My review of Avernum 3. Here's a snippet:

Probably the first thing you'll notice when you fire up Avernum 3 is that it's not the most modern CRPG out there. It doesn't have a lot of automation about it. It doesn't have the latest graphics to push your several hundred dollar graphics card. It doesn't have fast paced, passive combat that you spend most of your time watching. It doesn't make the claim that there are 300+ spells. It, frankly, doesn't have a lot of the hooks that modern CRPGs use to sucker you in to buying them.

That's not a bad thing at all, because what it does offer is a challenging and rewarding experience in the tradition of the older CRPGs. If you're looking for an old school CRPG fix, similar to Ultima, Wasteland, or the old Gold Box games, that's what Avernum 3 offers. It's a straight shooting, party based CRPG that involves a lot of quests, a lot of locations to save, or not save, interesting combat, and more.

Mmmm.. surface-y goodness.

Well this makes two reviews in a row from Saint on Spiderweb titles. I agree wholeheartedly with both. In fact, the only two shareware games I've bought the full version of are Geneforge and Avernum3. If you played RPGs from 1985-1995 and feel like there's something missing from more modern titles give these games a shot. It may take an hour to really get into them but they are solid.

    Hey Aldin,

Actually, I did the NWN review between them. :)

I totally agree with you though, Spiderweb Software is the king of the shareware CRPG from what I've seen. Vogel's had several years of perfecting his work, and while there are some faults, he wins in his ability to make games that suck you in and keep you in.

    Can't wait to play Geneforge 2. :D

I will admit though, I've been playing Prelude to Darkness a lot lately(See the several threads on the General RPG forum here), and despite the bugs, it's a very good CRPG as well.
