Baldur's Gate Modding in 2012? (Are all of the "big" mods awful?)

Has anyone kept up to date on Baldur's Gate 1/2 modding?

I have an ongoing Baldur's Gate Trilogy - the mod that combines BG1 and BG2 into a seamless game - that's almost 2 years now. Yeah, I'm a slow player. According to xfire I have over 120 hours on this game so far and I'm not even close to finishing BG2. The games combined have a fuckton of content, and I'm not even using any of the big addon player-made mods, which I'm now thinking of doing.

Are there any good mods that have come out in the last few years that are worth looking into?

What's the consensus on the "big" content mods? I seem to remember them being in the realm of "total shit" with writing that comes across like fan fiction and incredibly unbalanced items and spells, like absurd +6 swords and BS like that. And one in particular boasts "400 new spells" - right. I don't know why people have an uncontrollable urge to make their quest mods with obscene rewards that are better than anything you'd normally find in the game. And does the game really need 400 new spells? It probably breaks the spell list for one thing.

Are any of them at all (Darkest Day, Dark Side of the Sword Coast, Shadows over Soubar, Check the Bodies) any good? There are more but I can't name them off hand. I doubt they can be installed in the middle of a game, anyway, but for future knowledge it would be nice to know. The idea of playing a massive 400+ hour Baldur's Gate campaign is pretty appealing to me anyway. Probably not so much for others.

Aside from big mods, are there any others that are "must haves"? My current install is probably well out of date (my weidu log says BGT is from Feb 2010) but I'm too scared of trying to update mods and mutilating my install.

Big content mods are shit, try small content mods instead. Some good ones include the Quest Pack, Virtue, and Unfinished Business.

Are you asking solely about mods with new content or also for enhancing gameplay? What mods do you normally install?

Yeah, I mostly meant the "big content" mods. I'm probably 1/2 through BG now and doubt I can add any real mods at this point. I was mostly just wondering the Kodex konsensus on the big content mods and if any of them are worthwhile and not full of unbalanced items and fan fiction writing.

Darkest Day is awful, completely breaks immersion with its lack of balance. Check the bodies - so-so. What else is there considered big - dont remember, mostly sticking to average-sized mods like UB and various NPC mods.

The general consensus is that if anyone is mad enough to sink such a huge time into creating a big mod for a crap game such as BG, it is very unlikely it can be good.

My biggest gripe with replaying BG2/ToB was how easy the game became one you've figured out the exploits. I've heard good things about the Tactics mod challenge-wise, does it make the game worth a replay?

I've never used any of the "big mods" due to excactly the reasons you mention. The authors of those mods always seemed to be most interested in kewl weapons, phat lewt and unbalancing kits. But at least they didn't seem like angst ridden EMOs writing romances.

For BG1 the "must haves" for me are TuTu/BGT, Widescreen Mod, the BG1 NPC Project (very well written for amateurs) and Sword Coast Stratagems.

Definitely chose SCS over Tactics for BG 2. The latter has some good parts (like Torgal the troll) but most of it is a cheese fest de luxe.

Last time I played the Baldur's Gates I was very happy with my mod selection, as they made for a balanced and challenging game, with some new quality content:

If you want to experience what it's like to have a game break your legs, gouge your eyes out with a pitchfork, shit in your mouth and then rape you in the ass with a splintering rod, give Improved Anvil for BG2 a shot. Be advised that it's (to my knowledge) incompatible with most other mods out there, so it's going to be a stand alone experience, though it has tons of content and enough excruciatingly frustrating battles in it to keep you occupied for a while. It's also cheesy as fuck.

Out of the big mods, I found Check The Bodies(bar the tedious part, good thing there is add-on mod for excluding it) and Never Ending Journey(cuz it's just ripped IWD1 until Severed Hand plus some additions) pretty good.

They're still worse then most of little mods for the lack of direction(?).

"Neverending Journey" is insanely hard, à la "Tactics". I hated both. They are all about reloading until you do it the only way you can actually do it. IE's RTwP doesn't mix well with grossly imbalanced fights and only encourages cheesing/exploiting. This is no X-Com or Jagged Alliance. At least, not yet... :(

Also,

First rule of BG Club is that big mods are subpar at best.
Second rule of BG Club is that big mods really are always at best subpar.

Was this part of those Mod-in-a-day competitions the G3 community used to run?

By the way, did I mention that the I.R. is being remade? http://imoen.blindmonkey.org/docs/mod_history.php :mca:
Yes Iron Modder competitions, I think most ran on Forgotten Wars and SimDing0 had just recently created Giberlings 3.
Man has it been so long?
As to I.R. not my cup of tea, but I hear there is Sarelith NPC romance.:incline:

I was quite horrified by the fact that the 'Big World' fanbangfest required 15-20 gigs for download and unpacking

that's a lot of unmitigated bioware community loving

also have you bros noticed how the VA for the Saerileth mod sounds very much like a fat lady struggling not to let any bodily bass into her sentences and ends up plodding everywhere cadence-wise

as one man put it to me "I could practically taste the ham over my speakers"

dost my lord not haveth more cake for thy Saerileth

I was about to try this after a long time of not playing BG2, any recommendations? Everybody says you need to get the new classes or you're fucked up.

How much of Icewind Dale is in the "Neverending Journey" mod? It's been so long since I played IWD that I can't even remember at what point the Severed Hand is. Although it would be impossible to balance properly, I would love a game that combines all of BG1/2 and Icewind Dale 1/2 into one big campaign. The combat is the only real shit thing about the Infinity Engine. It's too bad they won't be touching that for Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition.

So anyway, are there no mods that remove the bullshit from the "big" quest/area mods? Someone suggested "Check the Bodies" so I looked at the website, the first thing I see is "275 New Spells" ... NOPE.

I'm right in the middle of a long BGTrilogy game so I can't install any of these mods anyway I'm sure, but I was wondering about them for a future playthrough. I remember playing Dark Side of the Sword Coast for BG1 back in the day and it was a total clusterfuck with the new unbalancing items.

On this current game the only non-tweak mods I have are Unfinished Business 1 and 2. I was using either SCS or Tactics - I forget which - but I installed it at some point because every single enemy seemed to have potions of extra healing. What the fuck? Not only does it makes it annoying as hell for enemies to heal themselves in every battle, but if you manage to kill them you get their potions. So if you pick them up you end up with stacks and stacks of potions of extra healing.

Are there no tweaks for the "big" quest mods that remove the derp items and spells? Maybe some day I'll just go full derp and install all of them and play a massive 400 hour retard fest with 2000 spells and +8 swords dropping from every enemy and romances with every character.

Not a issue for me, since I did like Tactics and cheesing was part of the fun.:smug:
Also nice to know that droping Sareliths name, can still cause some furor.:D

My experience with "Big World" was: avoid like the plague.

It's just not worth it. You have very little control over what mods get installed; it just goes on the whim of the non-English speaking guy who created it. You can choose which mods to install but you can't choose individual components, so you'll definitely end up with retarded class kits and more. Maybe it's changed in the past few years, but when I installed this game (2 years ago) it was basically just taking a big diarrhea of every BG mod there is and putting it in a blender without letting you pick out the corn pieces first.

If anything just download the manual to Big World and use it as a basis for modding the game manually. I complained about this on their forum and the BWP creator basically laughed and called me a moron for wanting to mod the game myself. It's really not that hard, and I had nothing but bad things to say about BWP.
