe ok if starting skill is high enough and you take gifted, or plan on like 10 veteran levels :D

3 stars is obv. best, but you should do the math. If your guy has shit starting skill and 3 stars, he *may* end up worse than someone with high starting skill and 2 stars for example.

The lvlups seem to have changed at some point, I *think* I remember people getting +5 or +4 on normal level ups to melee and defense on "gifted" and maybe even normal level ups in past versions... Maybe I'm misremembering?

so if i understood correctly those values are not fixed/every time same, when char levels?

Well, I'm friend with the hex values in the savegames, and there I see clearly the * bonuses and the bonus points for every ability for every level already rolled and pre-stored in the savegame. It looks like so. If a character has a bonus star pertaining to one of abilities shown in above pic, then the fixed ability bonus values at levelup stored in the save game are usually higher, like if they were rolled like this: if you got ZERO stars you get D2 new points pre-rolled and stored. If you get * star you get D3+1 points, with ** you get D4+1 with three D5 points (D&D), something like that, the stored bonus points for abilities are certainly higher, when my character has ***.

It could be that the stored fixed values for all characters are either random generator "seeds" or root values for rolls. The game throws a 6 dice or 5/4/3 dice based on the number of *-s your mercenary has. Probably.. Only BB's programmer could tell you exactly.

The "fixed" values I talked about seem fixed, because I sometimes test them, and replace some 01 values with 07, 08 or 09 and I remember recently getting a 7 points bonus to one ability, so these values may be fixed.. (?)

One thing is sure: If I overwrite all 'fixed' bonus values with 05, I get 5 bonus points every time I level up for sure. A real HEX-pro can decode these values more clearly.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
My personal "autism" with BB is that I feel like I lost if I lose all 3 of the initial company. It just doesn't feel right any more.

I have 2 of my remaining companions on reserve because they're both horribly maimed. it costs 50 crowns a day but I'm not dismissing them because bros don't leave bros behind.

I wish putting people in reserve decreased their upkeep cost by 25%. that way they'd have a reason to be upset about it, and you could hold more bros in reserve without taking a huge financial hit for it. As it is, the only optimal choice is to have 12 bros on the field and maybe one guy in reserve at the most, since hiring noobs is significantly cheaper than retaining old talent.

Eh cibai, is the mood bugged or something?
I won like 2 fights in a row and it's just content all the time.

Mood tends to decay with time, which means you could win every single battle but your men will still be content if you fight only every two-three days. Unfortunately you need to be very active to keep the Brothers happy.

Wow this game is like old-school hard. Playing at Veteran difficulty.

I was incredibly frustrated until I figured out how to retreat in good order. Now I'm getting into the groove, picking my battles and all that commotion. At least the early game economy is really well balanced; I'm continuously hurting for money yet gradually managing to upgrade my gear anyway. Mostly using loot, but I finally managed to get my backrow fully equipped with military-grade polearms instead of pitchforks. Although I have to say it was fun marching around with those like a mob of angry peasants.

It's amazing how much tactical coolness they manage to do with so little -- basic attack, special attack, use item, that's it. But you have to take into account terrain, elevation, dealing with armour, dealing with shields, enemies that move at different speeds, managing fatigue... this is one hell of an elegant game.

Also, war dogs. Does anyone know if it's possible to upgrade their armour? I just picked one up off the road and he doesn't have any, but of course he's the company mascot so I have to be doubly careful.

Dogs mostly seem useful for chasing down single targets like archers and runners after a battle is over, are there any other good uses?
